HODIE CHRISTUS

NATUS EST - CHRIST IS BORN

TODAY Since scholars debate and

the scriptures remain tight-lipped about the precise day of Jesus’s birth, it might seem odd to proclaim Christ born today every 25th of December. However, I think the word today serves to capture the very real truth that regardless of the precise day, we know that Jesus Christ, Son of God, Son of the Eternal Father, was born in time. We know that Jesus is a real element of human history, and we know that he realizes in himself a mingling of that history with the Divine eternity.

The birth of Jesus, being a real event, carries all the promise and all the challenge of any birth. As parents know, when a child is born it is a moment of joy and hope, but it is also a new force, a new will, a new event in the world over which, ultimately, they have no control. All the parents can do is receive the child. That is all any of us can do, especially when we speak of Jesus.

Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Matthew Crane

The Season of Christmas is upon us. We celebrate Jesus’ coming, past, present and future: his coming as a baby two thousand years ago in Bethlehem, his coming into each of our lives personally, and his return, for which we wait with hope. One reason to love Catholic schools is that they are places to encounter Jesus, past, present and future: they form students in the richness of the Catholic faith and its teachings, they lead students to an encounter with the Lord today through word, sacrament and community, and they witness the hope of salvation and heaven to the world. Sincerely yours, Tom Burnford, National Catholic Education Association President
