Hello! My name is Matt Durkin. I am a seminarian for the Diocese of Phoenix, and I will be in residence at Christ the King until the summer. In the fall, I will be attending the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. I am very glad to be here, and very thankful for the warm welcome that I have received so far.

At this point, I just wanted to briefly introduce myself. I was born and raised in Southern, Maryland. Both of my parents still live in Maryland, and my younger sister now lives in Virginia. I was baptized in the Byzantine Catholic Rite, but, since I was raised as a Roman Catholic, I am discerning the priesthood in the

Roman Rite. Prior to being a seminarian, I was a military lawyer. I attended Loyola College in Maryland and Villanova Law School.

After graduating from law school in 2009, I was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force . I served on active duty for over four and half years, and, among other things, was both a prosecutor and defense attorney. Upon completion of my active duty service commitment, I honorably separated in the fall of 2014 as a Captain. During my military career, I was stationed at Minot AFB, North Dakota and Luke AFB, Arizona. I also deployed to Afghanistan for several months in 2013.

Although I was very happy with the course of my life, I also felt that there was something missing. For about the past 10 years, I’ve had some feeling that the Lord may be calling me to the priesthood. To be honest, for a long time, I tried to push it away! Despite my best attempts to do so, however, I couldn’t shake the thought that the Lord was asking me to explore the possibility of the priesthood. Eventually, I reached out to Fr. Paul Sullivan, the Vocation Director for the Diocese of Phoenix. As the end of my active duty service commitment with the military drew near, I had to make some very difficult decisions…stay in the military, return to civilian life as a layman, or return to civilian life and apply to the seminary. After a long period of prayerful reflection, I felt that I needed to more deeply discern the Lord’s potential call to the priesthood. As a result, I applied to and was accepted as a seminarian. Before entering the seminary proper, I was fortunate enough to be offered an opportunity to participate in a pastoral assignment. That is how I arrived at Christ the King.

As I begin to enter more deeply into the discernment process, I put my trust in the Lord that He will guide me in the right direction. As I begin my time at Christ the King, I would ask you to please keep me in your prayers. Please know that I will be praying for all of you as well.

Thank you again, and may God bless you!

Matthew D. Durkin

Questions on Lenten Fasting and Abstinence? We have answers!

Q. I understand that all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat, but I'm not sure what is classified as meat. Does meat include chicken and dairy products? A. Abstinence laws consider that meat comes only from animals such as chickens, cows, sheep or pigs --- all of which live on land. Birds are also considered meat. Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, consommé, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made from animal fat are technically not forbidden. However, moral theologians have traditionally taught that we should abstain from all animal-derived products (except foods such as gelatin, butter, cheese and eggs, which do not have any meat taste). Fish are a different category of animal. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are permitted.

Q. I understand that Catholics ages 18 to 59 should fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, but what exactly are the rules for these fasts? A. Fasting on these days means we can have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular meal times if necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids are allowed at any time, but no solid food should be consumed between meals.

Q. Are there exemptions other than for age from the requirement to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday? A. Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not jeopardize their health by fasting.

Shawl Ministry Yarn Donations

The Prayer Shawl Ministry needs yarn donations (non-wool). 4 skeins (bundles) or one pound of yarn will make one shawl. Yarn donations can be in any color. Your thoughtful

donations will allow the ladies who faithfully dedicate their time each week to continue to knit and crochet the beautiful prayer shawls. Yarn donations can be dropped off in the Parish Office or the Shrine.

Facilitator of Marriage Ministry Job Opening

Annulments. ∗ Recruits, trains, and evaluates volunteer teams in the

diverse responsibilities needed for the ministry. ∗ Prepares, implements and maintains an annual

budget for Marriage Ministry.

Qualifications: ∗ 1 year minimum experience in Marriage Ministry. ∗ A bachelor’s degree or the equivalent, or additional

years experience in ministry. ∗ Fluency in the English and Spanish languages, both

The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I be-

lieve in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all

things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered

death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds

from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of

sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

I see the King of Glory, coming on the clouds with fire, The whole earth shakes, the whole earth shakes. I see His love and mercy, washing over all our sin The people sing, the people sing Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna in the highest! . I see a generation, rising up to take their place With selfless faith, with selfless faith I see a near revival, stirring as we pray and seek We’re on our knees, we’re on our knees Heal my heart and make it clean, Open up my eyes to the things unseen. Show me how to love like You have loved me. Break my heart for what breaks Yours. Everything I am for Your kingdom’s cause, as I walk from earth into eternity

Sacred silence, holy ocean, gentle water, washing over me;

Help me listen, Holy Spirit. Come and speak to me.

God my Father, Christ my brother, Holy Spirit, sanctifying me; Lord I’m sorry, please forgive me. Come and set me free.

Holy Mary, gentle mother, God’s pure vessel, praying for me;

Saints and angels, all in heaven, come and be with me.

Blessed be Your name in the land that is plentiful, Where Your streams of abundance flow, blessed be Your name. Blessed be Your name when I’m found in the desert place, Tho’ I walk through the wilderness, blessed be Your name. Every blessing You pour out I’ll turn back to praise. When the darkness closes in, Lord, still I will say: “Blessed be the name of the Lord! Blessed be Your name! Blessed be the name of the Lord! Blessed be Your glorious name!” Blessed be Your name when the sun’s shining down on me, When the world’s all as it should be, blessed be Your name. Blessed be Your name on the road marked with suffering, Tho’ there’s pain in the offering, blessed be Your name. You give and take away, You give and take away, My heart will choose to say, “Lord, blessed be Your name!”

Page 11: CHRIST THE KING CATHOLIC CHURCHctk-catholic.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/169250... · 2015-02-13 · Hello! My name is Matt Durkin. I am a seminarian for the Diocese of Phoenix,

¡Hola!

Matthew D. Durkin
