What is the Mass? The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass

(A series...Part 3) Fr. Terry Walsh

Do you believe in Angels? Do you believe that one is sitting beside you at this very moment? Your Guardian Angel was sent by God to watch over you, so much does God love you! Yes, angels are real beings created by God and are constantly looking upon the Face of God while at the same time looking upon us. The gift of Faith allows us to contemplate those heavenly realities revealed to us by God. As we ponder these supernatural realities through our prayer, understanding grows. Now, the highest form of prayer is the Mass where we come to offer our thanks and praise to God. As we contemplate the mysteries of our faith from the simple sign of the Cross to the awesome reception of Holy Communion, the richness of our faith, filled with such majestic beauty and inspiring mystery, grows stronger in our hearts. We’re able then to begin to perceive what awaits us in heaven – if only we humble ourselves and ‘become like little children’ as our Lord teaches us in the Gospel. It is the only way to see God. Only then, it seems to me, will we begin to perceive the “language of the angels” and be more open to receiving the rich graces He pours upon us at Mass. Jesus invites us and then He waits for our reply. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if any one hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20). If the door to our heart remains tightly closed we might pry it open with prayer and soften its hinges with the graces of the sacraments, especially Confession. It’s like wiping fog away from a window. Each faithful encounter makes it a bit easier to grasp the mystery and so enter the portal of the Mass: Heaven on earth! “In the earthly liturgy we share in a foretaste of that heavenly liturgy which is celebrated in the Holy City of Jerusalem toward which we journey as pilgrims, where Christ is sitting at the right hand of God, Minister of the sanctuary and of the true tabernacle. With all the warriors of the heavenly army we sing a hymn of glory to the Lord; venerating the memory of the saints, we hope for some part and fellowship with them; we eagerly await the Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ, until he, our life, shall appear and we too will appear with him in glory” (Catechism, #1090). Faithful preparation is the key to that Door. Is the door of your heart open or shut? We are not entering the Church to watch the Mass; rather, we have come to be actively engaged. Our interior joy at each Mass should resemble a child’s joy on Christmas morning. Ask our Lady to help you. After all, She is truly your Mother and it is Her great desire that you know and love Her Son! Do you eagerly anticipate the mysterious encounter with God in Mass? As you walk through the door, stretching your fingers into the Holy water to bless yourself, perhaps you recall the fact that you are already in Christ by virtue of your baptism. Genuflecting before the Tabernacle with wonder and respect, you take your place in the pew and begin your prayer – your interior conversation with God. What thoughts come to mind as the Priest raises his hand to make the Sign of the Cross: “In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit!” We need only raise our spiritual eyes to Calvary to recall the love that made it possible for us to address God as Father. St. Paul wrote: “Jesus humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross” (Philippians 2: 8). Perhaps our mind’s eye might gaze upon the Roman soldier standing beneath the Cross, spear in hand, being washed in the blood gushing from the wound he inflicted. In the Mass, we actually enter into the “re-presentation” of the actual Crucifixion of Jesus in a mysterious, “unbloody” way. While it took place in time 2000 years ago, in truth, it is ever-present, infinitely efficacious. Our Lord makes it easy for us. We don’t see his disfigured body. Instead, he comes to us in utter simplicity through ordinary bread and wine. All of Heaven has come to adore Him and we are joining the whole celestial company in the Mass. Ah, if we could only see with our natural eyes what the eyes of faith declare: all the Angels and Saints surround us in the Holy Mass, mysteriously present to worship God in a chorus of love. In this one powerful moment, we acknowledge our hope of eternal beatitude with this simple, yet profound gesture that is in fact a declaration of faith: the Sign of the Cross. Reflecting on the power of the Cross, St. Leo the Great remarked: “The sign of the cross makes kings of all those reborn in Christ and the anointing of the Holy Spirit consecrates them as priests, so that, apart from the particular service of one ministry, all spiritual and rational Christians are recognized as members of this royal race and sharers in Christ’s priestly office. What, indeed, is as royal for a soul as to govern the body in obedience to God? And what is as priestly as to dedicate a pure conscience to the Lord and to offer the spotless offerings of devotion on the altar of the heart?”(Sermo 4, 1: PL 54, 149; Catechism 786). We are in the Presence of God, and the priest declares: “The Lord be with you!” Naturally, we yearn to enter the “wedding feast” in the “New Jerusalem” - that is, Heaven. Ultimately, we have to decide to open the door when He knocks. That decision begins by preparing our spiritual house to be worthy to receive him. In other words, we have to examine our conscience and allow him to clean it through his gift of grace. We know that nothing impure may enter Heaven and so we work to keep our “wedding garment” – that is, our soul, unsullied. Even venial sins must be swept away. The Penitential Rite in Mass enables us to call to mind those smaller infractions when we have failed to live up to our true calling as ‘children of God.’ “Lord, have mercy!” and he wipes our venial sins away, enabling us to approach the altar properly disposed to receive Him. Of course, if we were guilty of some grave sin (mortal sins), we have locked the door: He will not enter until we have brought the matter before him so he may absolve the truly repentant person through the Sacrament of Confession. The simple penitential rite at the beginning of Mass does NOT absolve us from mortal certainly encourages us to bring even the lesser (venial) sins to the sacrament of Confession in order to receive the

benefit of sacramental grace. Recall the stern warning issued by St. Paul: “Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself”(1Corinthians 11: 27-29). Simple respect for the gift of the Eucharist compels us to be properly prepared. Once we have prepared our spiritual house, we’re ready to let him enter. Naturally, our hearts are filled with joy as we contemplate the Banquet of life. We’re about to be filled with the spiritual food that transfigures our soul into a true likeness of Christ Himself, all for the glory of our Father in Heaven. This astounding joy bursts through voices raised in the Gloria! What thoughts run through your mind as you sing this great anthem with the angels? Perhaps you reflect on the many times our Lord has rushed to your aid and supplied graces to meet your every spiritual need. Or, maybe your thoughts drift back to that Holy night when news of Salvation burst forth upon the world for the first time to the poor shepherds: “The angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were struck with great fear”(Luke 2:9). Imagine that very first Gloria! God left His throne of glory to be born in utter humility in a cold and dark cave – for us. We enter into that beautiful angelic chorus of praise when we sing the Gloria. If our hearts are fully engaged, our spiritual vision draws us into that ‘cold winter’s night’ and in a sense we hear the angels: “Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people…a Savior has been born for you…And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying: Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests” (Luke 2: 10-14). God calls mankind to holiness from the very moment of Creation: “Be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy” (Leviticus 19:2). We become holy through the gift of faith and our abiding love. It’s in the Mass most especially that we are sanctified. Upon hearing the news of salvation, the shepherds ran to greet the Newborn King. Do we run to Mass? He comes knocking every single day in the Holy Mass. Ah, if only we would prepare well and ask for the graces necessary to “see”; that is, to allow heaven to pierce our hearts. We would sing with fervor rather than allow our minds to drift away to the land of distraction. “Let us pray!” the priest declares. We have called to mind our baptismal promises through the sign of the Cross and we have prepared our spiritual house to receive our guest worthily. We have sung his praises in the Gloria and now we turn to the Father and offer our “Collective” prayer (The Opening Prayer) to Him - the very same prayer uttered throughout the entire world, for we are indeed, One Body. Next week, part 4.
