We will seek God’s will, share God’s love, and serve as Christ’s people.

Christ Lutheran News May, 2019

A Mother’s Love

A Mother’s love is something That no one can explain,

It is made of deep devotion And of sacrifice and pain, It is endless and unselfish

And enduring come what may For nothing can destroy it Or take that love away . . . It is patient and forgiving

When all others are forsaking, And it never fails or falters

Even though the heart is breaking . . . It believes beyond believing

When the world around condemns, And it glows with all the beauty Of the rarest, brightest gems . . .

It is far beyond defining, It defies all explanation,

And it still remains a secret Like the mysteries of creation . . .

A many splendored miracle Man cannot understand

And another wondrous evidence Of God’s tender guiding hand.

Welcome one another, therefore, just as Christ has

welcomed you, for the glory of God. (Romans 15:7)

This past year I had the opportunity to celebrate my 50th high

school reunion in Sleepy Eye, while I was serving as an in-

terim at Trinity Lutheran, my home congregation. It was fun

to greet and to see class members, some who I hadn’t talked

with since graduation.

I invited all to Trinity’s worship service on Sunday, but the

local members of the class had their own congregation to at-

tend, others had already made plans for the day, but about half

on my confirmation class and one other accepted the invita-

tion. Long story short, one comment from the group was,

“What a welcoming congregation, how do you do that?”

Of course, it wasn’t anything that I had done that made the con-

gregation welcoming, that was already in place. It got me think-

ing however about the importance of “welcome”. The “welcome”

that people experience in congregation needs to be already in

place for the “stranger/guest” to experience it. It needs to be a pri-

ority. It must almost be second nature to each member of the con-

gregation. It cannot be just friendly or welcoming to the peo-

ple we already know.

Now if I asked people at random “Is Christ Lutheran a friendly

congregation?” What would the answer be? My guess is that

Christ Lutheran members are friendly with people they know but

not so much with guests or people they don’t know. I have wit-

nessed on numerous occasions guest/strangers being ignored, not

being engaged in conversation or invited to coffee after the ser-

vices. And I must ask, “Would I really want to be a part of such a

congregation?” Would you? Probably not.

The scriptures speak a great deal about welcoming others: wel-

coming the resident alien, welcoming the poor, the lonely, the

disposed and the oppressed for the sake of the welcome that we

all have received in Christ. Can we do any less?

The Interim Process

The work of the Call Committee has been fruitful. A name has been

surfaced and by the time that you will be reading this, it is possible

that it will be presented to a congregational vote. This however is

not the end of the transition process for Christ Lutheran Church.

The congregation and its members will be embarking on a new jour-

ney with a new pastoral leader. For many this is good news, for

some this journey will be difficult and upsetting. I have some con-

cerns about this transitional journey for the congregation. I have no-

ticed that a resistance to doing things differently. I can understand

some of that as an interim, “Why change anything for the interim

when we’ll just have to change it again for the real pastor.” I get

that and I’m okay with it. I went in as a “bulldozer” once and it was-

n’t a pleasant experience for anyone.

I sense however that resistance to change goes much deeper than

that at Christ Lutheran. I see groups and people doing the same

things over and over again, all the while expecting different results.

This is one of the reasons for short pastorates, the inability to accept

and process change.

As an intentional interim, this is one of the realities we see over and

over again, the desire for change and the inability to actually change.

Why? Because: change is difficult, change is a bit scary, change is a

bit humiliating if the change fails or goes sideways, change is con-

troversial because it will meet resistances. Yet unless such things are

not met head on and processed nothing new with ever happen, no

progress will ever take place.

There is a way forward:

1. Open and honest conversation about need and mission.

2. The management of one’s own anxiety.

3. Planning, planning, planning, planning.

4. Working the plan.

5. Evaluation in the context of need and mission.

6. Celebrating and Thanking those involved.

7. Repeat.

Sharing Our Time & Talents

We are already into the 2nd

quarter of 2019! Our schedules are filled with work, family and school activities. Also very important is our church family. As members of the Worship and Evangelism Committee meet to complete the list of helpers each month for the year, we find that we are using many of the same people to do the works of the church. It is our hope that this year will be different and that we will have some more people sign up to help with our church services. It takes many volunteers to have our services go smoothly. We know we have many capable and talented people in our congregation who are able to lend a hand during our wor-ship services. We ask that you prayerfully consider signing up to participate in one or more of the listed duties. It is a great way to meet others of our congregation and be in-volved in the workings of the church. Our committee mem-bers are available to train or explain the workings of each duty. A Time & Talent Survey is available in the church narthex during services and online on the church website showing the positions where people are needed to help to ensure that our worship services run smoothly. We ask that all members fill out the Time & Talent List. Please include your current phone numbers. Thank you for your consideration to participate. Feel free to contact any-one on our committee with your questions. May God bless you for sharing your time and talents, The Worship & Evangelism Committee:

Randi Stoel, Tim Lange, Sue Isder, Joan Kluis, Ann Muecke, Irene Moline

A Memorial Day Prayer Memorial Day was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed at the graves of Union and Confeder-ate soldiers. On this day we honor all who have died in ser-vice of our nation. Dear God our Father,

Your word tells us, "Unless the LORD build the house, they labor in vain who build. Unless the LORD guard the city, in vain does the guard keep watch" (Psalm 127:1).

Thank You for those who have guarded not only our cities, but our country, allies, and many other communities from unjust and unprincipled aggressors. On this Memorial Day, with a solemn and sacred spirit, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women in our Armed Forces who gave up their lives for their fellow Americans at home and abroad. Many were young and many were married, with their loved ones praying for them back home; but they were each fighting to protect the freedom we enjoy when they were called to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Dear God, please bless our he-roes and heroines with Your mercy, grace, and peace. Bless also their families and friends. May Your perpetual light shine upon them; and may their souls and the souls of all our faithful departed rest in peace. In Jesus' name.

Amen.

Camperships Available

Again this year, the Endowment & Fellowship & Service Committees will be offering Camperships for Christ Lu-theran members that attend Shetek Lutheran Ministries. Camperships are $200 for weeklong or specialty camps and $50 for mini-camps. Forms are on the church website under Youth/Bible Camp or on the Shetek Lutheran Minis-tries bulletin board at church across from the Chapel Lounge.

Is this your child’s first time to summer camp? The Me-morial Committee has scholarships available for first time campers from Christ Lutheran who attend a program at Shetek Lutheran Ministries. These scholarships are in addi-tion to the scholarships given by the Endowment and Fel-lowship and Service Committees. For a first time camper to attend a week of camp, the Memorial Committee will pro-vide an additional $100 scholarship and for a mini-week at camp, an additional $40 scholarship. These scholarships are provided by the Grieme family in memory of Shar and we are grateful for their gift.

Radio Broadcast Ministry

May 5, 26 and June 2 are still available. Checks ($65) can be made out to Christ Lutheran with “Radio Broadcast” in the memo or you can pay online by visiting our website.
