Pastor’s Reflection

Genesis 8:1-9, Romans 6:1-11

“By the first day of the first month of Noah’s six hundred and first year, the water had dried up from the earth.

Noah then removed the covering from the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry. By the second

month the earth was completely dry.” Genesis 8:13-14

Stephen Covey’s bestselling guide to success, “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” suggests that one of the

seven secrets to success is to always begin with the end in mind. Sounds like good advice. Design well before

you build. Know your desired outcomes before you begin to plan. Yes, it makes sense.

“In the beginning God created…” These very first words of Scripture found in the Book of Genesis suggests a

beginning that was pregnant with potential. One has to wonder what end God had in mind in those first moments

when God exhaled the breath of life into the abyss.

Whatever God’s vision might have been, by chapter 6, we learn that something had gone terribly wrong and by 8,

the creator of all threw His hands up in disgust and was determined to wipe the slate clean. With world

happenings in our day, I imagine if it were not for the promise of Easter, we’d be plumb out of hope.

It seems humanity is still stubbornly stuck on learning the hard way, doesn’t it? Gratefully, the story does not

end there! There is Good News!

Even as the tears of God’s grief scoured the fouled earth clean way back then, the depth of God’s great love was

(and is) already in motion to bring life out of death as “By the second month the earth was completely dry….”

Covey might suggest that there was a flaw in God’s plan. Oh, but if you turn to Romans 6:1-11, you will quickly

discover God has all contingencies covered! Thanks be to God!

Over the past several years, our world has endured much suffering. Ecological devastation at the hand of human

greed, earthquake, storms, and global warming, wars, economic crisis, and poverty, threaten creation itself. The

Middle East is once again torn by violence. It’s enough to make

God’s heart grieve. Fortunately, the story does not end there

either!

As the Evangelical Lutheran celebrates 25 years of ministry and

Family of Christ is well into its 41st, we remain called, gathered,

and sent to be the change agents of these tender times in this place. We get to participate in God’s plan to bless our world. We get to join Jesus in sowing the seeds of a new creation!

Beginning with the end in mind, we must ask ourselves, “What

do we believe the Family of Christ should be about in these

tender times? What should it look like, and how do we get

there?” As we move deeper into our Vision Process toward long

term planning, let the Holy Spirit stir our hearts and author our

dreams.

Blessings,

Pastor Kit

Trunk or

Treat!

Family of Christ will be holding our second annual Trunk or Treat on October 30 in the parking lot from 6:00pm to 7:00pm! Last year, we had a great turn out and we’re looking forward to doing it again, however, this year it will be held on Wednesday, October 30 on our Family Night so that we can also enjoy dinner!

What is a Trunk or Treat? It's when several families get together at the church building, park their cars in the parking lot, open up their trunks or the back of their vehicles, and hand out candies to the kids as they come around to each car to Trunk-or-Treat!

It’s a great outreach opportunity and a safe and fun alternative for families to trick or treating door to door. It’s also fun to see how the trunks or the back of the vehicles are decorated!! Last year, we had some pretty cool looking trunks, so let’s get creative and see what can come up with this year! Decorations should be done in a fun and non-scary way. You can even dress up in your non-scary costume!

Last year, our Little Christian leaders, Jamie Leatherwood and Tiffany Alexander, set up a simple and fun Halloween carnival for the kids and they’re planning on doing it again this year!

If you would like to participate or help with the Halloween carnival, there will be a sign up sheet with more information in the Family Room. If you have any questions, get in touch with Cheri Herzog or Kim Koon.

For those who are participating, we’ll vote on who we think has the best ‘trunk’ design and the winner will receive a prize! ☺

Let’s have some fun with this!

Opportunities

turkeys and gifts for the Angel Tree. The

shopping list for Christmas food boxes is

posted by the donation box in the Family

The choir is in rehearsal, the bells are

ringing, and our Sunday School children will

be singing regularly in worship. Bible

studies are meeting. Planning is underway

for our children’s Christmas program on

That’s just the tip of the iceberg! It takes

everyone being connected and involved to

there’s no time like the present! Get

involved. You will be blessed!

Christian Education

Sunday School is off to a terrific start and there is a place for everyone! We offer classes from preschool to adult Bible studies. There are also opportunities to help teach and if you are interested in being on our fantastic teaching team, let Cheri Herzog know!

We will continue to use Spark as our curriculum for grades preschool-Kindergarten. Teachers and past students have raved about this format and so we will continue with this again. We’ll be using the Lectionary format which will follow the text and lessons we hear during worship each week. Spark is a faith

formation program that is designed to get the kids excited about God’s Word. It brings to life several stories from the Old and New Testaments through a variety of age-appropriate activities all designed to accommodate the different ways children learn!

New this year, is our ‘Tween class, for the 5th and 6th graders. The curriculum they are using is called Connect. Each week, this class will focus and reinforce a theme by watching a witty video,

exploring biblical text, and creating projects that range from games to art and more! Connect grows with preteens, helping them make sense of the Bible and encouraging them to ask questions, make connections, and reflect. We are excited to try this out and look forward to some promising results!

Confirmation, for grades 7th and 8th, will continue to be taught on Sunday mornings with Pam Ausman leading and on Wednesday evenings with Pastor Kit leading. We will continue to use the Here We Stand curriculum. Here We Stand is made up of three units with 30 lessons each; Small Catechism, Old Testaments, and New Testaments.

We are blessed to have Cecilia Shepherd and Tim Nelson leading our high school class this year! This

class will look at the history of the Christian experience and learn about the ancient Greek language and what life was like during the time Jesus was alive. Some discussions about Martin Luther and historical events surrounding and influencing his life will also be a topic. This class is sure to bring a unique perspective to our learning environment!

Sunday morning adult Bible classes are held in the library with Pastor Kit leading. Topics include an in-depth Bible Study, Christian theology, church history, and contemporary issues facing people of faith today.

Christian Education hour is from 9:45am to 10:45am. Come and check us out….you won’t be disappointed!!

Our kick off to Sunday School on September 15 was enjoyed by everyone who was there! We gathered in the Sanctuary for a welcome back opening and then headed to the Family Room where several fleece blankets were ready to be tied together to complete a blanket which will be given to the Clark County Sheriff’s Department. The funds for the blankets were from our Sunday School offerings! We were able to give out 20 blankets and several small stuffed toy animals that were collected! We had so much fun making up the fleece blankets that there is some discussion about perhaps making this an ongoing ministry! Our thanks to Carol Collell and JoAnn Munson for cutting the fleece and to Cecelia Shepard for the idea to work with the sheriff’s department. An ice cream social was also enjoyed by everyone. We’re looking forward to another wonderful year of learning and forming new friendships!

Preschool News

September

September has started out in full swing for us here at Family of Christ Christian Preschool. We have a total of 107 children ages 2-5 enrolled.

We have hosted our annual Ice Cream Socials, held numerous classroom visits, spent an evening with our preschool parents for orientation, and finally the big day arrived! The first day of classes for the 2013-2014 school year started on September 9 and 10. And what a great day it was!

Our annual “Meet Your Classmates Spaghetti Dinners” were held on Thursday, September 26 and Friday, September 27. This was a fun time for the families to get to break bread with one another and be able to put names to faces of the children they see coming and going from school.

Curriculum Enrichment ~ Our parents were all very excited to hear more about the Miss Keri’s Spanish program that we are introducing this fall to all of our classes starting in October.

Friends of the Preschool ~ We are excited to have Judy Enders and Gail Sieckman join us downstairs for sharing stories and engaging in conversations with the preschoolers this year. If you are interested in becoming a “Friend of the Preschool”, please let me know. I am hoping to get our new friends visiting in October…

October Events That you don’t want to miss…

New Ministries at Family

New Congregational Life Ministries Coordinator

Blessings Family of Christ! My name is Susan Dollinger. I am so excited to be a part of this amazing church as the Congregational Life Ministries Coordinator. I am originally from Bellevue, Washington and my husband and I attended Washington State University where we met in the marching band. My husband, Patrick Murphy, my three children, Belle, Jayden, and Shaylin, and I moved to the Felida community about three years ago.

I have a B.A. in Business Administration, a B.S. in Psychology, and I have Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration. I have worked in higher education as an academic advisor and ran a residence hall that focused on leadership programming. Most recently I was fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom. I have spent a lot of time with a group called MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) where I worked with the moms of the children, providing programming, that included speakers and crafts. I have also been a public speaker for this group on various subjects. While my experience with youth and young moms has been my background, I feel privileged to be able to work in a ministry that will involve getting to know all the faces that make up a congregation. I enjoy painting, reading, speaking, Bible studies, learning, and being with my family. Currently, I have gone through the candidacy process through ELCA in hopes to someday become a pastor. I am very excited to work in this new ministry at Family of Christ. I am grateful to be here and look forward to meeting you.

New Ministry Team Forming!

The FOC Senior Council will plan events, outings, and activities for our active retired members.

We’ll be looking at luncheons with speakers, field trips far and near, fun activities, and service opportunities.

Vision Planning

Vision ...

Dream ...

Future ...

So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

2 Corinthians 5: 17

We’re working hard and fast to compile all the data from our vision meetings and surveys. What we are seeing is cause for joy, presents a challenge or two—in a good way, and confirms much of what we already know to be true at Family. We are a loving congregation where all are truly welcome, where worship is central, and our commitment to service is strong. Concern for our hungry and homeless neighbors is central to our mission. We are also a congregation that enjoys being together. Community, fellowship, and mutual support are key to our life together. We are proud of our preschool ministry and look to how we might build upon it. We are committed to caring for all generations and see building generational bridges as an important part of the health of our congregation and its future. There is a lot to be excited about.

What’s Next? Our Vision Taskforce is in the process of looking at the information we’ve collected to identify the “core values” that stand behind our priorities. These values will be crafted into a strong Vision Statement that accurately reflects who we are as Family of Christ today. This document, once affirmed by the congregation at our Annual Meeting in January, will guide our ministry in the present and as we begin working on a 3-5 year strategic mission plan. We hope to have that work completed in time for our mid-year congregation meeting in June.

These are exciting times! Thank you for your faithfulness to our shared ministry and life together! Every voice is important, so if you have additional thoughts to share, please email them to our Vision Team Chair, Kristy Cameron at [email protected].

From the ELCA - U.S. Flooding in Colorado

The Situation:

After record-breaking September rains, flood waters are raging in

Colorado’s front range. These floods have consumed parts of Colorado;

damaging or destroying over 18,000 homes and businesses. Three ELCA

church buildings have also been affected. Some areas continue to

experience mudslides, damaged roads, and downed power lines. Your

help is needed to make a difference in the affected area.

Our Response:

We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. Through

congregations, pastors, and Lutheran-affiliated social ministries, we are

REUTERS / Mark Leffingwell

working together to help serve those most affected. Lutheran Disaster Response is at work, assessing the immediate and long-term

needs of those affected by the floods. Throughout the United States we are working hand-in-hand with ELCA synods and other

ministry organizations that are experts at outreach in their communities. We know it will be a long road to recovery, and your gifts are

needed to begin coordinating relief efforts.

What you can do:

Pray:

As the communities work to recover, please keep them and those who work on their behalf in prayer.

Give:

You can donate to Lutheran Disaster Response by making a check out to Family of Christ with “Disaster Response-Colorado

Flooding” in the memo line. One check will be sent from the congregation. Or you can donate directly online by visiting the ELCA

Pack 494 Popcorn Sales! Family of Christ has been a Charter Organization for Cub Scout Pack 494 for over 30 years! We would like to help support this Pack as much as we can to help them with funding and great

leadership! They will be selling the Scout’s famous “Trails End” popcorn. If you would like to place an order, there will be an order form on the table in the Family Room, or you can get in touch with Cheri Herzog, as she is our Charter Representative for both Pack 494 and Troop 479. The popcorn sale runs through October 27. All profits go directly into each individual Cub Scout’s camping funds, as well as it helps to support our Pack!

With Appreciation

Thank you for all the school supplies for kids at Open House Ministry. This saves their teachers a lot of

money from their own pockets.

Thank you to Martins for another great spaghetti casserole for the Sunday night street dinner and for the

food left from the Volunteer Appreciation luncheon and Wednesday night dinner from the Lowerys.

Thank you to the crew from Xtra Touch Carpet Care who did an excellent job of cleaning the sanctuary,

nursery, choir room, offices, hallways, library, and the classrooms!

Thank you to everyone who donated to the rebuilding of Moore, Oklahoma after tornados hit last May. We

sent $1,337.17 to the ELCA Disaster Relief Fund.

Thank you for supporting the Million Meals ministry. September’s offering of $873 allows us to donate

10,913 pounds of food to local agencies through the Clark County Food Bank. Our mission partner for October

is our own Million Meals program. The next in-gathering is on Sunday, October 13.
