Christ Lutheran Church, Filey’s

Greetings!

Thinking about the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation, I wondered what the next 500 years will bring as far as changes to the church. As a congregation we are considering what our role is in the community. We began delving into the book “Autopsy of a Deceased Church” and how it might apply to us. We’ve thought about ways in which to enliven our ministry in this place. All topics that many other congregations in our area have started thinking about. The Holy Spirit is moving in this place – urging us to go deeper into our faith and to consider who we are and what we, as a congregation, are here for. As I was doing some research on our guest speak-er for this year’s synod assembly, I came across this article that he wrote. His name is Dr. Rev. Dave Daubert, and he is the principal manager of Day 8 Strategies, a group committed to renewing mainline, progressive and socially conscious churches. Finding his article from “Living Lutheran” to be timely to our search for ways in which we can think about being church, I thought it was a good idea to include it in our newsletter.

“Nice is not enough - Taking the pulse of your congregation's Christ-centeredness”, By David Daubert, June 24, 2015, https://www.livinglutheran.org/2015/06/nice-not-enough/

Across the ELCA, congregations are wondering how to better connect with people and find re-newal and avenues to growth. But when asked, “What is the best thing about this place that you’d want new people to know?” members in almost every congregation say the same thing: “The people. These people are really nice peo-ple.” With a significant majority of our congregations having weekly worship attendance of well under 100 people (and declining), this sentiment is un-derstandable. In many of our settings, most of the people know most of the other people. It can easily feel like a family.

Dave Drumm We are a church grounded in the gospel of a God who has come into the world in the person of Jesus Christ. This God has lived, suffered and died with a costly love. That same God has been raised from the dead and re-turns with a persistent love. We are joined to Christ with a baptism that offers an abiding presence and promises we will never be apart from the God we meet in Jesus.

But when we’re asked the best thing about what it means to be part of our ministry, sadly the answer too often begins “We are .…”

There are two reasons why this is causing us trouble. First, it isn’t true. Whenever we descend to being a so-cial club, no matter how religious the veneer, we have ceased to live out of our identity as the church. The fo-cus of life, especially as Luther- ans understand it, is that God always goes first and initi-ates with love that creates, redeems and gives new life. While we might respond with faith and life or with sin and death, the God of Jesus persists in the direc-tion of life anyway. If the first thing we say about our church life isn’t God, we are already in the doghouse. Whenever we have become the point, however uninten-tionally, we have big issues to deal with.

(Pastor’s letter cont’d) Second, in our overloaded and busy lives, most peo-ple aren’t looking to spend more time with nice peo-ple anyway. Many people are inundated with rela-tionships from work, caring for aging parents, their kids’ activities and other demands on their lives. If that isn’t enough, many have hundreds of friends on social media — often including dozens they have-n’t really met yet, and probably never will, or don’t remember “friending” in the first place. Depending on social skills and abilities, online “friends” may be less problematic than actual face-to-face time with a living person whose body is pre-sent and eyes are actually looking at you. The last thing many people are looking for is the chance to not sleep in on Sundays in order to have a few more nice people in their lives.

Dave Drumm So what’s the point? If nice isn’t enough, or even the point, then what is? Recent indicators from multiple sources point to the fact that people are less interested in church life than in previous eras, but their interest in their spir-itual lives (God, meaning, purpose, etc.) remains quite high. It isn’t that people have stopped believing that God

might exist or that life might have meaning. Rather, because so many churches are filled with people be-ing “nice” but who seem to not be all that interested in God when they get together, people have stopped looking to the church as a place to search for spiritu-al meaning. While many in our society are “spiritual but not reli-gious,” they perceive that people in the church are “religious but not spiritual.” When someone who hasn’t participated in church life comes into a congregation, they usually are not looking to see if the people there would make good friends. Their underlying question isn’t “Are the peo-ple here nice?” but rather “Is God clearly a part of this place?” If the answer they perceive is “yes,” they then ask the next question: “Do the people seem to notice God’s presence here?” Visitors want to know if this is a place where people have a vibrant and growing faith life. If so, they find hope that they, too, might find a vibrant and grow-ing faith. Once the God questions and the vibrant faith ques-tions are answered, then people ask: “Are these people I would want to hang around with?” Here, being nice is helpful. People want to journey with people who know God and are growing in faith, but who are also caring and loving in authentic ways. Relationships do mat-ter. But nice is the third thing on the list — not the first. In the end, it’s fine to be nice. But nice is not enough.

Here is an exercise for you…write down the one thing you appreciate most about your congregation – then turn to page 11 for follow up.

Reformation Cornerstones Every October, many Protestants celebrate the work of reformers who brought about much-needed change in the Christian church. At the center of their contributions were four teachings:

• Scripture alone: The supremacy of the Bible as the surest guide for faith and life. • Grace alone: The supremacy of God’s undeserved love. God counts us “right” with him when we accept his free gifts of forgiveness and salvation.

• Faith alone: The supremacy of faith. Only by believing and trusting in God’s promises, and through no works or achievement of our own, do we receive eternal life.

• The priesthood of all believers: Christians are “members of one another” (Ephesians 4:25, NRSV). In God’s eyes, Christians are all on the same level. We each have a ministry to fulfill to one another and to people out-side the faith. Martin Luther said we’re “reciprocally and mutually one.”

President’s Message

What is church or the church or a church? This is a question that I find myself reflecting on recently. Per-haps that is because I’m questioning or expanding my own understanding of the term. Often, we use the word to designate a building. As a child, I was told that we were going to church which resulted in going to a par-ticular building. However, doesn’t the word biblically refer to “the group of believers” or “the assembly”? Then another question appears--what is the purpose of the church? Again, there are a variety of answers that are often based on our experiences. Some include a place to worship, studying the word, helping others, shar-ing the word, and the list goes on. In our current book study we read that many churches slowly evolve into a self-preservation phase of maintaining a building and familiar things of the past—their church. Perhaps we need to reflect on what ELCA Bishop Eaton reminded us to remember—that we are called to wel-come the stranger, feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick and those in prison, and work for justice and peace in the world. If this is to be our goal as the church, my thoughts—about what church is and what its purpose is—definitely need to undergo some revision. Perhaps you have some thoughts that might help me refine my understandings. After you’ve given this some thought, please put your response on the poster in the narthex. Sincerely,

Al Myers

The Water of Life: a Bible Day Camp Campers will make a big splash this summer at St. Mark Lutheran Church! Children who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade as of June are invited to a day camp sponsored by The Mechanicsburg Area Lutheran churches and staffed by mem-bers of the Camp Nawakwa team. This year, we'll spend a week exploring that all-important element, water. We all need water to live our physical lives, and at camp we'll discover that water is also a source of Christian spiritual life.

Our week of camp will kick off at 4:30 on Sunday, June 18th with a potluck dinner and celebration for campers and their families. Our regular camp will run 8:45am-4:30pm from Monday, June 19th through Friday, June 23rd. Childcare is available before camp beginning at 8am and after camp ending at 5:15pm. Our day will be filled with singing, crafts, indoor and outdoor recreation, large group worship, and small group Bible study that will help campers dive into Bible stories that shower them with a new awareness of how water and life are gifts from God. Lunch will be provided daily. Cost per camper is $150. Scholar-ships for those with further financial need will be available upon request. Call Katie Swartz at 717-755-4482 with questions or to register.

This year’s Letter Carrier’s Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive takes place on Saturday, May 13 and benefits local food pantries like New Hope. Leave a donation of non-perishable food at your mailbox and stamp out hunger.

David Brooks, author of The Road to Character (Random House), created a moral bucket list in an effort to develop “eulogy virtues” — the traits praised at people’s funerals. Qualities such as humility, de-pendence and energizing love offer more joy than any “résumé vir-tues” ever will, he writes. “There’s joy in freely chosen obedience to organizations, ideas and people. There’s joy in mutual stumbling. There’s an aesthetic joy we feel when we see morally good action, when we run across someone who is quiet and humble and good, when we see that however old we are, there’s lots to do ahead.”

To be quite honest, when asked about how I feel about Filey’s congregation, my typical response has been – “We are very friendly.” I need to rethink my answer as well and be part of refocusing our congregation-al life to be consciously and explicitly centered in Christ.

If you would like to refocus your answer as well, perhaps you will consider attending the lecture by Dr. Rev. David Daubert at the synod assembly. He is due to speak Friday, June 2nd beginning at 1:30 and ending at 4 with breaks in-between and Q&A time following. We’ve mastered being nice, so let us together discover how we can also renew our congregation to be known for how we center ourselves in God, how we encounter God in Jesus, and how we share this God with others, helping people in their life’s journey with Jesus.

Blessings, Pastor Debbie

Our Story “For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” (Matthew 18:20)

Where two or three are gathered in my name, God promises to be. How we can live into that story? Who will gather with us? What person or persons do we need to invite to a gathering? Where will we be gathering so that God can meet us? What unusual places can with think of to meet? Please share your story so that we, as a faith community, can live into our story! God, whose utter desire is to be in relationship with us, can and does meet us in places we never dreamed possible. Don’t forget to share with whom and where God showed up – your “God Sightings”. The rest of us would love to hear so that we can be better attuned to His presence with us.
