Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Grace and Peace to you from our Lord and Savior,

February makes me think of Valentine’s

“Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of

salvation, purchase of God, Born of His Spirit, washed in his blood.” Our gifts of

love from God are forgiveness and salvation!

Valentine’s day was created as a reminder that we need to show each other love,

but it has become nothing more than a commercial commodity – a day where love

is bought – sometimes without thought or real meaning. Love isn’t something

we buy; love isn’t even something we feel. Rather, love is an action. It is a con-

scious choice to live out grace and mercy and justice which has been given to us

by God first.

My aunt knew this love; she lived this love, and she shared this love. I told you

earlier that she was married to my uncle for sixty-three years. I’m sure they had

difficult times in their marriage as well as good times. But I always marvel at

couples who stay together for such a long time. I wonder “what is the secret to

lasting love?” Is it Valentine’s day cards? Or flowers? Or something else?

What sustains couples for the hills and valleys of a lifetime?

I’ll share with you what my aunt’s answer was. Love, for her, was praying with

my uncle every morning before rising out of bed. In prayer, they remembered

whose they were, where they came from, and to whom they belonged. In prayer

(and in singing the hymns), they were reminded of the love that God had for

them. In prayer and song, they were strengthened and renewed to face the trou-

bles, hardships, and brokenness of this world together. In prayer and song, they

could face each other and others in love.

This Valentine’s day, instead of buying a card for your loved one, why not try

singing a hymn with your family in remembrance of God’s love or pray with your

spouse. This is where you will find true, lasting love.

Blessings from the pastor!

Your Sister in Christ,

Pastor Debbie

Evangelism “Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are

varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of ac-

tivities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone."

~1 Corinthians 12:4-6

God gives everyone special gifts and talents. Some people are

good with children, others with woodwork, some can sing well,

and I know there are people in this congregation that can cook!

Whenever someone compliments you on one of these gifts or tal-

ents ("this cake is excellent", "you have such a nice voice", etc.)

give the glory back to God! A statement such as "God has really

blessed me with this gift" is evangelism. It can be that simple!

Blessings!

President’s Message

As we begin a new year and I begin my term as your President, I would like to ask God’s blessing on all of us.

I welcome all help and advice you have for me, and I am looking forward to my time of serving the congrega-

tion.

There are still many challenges ahead for the New Year. Together we will work harmoniously to find the best

solutions we can to finish the needed final touches to our new church. Working on ways to enlarge participa-

tion and gather new parishioners into the body of Christ will be another focus. God has blessed us so we must

be going in the right direction.

Thanks to all the out going members of council Al Myers, Joanne Keeny, Tim Strouse, Glenn Sadler, and

Kenedy Keiffer for their hard work and diligence to all important matters of the church.

To the new members of the council Denise Roth, Rebecca Davis, and Emma Strouse, Let me thank you in ad-

vance for your service. May God’s blessing be upon all of us.

Your servant in Christ,

Jerry O’ Sullivan

Fellowship Notes

Fellowship

We will celebrate February birthdays and Baptism anniversaries on Sunday. February 2 with Sweet Treats. I

forgot to post the list of members who do not know their Baptism anniversaries in January, so we will honor

them in February along with the February celebrants.

The 2nd will also be Souper Bowl Sunday; please bring cans of soup for New Hope Ministries.

February 9 we will celebrate the Olympics with Olympic Sunday. Melanie and Tom Lighty will be providing

a Pancake and Sausage Breakfast following the service for $7 per person (children 8 and under are free) with

all proceeds benefitting the Special Olympics. Join us for breakfast and fellowship while supporting a wonder-

ful program.

February 16 we will celebrate a belated Valentine's Day with Special cherry and chocolate valentine treats.

On February 23 we will welcome new members into our Christ Lutheran Church family.

As we work on the Fellowship calendar for 2014, we are looking for fresh ideas for congregation get-

togethers; if you have any ideas or would like to join the ministry/committee please contact Dottie Shultz (766-

0457 or [email protected])

Prayer Shawl Ministry

The Prayer Shawl Ministry makes prayer shawls to give to those congregation members or friends who are

facing a life crisis and need to be surrounded by love from God and the Christ Lutheran Church family.

All are invited to create shawls, knitted or crocheted. Patterns are available near the shawls in the Narthex;

take a pattern or use one of your own. The copied patterns you can keep, but please return the books. There

are no special rules or requirements, only your desire to surround a friend with God’s love. On the last Sunday

of each month I will bring in yarn that has been donated, take what you need. If you have yarn to donate, give

it to Dottie Shultz.

There is a journal with the shawls. The first section (pink paper) is to record the information on the recipient;

the second section (green paper) is to record all the shawls made. When you complete a shawl add it to the

rack and record it in the journal; when you take a shawl record it in the journal.

The shawls are for anyone facing a life crisis. If you know someone who could use a prayer shawl you may

take one and deliver it yourself or let Pastor Debbie or a committee member know and we can make the deliv-

ery. There are cards with the shawls to include with your gift. The cover has a prayer or scripture reading

with room on the inside for a personal note.

Hopefully when we get more people working on shawls we can add baby blankets for the newest members of

our Church family.

If anyone is interested in co-chairing or joining this committee please contact Dottie Shultz (766-0457 or

[email protected]). Currently we work on our own at home, but if enough people are interested in

meeting regularly at the church to work on shawls we will schedule a time.

Please share your talents and make a Prayer Shawl for a friend in need.

an unthinkable tragedy in her community, a tragedy for which one of her beloved sons was responsible, propelled Terri

into the public’s eye. In her words, “I saw the emergency vehicles go by, prayed, not knowing our very own son was the

cause of an unspeakable tragedy occurring nearby at that very moment.” She describes herself as one who has walked

through circumstances beyond her own ability to cope yet has found strength and even joy along the way.

Nursery School: We will be busy learning about people and their different

jobs. Anyone who would like to come to school to talk about their job, please

let Janet Davis know. We would love to have you. Also we will be doing

some special "caring for other activities". February is a good month to give

those special people in your life an extra hug.

A big thank you to those people who have donated items. It is greatly appreciated. For the month of Febru-

ary we could use napkins.

We still have some openings for the 2014-2015 school year. If you know of anyone, please have them call

the school at 432-2037.

Thanks,

Janet

Highlights

THANK YOU

Congregation of Christ Lutheran Church, Filey’s

In 2013 the members of Christ Lutheran Church, Filey’s have reached deep into their pockets, offered

their time and given generously to many efforts locally, nationally, and worldwide.

Throughout the year, Filey’s members have supported Lutheran World Relief (LWR) by making dona-

tions to Colorado Flood victims, Typhoon Haiyan, and the U.S. Tornados not to mention the many other

efforts Lutheran World Relief has supported. Let’s not forget the school kits that were prepared for the

children from around the world desiring the simple tools needed to acquire an education. To see LWR’s

thank you go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rz_H8Ct0HQc&feature=youtu.be

Many other collections and fund raising efforts were made to support organizations and individuals such

as New Hope Ministries, the ELCA Malaria Campaign, Seeding the Future Campaign, Pastor John

Mwasakilali, the Daycare and The Learning Center.

Most recently you graciously gave to God’s Global Barnyard, Dollars for Diapers, the adopted

Harrisburg family, the family needing rent money to stay in their home during the holiday season.

Your thoughtfulness most recently provided:

God’s Global Barnyard $350.00

Dollars for Diapers $140.00

The Adopted Harrisburg Family:

This family received a decorated Christmas tree in addition to the $315.00 collected to sup-

ply each member of the family with purchased gift(s) valued up to $45.00.

The family needing rent:

This family received $200.00 from CLC, Filey’s. The total collection made by our West

Shore Conference totaled $3,000.00 which provided a couple months rent, food to fill their

pantry and provided Christmas gifts for the children.

Pastor says, “Thank You”

All who volunteered their time, creative decorating skills, and goodies to host the Holiday House Tour

To Kaitie McCann for her insightful and spirit filled children’s Christmas Pageant which she wrote and

directed. (And to her mom, Robin, for moral support and helpfulness)

To all the Children of CLC, Filey’s, the Learning Center, and the Nursery School for filling us with the

Gospel of Christ’s birth through song and skit. It was a great turn out and a wonderful performance.

To all who provided food for the congregational pot-luck. It was all very yummy!

For all you faithful volunteers who helped New Hope with the “Christmas Blessing Express”. Without

your contributions, volunteer time, and prayers, this special event wouldn’t be possible!

To all those cookie bakers out there who so graciously provided cookies for the many events held here dur-

ing the month of December and for the cookies and goodies provided for the Cookie Trays to the shut-

ins. Thank you for your time and talents and your willingness to extend a hand of hospitality to those

who can’t worship with us. It is a ministry of love which lets them know that they haven’t been forgot-

ten by their faith community.

To all those who gave up several evenings of their time to come and learn the new sound system! Now we

can all hear the good news of Jesus Christ being proclaimed, sung, prayed, etc. with better sound quali-

ty. Stay tuned as we prepare to get the sound panels installed soon.

Thank you to Eileen and Jerry O’Sullivan for taking their time to organize, collect, and arrange the poinset-

tias for Christmas. They were beautiful!

Thank you to Dottie Shultz for providing the church with many donations of decorations to fill the space

with wonder, sparkle, and glitz during the Christmas season. We appreciate her skill at decorating.

To Jean Wiltrout for the many hours of preparing the altar and worship space for worship! So many color

changes in two months! And for running the Advent Project – God’s Global Barnyard.

To Jeanine Fortney for taking orders, picking up, and distribution of the nut sale items!

Christmas time is a time when the needs of the community are given greater attention. I thank all of you

for your support and contributions to the following collections: Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, the

family in need of rent money, Fern’s family (grandchildren), God’s Global Barnyard, Heifer Interna-

tional Bag Lunch, and Dollars for Diapers for residents in West Virginia hit by the chemical spill/water

disaster.

To Allison Davis for representing us at Winterfest as an adult leader! Wow how she is growing up!

Thank you to FULP for providing a wonderful worship experience through Lessons and Carols. It was

great to worship alongside of you all once again.

Thank you to Kevin Lehman for the continued wood work (especially around the Good Shepherd Win-

dow, the scroll work in the narthex, and the built-in book cases in the youth room)! Thanks for using

your God given gifts to the beauty of our church!

Thank you to all of you for the many kind cards and gifts at Christmas time! Your care and concern for

Paul, Nick, and me are deeply appreciated!

Thank you to Al Myers, JoAnne Keeny, Tim Strouse, and Glenn Snyder for their time and commitment to

serving this church in leadership positions in the council. Al, you did a fantastic job at keeping us on

track, focused, and moving forward. I appreciated working with you as you were not reluctant to get

the job done! JoAnne, your skills at typing and getting those minutes to us was amazing. Thank you

for all the long hours you put into being secretary for the council. Tim and Glenn, I know you both had

many other obligations (both family and work) that kept you busy, but you still made as many council

meetings as possible and did your part regardless. Thank you for being willing to serve our congrega-

tion in such an important way.

To all the new council members, thank you for being willing to step up to this very important ministry of

the church! Sometimes we think of the administrative side of the church as secular and not sacred.

But the council’s job is to discern the call of the Spirit and God’s will for us in order to lead us into the

future. This can’t be done if we just consider our roles as secular. Your prayer life and discernment

within this group of people is a very big part of what we do. Thank you all for your eagerness to serve

in this capacity. I look forward to working with you in the coming year.

To Al Myers, Tom Gruber, and Rolla Lehman for their willingness to be included in the “Ventures for

Growing Stewards” team which will prepare, teach, and lead our congregation through a year-long

stewardship program.

As you can all see, there was a lot going on the past two months and a lot to be thankful for. Your faithful-

ness to Christ through the many ways in which all of you have given of your time, talents, and treas-

ures has been a sign of your willingness to be servants and disciples of Christ Jesus. May God bless

your work, bearing fruit for the kingdom, and may He continue to bless all of us as we walk together

during this next year.

More Thank Yous

To the CLC Filey's church family,

Thank you for the prayers, compassion and kindness offered during Jim's recent illness and

journey to the next life. Whether it was a plate of cookies, a kind word, a prayer, a card,

or even just a simple hug, we appreciated it more than we can express. It is a comfort to

have a church family that demonstrates Christ's love for each other to help carry you

through such a difficult time.

In Christian love, Dolores Hertzler & Jane McCurdy

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed food, supplies and money for

Sunday Fellowship following the service and for other events throughout the year.

The Fellowship Ministry once again has not used any church funds for our minis-

try to the congregation. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

Thank you to everyone who has donated empty ink cartridges and used the church

rewards cards at Office Max and Staples. Your donations saved the church $482.12

in 2013.

Ink Recycling – $410.00

Rewards on Purchases - $72.12

Dollars 4 Diapers Update from the Lower Susquehanna Synod

The disastrous chemical spill into a major water supply created an immediate need for relief aid in our neighboring West Virginia-Western Maryland Synod. When asked how we could best help, Lu-theran Community Partners asked for diapers, an important (and expensive) staple item for many of the state's poorest workers and their families. Unfortunately, lower wage restaurant and service in-dustry workers were among the hardest hit by the lack of water and reduced work opportunities. Bishop Dunlop asked our Lower Susquehanna Synod congregations to help with a suggested spe-cial offering of $1 per worshiper. You responded with amazing generosity. Thank you! To date we know that at least $2,584.69 has been raised by congregations who responded to our request for information. Others, such as St. Paul's (York St.) Hanover, have designated this effort as a special giving opportunity for the month of February. Thank you to Brickerville United Lutheran Church, Christ Lutheran Church, Fileys; Mannsville Lu-theran Church, Elliottsburg; Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, York; St. Stephen Lutheran Church, New Kingstown; and Trinity Lutheran Church, Camp Hill, for sharing above and beyond to love God and neighbor. Together Lower Susquehanna Lutherans are caring for and feeding others as we have been fed by Christ.

Advent Friends Update

Thank you for helping God’s Global People.

This past advent season we filled God’s Global Barnyard with:

5 Chicks

3 Ducks

3 Pigs

2 Goats.

These animals will help others to earn a living and feed their families.

Events and Opportunities List

There are so many ways to serve, volunteer and connect with others here at Christ Lutheran Church, Filey’s and the community around us. Be sure to check out the announcements in both the bulletin and the newsletter. Some of these opportu-nities require you to sign up. For your convenience find a list below of events op-portunities.

Like to read? Everyone has the opportunity to” Rent-the-Book” for $1.00. Keep it as long as you like and return it for someone else to enjoy. All proceeds will go to the building fund. On the book rental shelves you will find a variety of mur-der mysteries, romance novels, non-fiction, and inspirational books. If the book you rent is one that the owner wants returned, please note that rental in the little red notebook on the top shelf (next to the money box) so that when it is time to return it to its owner, we will be able to track it down. If the book is to be re-turned to its owner, the owner’s name will be in-side the front cover. The book selected for February is "Closer to the Light, Learning From the Near-Death Experiences of Children" written by Melvin Morse, M.D. This is an old book with information on what may await us after death. It is responsible, highly readable, and cer-tainly thought-provoking. Dr. Morse is a renowned pediatrician and leader in the field of near-death research. "Closer to the Light" is upbeat and heartening.
