Paperless Music

By Pastor Andy

A couple years ago I attended a conference at United Theological Semi-nary in St. Paul. It was put on by Music That Makes Community, teaching participants the value of and skills for paperless singing.

Paperless singing is a movement across the United States to sing more dynamically in groups, with attention to the song and one another instead of looking down at a page or up at a screen. It helps the music to come alive and helps everyone to feel like they have the skills to sing. There’s no requirement to read music, or even to be able to read. Paperless singing makes sing-ing accessible to everyone.

If you haven’t visited Refuel & Refresh Dinner Church on Wednesday evenings yet, you should. We rely on paperless singing. There are no printed song sheets. We use fewer consumable resources for these worship services.

Paperless music is broader than the Church. It’s being used for Community Sings, events to bring communities together to sing with one another – no experience or particular skills necessary. Because it’s so accessible, paperless singing works great with children even before they can read. I regularly hear my daughter Hilde singing along with us on Wednesday evenings. It’s also being used to help people with dementia come together with joyful spirits and participate in a shared event.

Now, I love a robust hymn with four part harmony and my spirit is fed by a praise song like “Ubuntu” that we sing on Sunday morning. We have gifted musicians among us and we value our music heritage. Trouble is, singing is becoming counter-cultural. More and more, churches are counting on professional and skilled musicians to lead congregational song and many worshipers feel that our music is not accessible.

So, shameless plug: come and check out what we’re doing on Wednesday evenings. You might enjoy it. Plus, singing is like a beautiful combination of chocolate and vegetables: it’s both sweet and good for you. To learn more about paperless singing, visit musicthatmakescommunity.org.

Ginny update: Our daughter Ginny was born 10 weeks early on August 20, weighing 2 lbs. 12 oz. Ginny is now 5 lb. 13 oz., but probably over 6 lbs. by the time you read this. She’s healthy, sweet, and cuddly. She still has not mastered eating, which is what is keeping her in the hospital at Children’s, St. Paul. Continued prayers are appreciated for her eating skills to mature. Thanks for all the prayers and support!

THANK YOU!

A big Thank You! to all CLC’ers who helped make the 67th Annual Roast Pork and Sauerkraut Supper a success! From peeling Rutabagas to serving hot, steaming plates to our diners and take-out takers, we thank all the persons involved. Lake Elmo could not have a fabulous, historic community, feel-good meal without each

one of us. Bless Us ALL!

There will be a De-Briefing meeting at Lake Elmo Inn again this year, on Monday October 21st beginning at 6:00. We invite anyone to join in this time of review, decompress, and debrief of this year’s pros and cons over dessert and a beverage. We deeply appreciate everything the Lake Elmo Inn does for our event, hence we meet at the Inn. Come One, Come All, to De-Brief!

Next Year’s date is 10-10-2020...Be Ready!

You’re Invited: Affordable Housing Community Forum Please join the community call to action on homelessness and affordable housing.
