CHRIST CHRONICLE
Christ Lutheran Church and School 7701 Candelaria Road NE Albuquerque, NM 87110
From the Pastor
Dear friends,
I want to share something I read the other day:
“Once there was a man who dared God to speak:
Burn the bush like you did for Moses, God.
And I will follow.
Collapse the walls like you did for Joshua, God.
And I will fight.
Still the waves like you did on Galilee, God.
And I will listen.
And so the man sat by a bush, near a wall, close to the sea
and waited for God to speak.
And God heard the man, so God answered.
He sent fire, not for a bush, but for a church.
He brought down a wall, not of brick, but of sin.
He stilled a storm, not of the sea, but of a soul.
And God waited for the man to respond.
And He waited . . .
And He waited . . .
And waited.
But because the man was looking at the bushes, not hearts;
bricks and not lives, seas and not souls,
he decided that God had done nothing.
Finally he looked at God and asked, “Have you lost Your power?”
And God looked at him and said, “Have you lost your hearing?”
— from “A Gentle Thunder” by Max Lucado
God is a God who touches
your life in unexpected ways
at unexpected times with the
fullness of His grace and
love. He is a God who is con-
stantly calling you back to
Himself with soft words and
a gentle heart. Yet, when
those soft words are ignored
or forgotten because of your

own selfish desires and interests,
God is not above using a firm guid-
ing hand and a voice that sounds
like thunder to get your attention.
God uses His Word to remind you of
your sinfulness, your disobedience
to Him, your guilt, and even your
lack of commitment in living your
life in service to Him. God’s Law is
designed to get your attention — to
help you recognize that without Him
your life is in danger of being forev-
er lost!
Fortunately, for your sake, God sent
His Son, Jesus Christ, to touch your
life with the gentle whisper of His
love. With His heart focused on for-
giveness, the Son of God entered
into this world to bring you into a
new and restored relationship with
your Father in heaven. “In the begin-
ning was the Word. . .and the Word
became flesh and dwelt among
us.” (John 1:1 & 14)
God’s goal in sending His own Son,
Jesus, into this world was to show
you in the best way possible the full-
ness of His grace and love. He gave
His own Son for your sake. He trad-
ed the life of His Son for your life
and mine. He worked this miracle of
life in a most unexpected way —
through death on a cross! He works
His grace each day in your life
through the unconditional for-
giveness He offers to you on Christ’s
behalf! He continues to love you for
who you are and accepts you right
where you are at — with the assur-
ance that He will shape you and
mold you with His hands, by the
power of His Spirit, for the purposes
of His heart!
Rest assured, God is indeed work-
ing in your life. He has not forgotten
you, nor has He forsaken you. God
has not lost His power. The question
you need to ask yourself is: “Am I
listening?”
That question is important for each
one of us as we continue to “Step
Forward Together in Christ” here at
Christ Lutheran Church and School.
This past year, we focused on the
Chancel renovation, and now our
attention turns to our mission out-
reach efforts with our School, the
East Albuquerque Mission, and oth-
ers. We listen to God, knowing He
has not lost His power! We listen to
God for His guidance in the most
effective ways to use the resources
He has entrusted to us in order to
further the work of His Kingdom.
In coming months, you will hear
more about our School, the Mis-
sions we support, the start of our
Stephen Ministry, and so much
more. Take the time to pray, to lis-
ten, and to join with others in the
Gospel work of growing God’s King-
dom at Christ Lutheran Church and
School.

CHRIST CHRONICLE
From the Principal
Mark von Soosten
Christ Lutheran Church and School
has begun a new marketing program
for our school. We are working to find new ways to
reach out to the community with information
about who we are and why Christ Lutheran School
can be a good option for
educating children.
We started out with a
survey that was con-
ducted in November and
December. On January
19, we had our Promot-
er’s Reception and on
February 9 we are going
to have a school Rally
Night, to open registra-
tion for the 2016-2017
school year. All of these
have been designed to
increase awareness of the school and to get defin-
itive feedback on how people regard our school.
Overall, the 165 parents, church members, alum-
ni, and parents of alumni gave Christ Lutheran
School a rating of the 76th percentile, which
means that their opinions about CLS were higher
than 76% of the people from more than 600
schools that have taken this survey! That’s a good
result.
Our next big upcoming event will be our school
rally night. There will be games for the students
and information for parents regarding plans for
the next school year. This will also be the start of
registration for the 2016-2017 school year.
School rally night will be Tuesday, February 9 with
sessions starting at 3:45 and again at 6:00 p.m.
In addition, there will be a school-wide scavenger
hunt and a drawing for a scrip gift card. Please
join us, and invite anyone you know that has
school-aged children. We want to share this infor-
mation with as many people as possible so that
we are reaching the largest number of students
with Christ’s saving Gospel message.
In Christ, Mark von Soosten

“Therefore go and make disciples of
all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son
and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching
them to obey everything I have com-
manded you.”
Jesus’ final words “The Great Commission” in Mat-
thew 28 have always resonated with me as march-
ing orders as we sow seeds so others can be
touched by The Good News of the Saving Grace of
Jesus Christ.
One of my favorite testimony stories that I have
shared with many of you deals with my good friend
Tom Douthit while we were growing up. We met each
other as we entered our freshman year of high
school and instantly became great friends.
One day when we were hanging out I invited him to a
Bible Study I was going to later that evening. He ac-
cepted and came to the study and continued to
come to the study. The one thing I did not know until
much later was that this was his first encounter with
The Gospel.
This is his testimony today on when he was intro-
duced to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. What makes it
more interesting is that now Tom is Senior Pastor of
one of the larger Churches in Houston called Bridge-
point. He has gone on from that small Bible study to
share the Gospel with thousands of people on an
ongoing basis literally baptizing hundreds or thou-
sands as well.
So why am I telling this story? It is because we really
do not know how God is going to use people to share
His Kingdom and that simple contacts on our part
may not only impact one person’s life but hundreds
of other’s lives as well.
We have a real opportunity with our school and our
pre-school. The children that go to our school hear (Continued on page 7)

Our season of Epiphany ends on February 7 with
The Transfiguration of Our Lord. God’s light and
glory have been made known during Jesus’ earth-
ly ministry. Now on the Mount of Transfiguration
Jesus literally dazzles, showing the disciples and
us how amazing is His glory! The choir anthem is
“This Is My Beloved Son,” words spoken by God
the Father from a cloud at the mountain.
Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, is on Feb-
ruary 10. We will have worship services at noon
and at 7 p.m. Lent is a time of repentance and
prayer. Thanks be to God that through our bap-
tism, we were baptized into Jesus’ death and res-
urrection and made heirs of His kingdom! Psalm
51 is a traditional reading on Ash Wednesday,
and the choir anthem quotes its words “Create In
Me a Clean Heart, O God.”
Our Wednesday Lenten services are based on a
series titled “Living Lent – As People of the Res-
urrection.” Each service focuses on a word to
consider while living Lent as Easter people. The
six words are Ponder, Purpose, People, Proclaim,
Praise, and Pain. Each service helps us see that
we are always alive in Christ, who died and was
raised.
On the sixth Wednesday evening of Lent, March
16, we have a special choir coming from Martin
Luther High School in Greendale, Wisconsin.
Their director, Tim Franz, was a classmate of the
von Soostens at Seward. The largest part of that
service will be their concert. We will be providing
a meal for them before the concert and housing
them that Wednesday night, about 50 students.
Please look at your calendars and see if you
would be able to help us with housing on March
16.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16

Final Thought: By God’s grace we have taken many steps over the past three months to sustain and grow our school. We have many more to take. We are changing. Your continued prayers are coveted. So much has happened so fast that I am sure we have overlooked something or have confused a few of you. Your comments, questions, and thoughts are always welcomed. God’s blessings on you month, Al Koschmann 271-1287 -- [email protected]

the message of Christ on a daily basis. For some of
them it is the only place they hear it.
For others it is a reinforcement of what they are
hearing at their churches and from their families.
Best yet for some it may be the first time they hear it
and then they bring their families to our Church so
they may hear it on an ongoing basis.
Every year we have multiple children Baptized out of
our school. Who knows, one of them may be the
next Tom Douthit and Baptize countless others as
God grows His kingdom.
It is critical that we share our school with those we
encounter – not because of the great education
their children will receive, which in itself would be a
reason to promote it. The most important reason to
share our school is because through it The Holy Spir-
it can work to Grow His Kingdom. What an awesome
field we have to sow seeds!
We have new brochures now available for you to
share within your sphere of influence. We are also
having weekly Open Houses called Walk-in Wednes-
days at which time we will share the love and awe-
some academic setting our school provides.
I ask you and challenge you to share our school with
others. Do this not only because of the help it pro-
vides with enrollment within our school but more im-
portantly – much more importantly – it may be the
time that the person you share with learns of the
love of Jesus Christ. It is that important.
God’s Peace,
Jerry

God Cares About You A ministry of Christ Lutheran Church
Farewell As I, Pastor Kluzek, now leave this ministry to pastor North of Denison,
Iowa I wanted to leave you, our partners with some final words. I am not
abandoning this ministry, as I have always been a partner in this ministry
with my prayers and donations, I will continue to do that. But as I shared
God's Word here I now go to share God's Word in Iowa. But this ministry
is in great hands and will continue. We have a mother church, a board, a
Director in Paul Mueller and an Evangelism Supervisor in Lionel. All those
who are continuing this ministry have been taught well how to do this
work. Will you continue to support them in this important work? They are
working in a very difficult area bringing the Word of God, the love of God,
and praying with people who are going through very tough times. This area
of Albuquerque, filled with drugs and violence is a like a desert for the Word
of God. The Word of God that God Cares About You brings is like a big fire hose of water changing lives for now and
eternally. The least we can do is support those who are serving in this area with our prayers and financial gifts. Thank
you to all who do! God bless you all!
“It is great to serve Jesus, it is greater still to also inspire others to serve Jesus.” Pastor Mark Kluzek

YOUTH NEWS
CHRIST CHRONICLE Page 13
There will be no meeting of
Honor Circle in February.
There are several events
which would interfere with
picking a date.
But----CHANGES MAY BE
COMING for Honor Circle. We will have dis-
cussed and planned in the January meeting, so
please watch the March Chronicle for the new for-
mat. We surely hope it will appeal to more
of our eligible ladies. And now I hope you can
hardly wait to read about it.
Eunice Hoeft
HONOR
CIRCLE
Since it is still not time for out-door trips this month,
we are planning to visit the Albuquerque Museum to
see their new Albuquerque History Gallery. Let's meet
on Friday, Feb. 19th by 10 a.m. in the church parking
lot to car pool. After we tour the exhibit, we will choose
a restaurant close by. Let Lee Swanger or Eunice
Hoeft know if you have questions or a preference for
an eating place. See you then.
Please tell Lee Swanger (294-6752) or Eunice Hoeft
(889-9705) if you plan to join us.
Quilting News
The quilters will meet in
February on Tuesday the
2nd, and the 16th.
We will have plenty of work to do; tying lap robes,
cutting squares, pressing fabrics, and time just
fellowshipping! Please plan to join us about 9 am
and stay for refreshments. We usually end by
noon, sometimes earlier. Are you wondering if
you will fit in? No worry, we invite everyone, in-
cluding YOU, to join us. Other questions may be
directed to Carol Bickel (821-8051) or Lois
Postenrieder (299-8388).
