Sr. Adults Day Out
April 14, 10 AM
Women on Mission will meet on Monday, April 7, at 2:00 PM, in the Philathea-Fidelis Sunday School classroom. We will make plans to ship clothing box to the orphanage in Honduras, and finalize plans for our Easter visit to Heritage Healthcare at Old Capitol. Hope to see you on April 7.
From Our Pastor Jonathan Witt
The Point of Easter
There is just something about Easter that makes me smile. If you grew up in a Southern, Church-going family like I did, you have a lot of memo-ries to look back on at Easter. I think of the many deliberations in past years concerning what my “Easter outfit” would be (some of which I would not want to be caught dead in this Easter). I recall hunting Easter eggs as a child, as well as hiding Easter eggs for my children. Oh, and my mouth waters at the thought of the many Easter dinners that I have shared with my family.
These memories of Easter are special to me, but my most important memories of Easter have been made in Church. That’s because it was in Church that I heard what Easter is really about. Though I did not get the point of Easter for many years, the truth finally dawned on me. Now I get the privilege of telling others what I have learned. There are really two points to Easter: a crucifixion and a resurrection; the end of a life and the beginning of a new life. That’s what the Bible is talking about, when it says that Jesus “…was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification” (Romans 4:25).
Easter Sunday would not be Easter without the Good Friday that pre-ceded it, when Jesus was nailed to a cross. That’s because His death had a point! Jesus “…was delivered up because of our offenses,” rather than because of anything that He had done. The Bible tells us that God “…made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). Taking the place of sinners carried a high price, because the Bible tells us that “...the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23a). But the Bible tells us that Jesus did it anyway out of love for us: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8). There would be no point to Easter Sunday if Jesus had not died for us on Good Friday.
Easter Sunday is actually a celebration of Resurrection Sunday, when Jesus came back to life and walked out of His tomb. Even this was done for you and me, because if He had not risen from the dead, His death would not have made a difference for us. Jesus “…was raised because of our justification,” or in light of the rest of Scripture, to prove that His death could justify us of our sins when we believe. The Bible says that “…if Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins” (1 Corinthians 15:17)! That’s because if Jesus had not risen from the dead, then He would have just been a regular man dying for his own sins. He would have been unable to take anyone’s place or pay any-one’s price. But Jesus did arise from the dead, and when He did, it was a sign from God to all, saying, “This is the One I told you about! This is the One who can save you! This is the One to believe in!” Just like there would be no point to believing in Him if Jesus had not risen from the dead, there would be no point to Easter, either.
Easter is about what God did to spare us and to give us life, but you will miss out on what God did for you, if you miss the point of Easter. That’s why I’m so glad that I finally got the point!
