Christ Episcopal Church
In the City of Poughkeepsie, New York
All Saints Sunday November 1, 2020 at ten-thirty in the morning
“When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him.”
Matthew 5:1
The Beatitudes from today’s gospel reading are from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount,
depicted in a stained glass window in the north aisle of the church.
The Vestry and Wardens of Christ Episcopal Church require that anyone who is inside
the church must wear a mask at all times, unless duties (such as reading or taking
communion) require that it briefly be removed.
Please make sure that your mask covers both your nose and mouth. Those who do not
comply will be asked to leave our building.

THE WORD OF GOD
COLLECT OF THE DAY
Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Let us pray.
Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical
body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and
godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly
love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God,
in glory everlasting. Amen.
The Lesson
A READING FROM THE BOOK OF REVELATION After this I, John, looked, and there was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation,
from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, robed in
white, with palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice, saying,
"Salvation belongs to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels
stood around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their
faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing,
"Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might
be to our God forever and ever! Amen."
Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, robed in white, and where have they
come from?" I said to him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me, "These are they who
have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of
the Lamb.
"For this reason they are before the throne of God, and worship him day and night within his temple,
and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will hunger no more, and thirst no
more; the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of the throne
will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away
every tear from their eyes."

Celebrant: We pray for the 230,000 Americans who have died from the Coronavirus.
THE GOSPEL
Celebrant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.
People Glory to you, Lord Christ.
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to
him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
"Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
"Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you
falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way
they persecuted the prophets who were before you." Chapter 5:1-12
Celebrant The Gospel of the Lord.
People Praise to you, Lord Christ.
THE SERMON The Rev. Susan B. Fortunato
THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen
and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with
the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from
heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made
man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On
the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the
dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the
Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the
Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to
come. Amen.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM We Remember them James M. Fitzwilliam
text from the Jewish Book of Prayer
In the rising of the sun, and in its going down: We remember them.
In the blowing of the wind, and in the chill of winter: We remember them.
In the opening of the buds, and in the re-birth of spring: We remember them.
In the blueness of the skies, and in the warmth of summer: We remember them.
In the rustling of the leaves, and the beauty of the autumn: We remember them.
In the beginning of the year, and at its end: We remember them.
When we are weary and in need of strength: We remember them.
When we are lost and sick of heart: We remember them.
When we have joys and special celebrations we long to share: We remember them.
So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are part of us, and we are part of them. We remember them

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Lift up your hearts.
People We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is right to give our thanks and praise.
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and every-where to give thanks to you, Father
Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
For in the multitude of your saints you have surrounded us with a great cloud of witnesses, that we
might rejoice in their fellowship, and run with endurance the race that is set before us; and, together
with them, receive the crown of glory that never fades away.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the
company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
Sanctus S-125
We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in
creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and
above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate
from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us
from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into
truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks
to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given
14
for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said,
"Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for
the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."
Therefore, according to his command, O Father,
We remember his death,
We proclaim his resurrection,
We await his coming in glory;
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from
your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament
of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we
may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all
things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your
saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours,
Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we
forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD
Celebrant Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;
People Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
The Gifts of God for the People of God.
COMMUNION ANTHEM The Company of Saints James M. Fitzwilliam
text by the composer
The Company of Saints in power and majesty displayed; Triumphant faith and rich reward!
Yet greater still in might, and humbler still in love and grace, is He who came to save them all from
death.
The saints arrayed in white, bright vision robed in light, like stars that shine through the night;
Yet one still shines more fair: Jesus Christ; Jesus Christ our Lord, by all the saints adored.
Let all now join the saints in praising God alone!
15
THE POST COMMUNION PRAYER
God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation;
you have united us with Christ and one another;
and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth.
Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to
the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.
