Come enjoy building LEGO Action Crazy Contraptions from Klutz! From the Supercharged Speedster to the Wall Rocket Racer, all these contraptions spin, stretch, or speed into action! Campers will build and utilize all these action contraptions along with many others. There will also be plenty of free build time, and campers can bring in their own LEGOs to show others! Participants will take home the contraption kit so they can build all of these cool machines again and again! Campers will also use iPads and appropriate applications to research, design, and build each day. iPads are provided to campers for use during the week.

App DesignJuly 20 – 24 • 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. • Rising 6 – 8 • $175Instructor: Karen Polstra, CCES Middle School Technology TeacherWant to learn to program an app for your cell phone or tablet? App Inventor is an application from MIT designed to teach students how to create simple apps that can be downloaded to Android devices. (Apple has a more closed development environment; therefore Apple products cannot be used.) Camp provides cell phones, so bringing your own is optional. After learning the basics of App Inventor, students will work individually or in pairs to develop their own app. App Inventor is free, so students can continue improving their app and creating others on their own computers after camp is over. This camp is a great introduction to programming concepts and a stepping stone toward application design for all devices. Check out appinventor.mit.edu for more information. This requires logical thinking, similar to math classes, so students (especially younger ones) need to feel comfortable with mathematical concepts to enjoy this camp to the fullest.

CodingJune 8 – 12 • 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. • Rising 2 – 5 • $135Instructor: Robin Yerkes, CCES Lower School Technology TeacherLearn to write computer code! This trendy new concept is fun and practical. Using applications such as Tynker, Scratch, and more, students will build games, characters, and complete challenges all while building critical thinking skills. The problem-solving techniques learned to design will translate to many parts of a camper’s academic life. All computers, iPads, and applications are provided. Students will make copies of their work to bring home and continue to tweak after camp ends.

Crafty ScienceJune 8 – 12 • 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. • Rising K5 – 2 • $135Instructor: Robin Yerkes, CCES Lower School Teacher Join in the hands-on science fun! Campers interested in the sun, wind, magnets, insects, plants, or water should come and experiment as camp gets “crafty” about science. Every day will be filled with age-appropriate experiments and activities to create take-home items! Handouts for each science skill will be sent home daily for sharing with family and friends, and projects created will go home to be enjoyed by all.

Digging for DinosaursJune 15 – 19 • 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. • Rising K5 – 2 • $150Instructor: Robin Yerkes, CCES Lower School TeacherRoam with us as we uncover the mystery of ages past. Become a paleontologist by digging for dinosaur bones, studying fossils, and considering how dinosaurs became extinct. During this fun-filled week, campers will play games, make their own fossils, and create a dinosaur model to take home. If you “dig” this, then come and join us on an expedition through time!

One can create all kinds of cool things using items found in the kitchen! In fact this whole week is full of science experiments using “chemicals” you could ingest. Campers will study states of matter, acids and bases, and chemical reactions with experiments that create amazing products and allow exploration. Come create lava lamps, chromatography artwork, make acid/base indicators, explode a Diet Coke Mentos geyser, and even make ice cream!

LEGOmaniacs!June 15 – 19 • 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. • Rising 1 – 2 • $150July 13 – 17 • 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. • Rising 1 – 2 • $150Instructor: Robin Yerkes, CCES Lower School Technology TeacherLEGOS, LEGOS, everywhere! There will also be free build time for campers to create amazing, unique pieces that fit a theme or pieces for a challenge.

LEGO RoboticsJuly 20 – 24 • 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. • Rising 5 – 8 • $175Instructor: Karen Polstra, CCES Middle School Technology TeacherThis camp is designed as a fun introduction to robotics and programming. Students will use LEGO Mindstorm NXT robots to complete interesting challenges. Every student will have his/her own robot to use. Activities will involve building a robot and then programming it to complete various challenges. The week ends with a robotic sumo wrestling match where campers design a robot that can push other robots off a playing field. Will your robot be the victor? Students will not take robots home, but family is invited to watch the showdown. This camp is a great combination of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and FUN!

Make–a–bot: Design & Program RobotsJuly 27 – 31 • 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. • Rising 6 – 8 • $175Instructor: Karen Polstra, CCES Middle School Technology TeacherParticipants will build a robot body from foam sheets, card stock, and other structural supplies, and then program it to move. The possibilities are endless for robot shape (dog, cat, cheerleader, dinosaur) and for how it can move (wag tail, spin around, throw up arms, chomp on a prey, or whatever you can imagine). Sound effects will be added to make it even more realistic. Various sensors, such as distance, sound, or light levels, can be used to start movements. Visit tinyurl.com/lpzg7bo to view examples. Camp will use Hummingbird Robotics kits and Scratch programming language. Students may work individually or in pairs. Robots will not go home, but parents are invited to see the completed product and videos of the robots will be available to view. Programming the robots requires logical thinking, similar to math classes, so students (especially younger ones) need to feel comfortable with mathematical concepts to enjoy this camp to the fullest.

Rube Goldberg Engineering ExperienceJuly 13 – 17 • 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. • Rising 5 – 8 • $150Coach: Kimberly Morgan, Christ Church Director of High School Ministries, and former CCES teacher and coachRube Goldberg is a famous inventor and cartoonist known for making simple tasks ridiculously complex. Each year teams from all over the world compete to create A Rube Goldberg Machine which “is an overly complex contraption, designed with humor and a narrative, to accomplish a simple task.”1 The machine typically involves a chain reaction of events to produce the final simple step. In his honor campers, will enjoy the challenge to turn a simple task, like flipping a light switch on with the flick of a finger, into an incredible maze of steps of reactions to finally end with task completion, like the light switch being flipped on. Campers can choose from a variety of tasks such as flipping on a light, pulling a tissue out of a box, squirting a bit of hand sanitizer, popping open a bag, or create their own simple end product. Assorted items from home may be needed depending on the crazy steps a student takes to the finish, but most materials can be found within Summer Encounters’ huge supply. Campers will not participate in the official contest held in California, but will enjoy the machine creation all the same. 1 Visit www.rubegoldberg.com/ for more information and examples.
