Children are always welcome at St. Barnabas. If you would like to have your child with you during the service, books and toys for children are available in the entrance. We have a “family room” at the back of the church, where you can see and hear the service if you need some privacy with your small child. If you prefer, you can take your child to our nursery for infants and toddlers. Kid's Classes (during the 10 am service only): Pre-Kinder, Kinder, and 1st to 4th graders are welcome in Room 2, next to the nursery. 5th through 12th graders are welcome to join our Youth Forum class in the Forum Room (the smaller room adjoined to the Parish Hall). On the 4th Sundays of each month, the youth can sit with their families in the sanctuary. On any occurring 5th Sundays of the month, they optionally serve in various areas in the service. Healing Station - During our 10am communion, we have a healing station located in the back of the sanctuary on the west, choir side of the church. Those who wish prayers for healing of mind, body or spirit for themselves or someone else are invited to receive the laying on of hands by a member of our healing ministry team. Quiet time - Help us provide a peaceful and worshipful environment by turning off all cell phones and by refraining from unnecessary conversation in the sanctuary. In addition, at the end of the service, you are welcome to sit back down and listen to the musical postlude. Please move outside before beginning conversations so that others may enjoy the music. Bidding (intercessory prayer) Book - If you would like to add a prayer to be read during the church service, you may add it to the “Bidding Book” located at the back of the church to the left of the doors. Flower and Candle Dedications - Candles on the altar are lighted by Jerri Pence in celebration of her daughter-in-law, Satoe. The floral arrangement has been placed by Art and Jane Delgadillo in memory of Art’s mother, Santiaga Orono Delgadillo. Last week, the floral arrangement had been placed by Lynne Schulz in memory of her father, Randal Ross.

ENTRANCE HYMN O for a thousand tongues to sing Blue Hymnal 493

The Celebrant says

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

OPENING ANTHEM, Pascha Nostrum

The Pascha Nostrum is an anthem used by many churches across the Anglican Communion during the season of Easter. The title is Latin for “Our Passover” and the text consists of the words of several verses of Scripture: 1 Corinthians 5:7–8, Romans 6:9–11, and 1 Corinthians 15:20–22. The opening language about “sacrifice” has been interpreted in many ways over the centuries. Of note, it is not Jesus making a sacrifice to God, but God making a sacrifice for us (all of creation).

THE COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant The Lord be with you.

People And also with you.

Celebrant Let us pray.

O God, whose blessed Son made himself known to his disciples in the breaking of bread: Open the eyes of our faith, that we may behold him in all his redeeming work; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Lessons

FIRST READING: Acts 9:1-6 [7-20] A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

1Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. 3Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. 4He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” 5He asked, “Who are you, Lord?” The reply came, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 6But get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” [7The men who were traveling with him stood speechless because they heard the voice but saw no one. 8Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9For three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank. 10Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” He answered, “Here I am, Lord.” 11The Lord said to him, “Get up and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul. At this moment he is praying, 12and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.” 13But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem; 14and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name.” 15But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings and before the people of Israel; 16I myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name.” 17So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid his hands on Saul and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your way here, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and his sight was restored. Then he got up and was baptized, 19and after taking some food, he regained his strength. For several days he was with the disciples in Damascus, 20and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “He is the Son of God.”]

During the season of Easter we often replace the Old

Testament reading with a reading about the early church and

followers of Jesus.

Psalm 30 The Cantor sings the Refrain, then All repeat

1I will exalt you, O LORD, because you have lifted me up * and have not let my enemies triumph over me. 2O LORD my God, I cried out to you, * and you restored me to health. 3You brought me up, O LORD, from the dead; * you restored my life as I was going down to the grave. Refrain 4Sing to the LORD, you servants of his; * give thanks for the remembrance of his holiness. 5For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye, * his favor for a lifetime. 6Weeping may spend the night, * but joy comes in the morning. Refrain 7While I felt secure, I said, “I shall never be disturbed. * You, LORD, with your favor, made me as strong as the mountains.” 8Then you hid your face, * and I was filled with fear. Refrain 9I cried to you, O LORD; * I pleaded with the Lord, saying, 10“What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the Pit? * will the dust praise you or declare your faithfulness? Refrain 11Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me; * O LORD, be my helper.” 12You have turned my wailing into dancing; * you have put off my sack-cloth and clothed me with joy. 13Therefore my heart sings to you without ceasing; * O LORD my God, I will give you thanks for ever. Refrain SECOND READING: Revelation 5:11-14 A Reading from the Revelation of John.

11I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12singing with full voice, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” 13Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing, “To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” 14And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the elders fell down and worshiped.

The Revelation to John is apocalyptic literature. This literary form was popular from about two hundred years before Jesus to about two hundred years after the death of Jesus. It is meant to show hope in the midst of all the awful things that are happening in the world. Thus, it is chock full of both violent and beautiful imagery.

GOSPEL: John 21:1-19

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

1Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. 2Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. 3Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. 4Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5Jesus said to them, “Children, you have no fish, have you?” They answered him, “No.” 6He said to them, “Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish. 7That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. 8But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off. 9When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. 10Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” 11So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. 12Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord. 13Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. 15When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.” 19(He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.”

THE SERMON The Rev. Rob Keim A period of silence shall follow the sermon.

THE NICENE CREED All stand.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

All remain standing.

Deacon With all our hearts and with all our minds let us pray to the Lord.

Intercessor: Lord, we give thanks and praise to you for giving us your church where we find love, comfort, support, and joy. We pray for places of pilgrimage and special holiness and for all who act as guides to others on their pilgrimage. We pray for spiritual mentors. May they reveal your love and saving power. (silence) God of Hope People: Fill us with joy and peace in believing.

Some point out that the Nicene Creed does not include language about love. Nor, does it depict much about the actually doings of Jesus over his thirty-three year life span.

Intercessor: We pray for leaders of nations and governments and for all in authority, that they may be wise, gentle, caring and respectful of those over whom they have authority. We pray for those struggling for peace and who are longing for hope and a new life. May they seek and be found by you. (silence) God of Hope People: Fill us with joy and peace in believing. Intercessor: We ask that we may come to know your presence and power in our lives, in our homes, and in our neighbors. We pray for our neighbors who have no safe place to lay their heads. We pray for our neighbors who struggle to pay bills, to afford medical care, and those who find their plates empty before the month has ended. We pray for shelters, soup kitchens, and other organizations who strive to provide respite for the poor and needy. May they find rest from their weariness and toil. (silence) God of Hope People: Fill us with joy and peace in believing. Intercessor: We pray for all our neighbors in hospitals and care centers; for those who are home-bound, those who feel alone. We pray for all who care for them, doctors, nurses, family, and friends. We pray for those in prison, for guards and prison officials. May they know your power of healing and most especially your promise of a time when pain, sorrow, disease, and strife will be wiped away. And especially, we pray for our community here at St. Barnabas. We pray for Carolann Williams, Alex B., Shirley Holgate, the McCaffery’s, Miss Groomes, Sandra & Dan, and Vicki. (The Intercessor then reads the petitions from the Bidding Book). May their weakness be turned to strength and confidence through your loving care. (silence) God of Hope People: Fill us with joy and peace in believing. Intercessor: We give thanks for all who have come to their journey's end on earth. For the repose of the soul of Norm Burdick. May they find rest and peace and life in you. (silence) God of Hope People: Fill us with joy and peace in believing. Silence. The Deacon adds a concluding Collect.

THE PEACE All stand.

Celebrant The peace of Christ be always with you.

People And also with you.

Then the Ministers and the People may greet one another in the name of the Lord.

The Holy Communion

OFFERTORY SENTENCE The Celebrant says

Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself for us, an offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:2

OFFERTORY ANTHEM 8 am Jesus Call Us O'er the tumult! William Jude arr. John Johnson 10 am A Song to the Lamb (Canticle 18, BCP) Setting: Calvin Hampton

(1938-1984) Splendor and honor and kingly power are yours by right, O Lord our God.

For you created everything that is, and by your will they were created and have their being; And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain, for with your blood you have redeemed for God,

from every family, language, people, and nation, a kingdom of priests to serve our God. And so, to him who sits upon the throne, and to Christ the Lamb,

be worship and praise, dominion and splendor, for ever and for evermore.

DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host: praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

The Great Thanksgiving

The People remain standing.

In the Episcopal Church we join with many other ancient traditions and chant some of our ritual words. Some say that chanting or singing is praying twice.

Celebrant It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks, all-holy God, source of life and fountain of mercy.

You have filled us and all creation with your blessing and fed us with your constant love; you have redeemed us in Jesus Christ and knit us into one body. Through your Spirit you replenish us and call us to fullness of life.

Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing (say):

Celebrant and People

The Celebrant continues

Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation. Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus.

This version of our Eucharistic prayer is

from a supplemental Episcopal resource. It

removes all gender language from our references to God.

Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life. On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Celebrant continues

Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with Barnabas and all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN

When we triumph over evil we are overcoming fear, hatred and rejection. We are embracing hope, love and inclusion.

The Eucharistic prayer includes the story of the Last Supper, Jesus’ meal with his close followers on the night before his death. But it has echoes from long before. It was the meal of the Passover, celebrating the rescue of Israel from Egypt. Jesus gives the meal new meaning… rescue from sin for all through grace… and encourages us to remember this rescue whenever we celebrate the Holy Meal.

The Deacon says

As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

People and Celebrant

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins

as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial

and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power,

and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

The Celebrant says The Gifts of God for the People of God. All are welcomed at God's table.

The ministers receive the Sacrament in both kinds, and then immediately deliver it to the people.

The Bread and the Cup are given to the communicants with these words:

The Body (Blood) of our Lord Jesus Christ keep you in everlasting life. [Amen.]

After Communion, the Celebrant says

Let us pray.

Celebrant and People

God of abundance, you have fed us with the bread of life and cup of salvation; you have united us with Christ and one another; and you have made us one with all your people in heaven and on earth. Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen.

The Priest blesses the people, saying

Live without fear: your Creator has made you holy, has always protected you, and loves you as a mother. Go in peace to follow the good road and may God’s blessing be with you always. Amen.

CONCLUDING HYMN Because He lives
