In August of 2018 our choir of Choristers & Lay Clerks will embark on their first international singing pilgrimage. In all of the cathedrals they visit, the Choristers & Lay Clerks will be the only choir and will be responsible for all of the choral music that takes place within the liturgies they sing.

The tour will begin with the Mass International at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. There they will sing a high-form catholic mass which includes choral settings of the service music (Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei) as well as several ancient Latin chants. From there they will go to England and sing a service of choral evensong at Ely Cathedral - an ancient cathedral known for its stunning and unique architecture. Finally, they’ll sing a choral residency at St. Paul’s Cathedral London, where for four days they’ll be responsible for all of the music that happens at the cathedral. This includes four services of choral evensong as well as the Sunday morning Holy Eucharist often attended by 2,500 people.

To be eligible for the trip, choristers must maintain an attendance record of 80 percent or higher, must complete three meetings with the organist/choirmaster wherein they sing multiple pieces from the tour by themselves, and must have earned at least one Royal School of Church Musi ribbon or medal over the course of the year. The Choir of Choristers and Lay Clerks is made up of approximately 15 choristers (grades 6-12), who sing the soprano part, and nine professional adult singers who sing the alto, tenor, and bass parts. Together they sing cathedral repertoire of the highest caliber and are the only such choir in the state of North Carolina.

The Lessons & Carols offering is designated for the Choristers & Lay Clerks 2018 singing pilgrimage to Europe.

A Festival of Lessons & Carols - Tonight at 5 p.m.Join us at 5 p.m. in the Church as beloved hymns, choral music, and readings take us from Adam’s original sin in the book of Genesis, to the prophetic songs of Isaiah and people shrouded in darkness, and finally ushers us into the resplendent mystery of Christ’s incarnation through the Gospel of Matthew.

“Episcopally Speaking” A closer look at the language and movements of the Episcopal Liturgy.

Lessons and Carols illuminates the prophecy and birth of Christ through scripture and song. The purpose of the service is not to celebrate Christmas, but to expect it. The progression of the choir, starting in darkness at the back of the church and ending in brilliant light at the High Altar, symbolizes the movement from the prophetic expectation of Messiah to the very brink of messianic fulfillment, both in the birth of the Son of God and his second coming. Not knowing the hour or day we are invited to awake and to watch, to prepare and to expect.

Sacred Music on the Square

The Bach Festival: The Christmas OratorioBach’s Christmas Oratorio is one of the greatest sacred choral works ever written. Similar in size and scale (though far surpassing in symbolism and complexity) to the Messiah, it is composed of six large cantatas written for the period between Christmas Day and the feast of Epiphany, Each cantata makes use of a dfferent set of instruments, giving the work great color and diversity of sound. Due to its length, technical difficulty and broad instrumentation, The Christmas Oratorio is rarely performed in its entirety, so don’t miss your chance to experience this great work. Cantatas 1-3 will be performed on Friday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m., and Cantatas 4-6 will be performed on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 3 p.m. For more information, or to purchase tickets, please visit https://ccral.org/worship/concert-series.
