Rally Day

Mark your calendars - Sunday, September 14th is Rally Day! Join us from 9:30 a.m. - 11 a.m. as we kick off our Sunday morning activities once again. It’s an opportunity for fellowship with our whole church family and a whole lot of fun inside the building and out. We’ll also serve a delicious breakfast and give everyone an opportunity to meet their Sunday School Teachers. Sunday School starts the following week at 9:30 am!

Detroit 2015 Youth GatheringHigh School Students

July 15-19, 2015 is the ELCA Youth Gathering in Detroit, Michigan! The Gathering is a five-day event where young people rotate through a variety of service learning experiences in the surrounding community. They explore and strengthen their faith by studying God’s word, serving their neighbor, sharing bread and wine in worship, participating in lively faith discussions and broadening their experience of God’s world and diverse communities through travel.

Anybody entering 9-12th grade, or just graduating from high school is invited to attend. Many of you have already expressed interest at an informational meeting earlier this year, and now the time has come to start making firm commitments. We estimate the cost to attend the Gathering to be pretty high - somewhere between $850 and $1000. That’s more than I have EVER paid or asked anyone to pay for any stateside youth event. But we flat-out reject the notion that the high cost will keep any of our students from going! Through fundraising, generous sponsors in our congregation, and maybe even some financial aid from the ELCA, we will make it happen. I urge you not to make the cost a factor in your decision to send your student. Period. The early-bird deadline for churches to pay the $325/person registration fee is January 2015. If you plan to attend, all we are asking is a commitment of $150 as a deposit. This will add your name to the roster, and include you in all communications and fundraising. The remaining $175 is due before the end of 2014. If you would like to attend, but feel like the cost will be an issue, I strongly suggest you have a conversation with Pastor Jim, Tami Porras, or myself (J.T.), and we’ll work something out.

I’m looking forward to serving and learning with you in Detroit next summer!!

VBS-YES!Thanks to everybody who helped make this year’s VBS a success! This church is absolutely filled with great volunteers, and their commitment was on display once again at this year’s event. I had an absolute blast and I know my son and all the other kids did, too. Extra-special thanks to Michele Byrnes, our VBS point person, for her preparation and supervision. Rest up, everybody - next Summer is coming sooner than you think!

Worship and Music

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.”

Ecclesiastes 3:1

Fall is my favorite season! It brings back to school, cooler weather, football, and getting ready for the holidays. Growing up in the north it also meant beautiful fall colors on the trees, cider mills and hay rides. I think the changing of the seasons is one of God’s greatest creations. It is proof that there is a time and season for everything under heaven. Enjoy this fall season and take time to admire God’s handiwork in the world around us.

Yours in Christ,Tami PorrasWorship & Music Committee

Important Sundays in September:

September 14th – Holy Cross Day- This festival day provides the church an

opportunity to lift up the victory of the cross with a spirit of celebration!

September 21st – Commemoration of St. Matthew- Matthew was a tax collector and therefore

an outcast, but loved by Jesus. His name means “gift of the Lord.” The first gospel is attributed to him.

Council Corner

Council members received an update on the service projects for God’s Work. Our Hands on September 6 and 7. Our members have stepped up as they always do!! There are many people signed up for the various activities: gardening, building teddy bears, making pillowcases / blankets, making cookies, and decorating wheelchairs and cookies at the nursing home.

Business included:

• Accepting a bid for painting both outside and inside the church. We expect this regular maintenance to begin soon.

• Receiving an Audit Report submitted by Pat Welborn, Mickey Walters and Cheryl Skillman.

• Reviewing a report from the Family Aid Ministry with an update of how many people are being helped by this ministry. Many volunteers are making themselves available to assist in a variety of different ways.

• More discussion on a pictorial directory and our picture board; we will be looking for volunteers to head up this project.

Please remember council members in your prayers as we do the work of Christ the Servant!

Choirs Rehearsals Resume

The Christ the Servant choirs (early service, late service, and tone chime) always welcome new members. The early service choir meets at 7:15, the tone chimes meet immediately after the early service, and the late service choir meets at 9:45, all in the choir room. The late service choir sings nearly every Sunday from August 24 to Trinity Sunday; the early service choir sings about every three weeks and combines with the late service choir for important festivals and special events, and the tone chime choir plays on Easter and four other times during the season. No experience or great music reading skill is necessary - we provide that, as well as a wonderful way to sing the faith and enjoy the fellowship.

A good short-term commitment is to join the midweek service choir, which performs relatively easy anthems during the midweek services in Advent and Lent. This group meets at 6:45 (before the Wednesday services only) and is a good way to contribute to the worship life of the church without having to make a long term commitment.

The point of all these groups is to be able to sing the faith and have a good time doing so. The musical heritage of the Lutheran church is unique in its ability to teach (and learn) while singing, and any help is greatly appreciated.
