JOY MINISTRYIf you are 55 or older, please invi te your friends and join us at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 21, on the thi rd floor of the Cultural Center, for a potluck dinner and a talk by Fr. Scott Borgman, the Judicial Vicar for the Diocese of Orange, on ?The Secret of the Saints.?

There are t imes when we do not want anyone to get near us. We have a bad cold and

we tel l people to keep thei r distance so they wi l l not catch i t . We just finished a

strenuous workout or have been work ing hard at some physical task and we warn

people not to get too close as i f our perspi rat ion were toxic.

In the Scriptures, there are stories of people who warned others to keep thei r

distance. The prophet Isaiah warned some angels that he was a man of unclean l ips

(Isaiah 6:1-8). In the Gospel of Luke, after Jesus provides Peter wi th a huge catch of fish, he tel ls the Lord to

stay away because he is a sinful man (Luke 5:5-11). Isaiah and Peter thought they were unpresentable, but not

because of a bad cold or sweat. They thought they were unpresentable because of thei r sinfulness, almost as i f

they did not want God to catch what they saw as thei r ugly selves.

When Isaiah and Peter told God to stay away, an amazing thing happened. God showed them that even though

they thought they were no good, they would be instruments of God?s presence to others. To Isaiah, God sent an

angel to clean up his language and he became one of the great prophets of the Hebrew Scriptures. To Peter

who thought al l he could do was catch fish, Jesus told him that from that moment on, he would be catching

people. Isaiah and Peter show us that even i f we think we are not presentable, God sees our goodness and our

capaci ty to bring his l i fe and love to others, especial ly to those who may feel worthless.

This is our commitment weekend for the annual Diocese of Orange Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA). This appeal

financial ly supports our diocesan ministries, and in part icular this year, ministry to the youth of Christ

Cathedral Parish. These ministries are al l about helping us to know that even wi th our flaws, God sees our

goodness. It is out of this goodness that we are cal led to bring his love to others.

The PSA theme, We Are One reminds us i t is our uni ty as a Church that brings the

presence of Jesus most powerful ly to the world. Jesus is wai t ing to do some of his best

work wi th our sometimes-unpresentable selves. Thank you for your generosi ty in

helping that work to happen.

MINISTERIO JOY Si usted t iene 55 o más, por favor invi te a sus amigos y únase a nosotros en 6:30 p.m. el jueves 21 de febrero, en el tercer piso del centro cultural, para una cena de potluck y una charla del Padre Scott Borgman, Vicario Judicial de

la Diócesis de Orange, sobre "El Secreto de los Santos".

Hay ocasiones en que no queremos que nadie se nos acerque. Tenemos un fuerte

resfriado y le decimos a las personas que mantengan su distancia para que no se

contagien. Acabamos de terminar de hacer ejercicio o hemos estado trabajando

duro en algún trabajo físico y le advert imos a las personas que no se acerquen

demasiado, como si nuestra transpi ración fuera tóxica.

En las Escri turas, hay historias de personas que advi r t ieron a otros que

mantuvieran su distancia. El profeta Isaías advi r t ió a algunos ángeles que él era

un hombre de labios inmundos (Isaías 6: 1-8). En el Evangel io de Lucas, después de que Jesús le proporciona

a Pedro una gran cantidad de peces, le dice al Señor que se mantenga alejado porque es un hombre pecador

(Lucas 5: 5-11). Isaías y Pedro pensaron que no estaban presentables, pero no por un fuerte resfriado o sudor.

Pensaron que no estaban presentables debido a su pecado, casi como si no quisieran que Dios se contagiara

de lo que feo que el los veían en sí mismo.

Cuando Isaías y Pedro le di jeron a Dios que se mantuviera alejado, sucedió algo asombroso. Dios les mostró

que, aunque pensaran que no eran buenos, serían instrumentos de la presencia de Dios para los demás. A

Isaías, Dios le envió un ángel para l impiar su lenguaje y se convi r t ió en uno de los grandes profetas de las

Escri turas hebreas. A Pedro, que pensó que todo lo que podía hacer era pescar, Jesús le di jo que, a part i r de

ese momento, estaría pescando a personas. Isaías y Pedro nos muestran que cuando no nos sentimos

presentables, Dios ve nuestra bondad y nuestra capacidad para l levar su vida y su amor a los demás,

especialmente a aquel los que pueden senti rse inúti les.

Este es nuestro fin de semana de compromiso para la Apelación Anual de los Servicios Pastorales (PSA) de la

Diócesis de Orange. Este l lamado apoya financieramente a nuestros ministerios diocesanos, y en part icular

este año, el ministerio a los jóvenes de la Parroquia de la Catedral de Cristo. Estos ministerios nos ayudan a

ver que aun con nuestras fal las, Dios ve nuestra bondad. Es por esta bondad que

estamos l lamados a l levar su amor a los demás.

El tema de PSA, Somos Uno nos recuerda que es nuestra unidad como Iglesia la que

hace que la presencia de Jesús sea más poderosa para el mundo. Jesús está esperando

hacer su mejor trabajo con nuestro aun cuando no estamos presentables. Gracias por

su generosidad suceda para ayudar a que ese trabajo.
