DIY Herbal Gifts Work Book

Math Fun: Here’s the important measurements you need to know when

working with “parts”: You’ll come back to this. Note that all these measurements are approximations.

1 cup = 8 ounces = 225 ml = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons

½ cup = 4 ounces = 112 ml = 8 tablespoons = 24 teaspoon

¼ cup = 2 ounces = 56 ml = 4 tablespoons = 12 teaspoons

1 ounce = 28 ml = 2 tablespoons = 6 teaspoons

½ ounce = 14 ml = 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons

How much essential oil do you need? To figure out how many drops 2% essential oil is you need to know that:

20 drops of essential oil = 1ml

100 drops of essential oil = 5 ml = 1 teaspoon

1 Tablespoon = 3 teaspoons = 15 ml

3 Tablespoons = 45 ml

2 % of 45 ml = .9 ml = 18 drops

Measuring Beeswax by weight

192 grams of beeswax is equal to 1 cup

96 grams of beeswax is equal to ½ cup

12 grams of beeswax is equal to 1 tablespoon of melted beeswax.

4 grams of beeswax is equal to 1 teaspoon of beeswax.

Master Recipes

Lotion Bar Master recipe Time: 20 minutes plus cooling time

Use this master recipe as the basis for lip balms, lotion bars, and other richly moisturizing gifts. This

recipe contains a 2% essential oil dilution or about 1 teaspoon of total essential oil.

1 part beeswax

1 part cocoa butter

1 part herb infused olive oil

2% essential oil

Directions:

Make a double boiler using a glass measuring cup and a saucepan.

Place the beeswax, cocoa butter, and herb infused oil in the glass measuring cup. Place the measuring

cup in the saucepan. Fill the saucepan with water half way up the side of the measuring cup.

Place the saucepan with water over medium heat. Simmer until the beeswax is melted. Remove from

the heat.

Add the essential oil to the mixture in the measuring cup. Stir to combine.

Pour into prepared silicone molds or tubes. Cool completely. Package. Label.

Salve Master Recipe 20 to 30 minutes

A salve is similar to a lotion bar but without the butter. Salve recipes are customized based on the

ambient temperatures in your area. If you live where the ambient temperature is high, you will use

more beeswax to keep the salve solid. If you live where air conditioning or colder temperatures are the

norm you’ll want to use less beeswax.

Time 15 minutes plus cooling time

Salve for warmer areas 6 parts herb infused oil

1 part beeswax

2 % essential oil (optional)

Salve for colder areas 7 parts herb infused oil

1 part beeswax

2% essential oil

Follow the directions for the lotion bar, when making salve-type recipes.

Sugar or Salt Scrub Master Recipe Time 10 minutes

2 parts sugar or salt

1 part herb infused oil

2 % essential oil (use the oil measure to determine the 2% ratio)

Mix all the ingredients into a small bowl. Transfer into a jar. Add instructions. Label

Bath Bomb Master Recipe Time: 45 minutes plus overnight drying time

4 parts baking soda

2 parts citric acid

¼ part herb infused oil

2 % essential oil

¼ part powdered herbs

¼ part starch or clay

Rubbing Alcohol in a spray bottle

¼ part chopped herbs for decoration

2% essential oils (based on oil portion)

To increase the fizziness of a bath bomb recipe the citric acid portion can be increased to 3 parts

in this master recipe. But this should only be done after you have mastered the bath bomb

technique. Increasing the citric acid can make the bath bombs more volatile, especially if your

relative humidity is high.

Bath Crush Master Recipe Time 10 minutes

Another master recipe this time for a bath crush. A bath crush is like a bath bomb but it contains Epsom

salts or Dead Sea Salts which are challenging to incorporate into bath bombs since they attract moisture

from the air.

You could also make a bath crush by crushing the bath bombs that fizz when you are making them. But

this recipe is just mixing the ingredients up.

2 parts baking soda

1 ½ parts citric acid

2 parts Epsom salts or dead sea salts.

1 part herb infused oil

¼ part clay

¼ part powdered starch

2 % essential oils (based on oil portion)

2 % liquid castile soap

In this recipe all ingredients are simply added to a bowl, mixed together and then packaged. Use ½ cup

per bath.

Bath Salt Master Recipe Time: 10 minutes

4 parts Dead Sea Salt or Epsom salts

1 part herb infused oil

½ part powdered herbs

2% essential oil (based on oil portion)

1% liquid castile soap

Lip Product Recipes

Lip scrub recipe 2 tablespoon calendula infused olive oil

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon beeswax

10 drops peppermint essential oil

1 teaspoon lip safe raspberry mica colorant (optional)

Lip Plumper In this recipe cinnamon works as a circulation stimulant and skin irritant to open capillaries in the lips

and make them appear fuller. We will only use a tiny amount of cinnamon essential oil so as not to

irritate the tender skin on the lips.

2 tablespoon cinnamon infused olive oil

1 teaspoon beeswax

2 drops cinnamon essential oil

Lip Gloss or colored lip gloss 1 tablespoon calendula infused oil

2 ½ teaspoons rose hip seed oil

½ teaspoon castor oil

1 teaspoon beeswax

10 drops peppermint essential oil

1 teaspoon merlot mica (lip safe colorant)

Hint: when using mica colorant with lip products ensure that the mica colorant is lip safe. To get a more

opaque color use ¼ teaspoon titanium dioxide per recipe. Zinc oxide can also be used in place of

titanium dioxide.

Using the Lotion Bar Master recipe we are going to make a lip stick for this gift basket:

Packaging Considerations Packaging must be clean and sanitized

It must be sized to the product

It must be appropriate to the product

Glass is best

o glass is nonreactive

o glass can be sanitized, recycled, reused

o glass is decorative

o many sizes and colors available

o tinctures, vinegars , syrup, oxymels, and infused oils are best when packaged in colored

bottles to protect the contents from light.

o Mason jars can be used with appropriate lids

Many packaging options are available on Amazon, Brambleberry, Mountain Rose, and SKS

bottles for products like lip balms, lip sticks, salves. and balms.

I recommend packaging in 1 and 2 ounce containers for salves and balms to prevent contamination of

the product by the fingers, and extend shelf life. A larger container takes longer to use up and is more

prone to spoilage.

Common Allergens to Avoid in DIY Herbal Gifting Avoid using any of these ingredients if the person you are crafting for has an allergy

Wheat or gluten – including wheat germ oil, barley malt, grain alcohol,

Eggs

Tree Nuts (argan oil, almond oil, shea butter)

What should be included on the label

Name of the product, even a silly name

How to use the product

What the dose is , if any

Ingredients or allergy alerts, like “contains tree nuts”. (important)
