Summer Cover: Roman ChamomileAnthemis nobilis LAlso commonly known as English chamomile, this plant is a low growing perennial which contains an apple-like scented flower which is used to produce the essential oil. It was once looked upon as the ‘Plant’s Physician’, stating that if planted, it contributed significantly to the health of your garden. Many aromatherapists believe that the essential oil is beneficial for the treatment of muscular aches and pains, arthritis, rheumatism, menstrual conditions, stress, nervous tension, anxiety and sleeplessness. It may also be beneficial for skin care and can help to treat mild acne, allergies, and minor wounds. Certified Organic or Conventional Roman Chamomile essential oils are available to purchase now.

Many of us who favour natural ingredients love the work that bees do, and whilst honey may be their most popular commodity, they also produce the very beneficial beeswax. Its thickening and conditioning

properties make it perfect for use in cosmetics and skin care products...

Beehives: each hive contains a series of frames that bees use to build their honeycomb. Frames, full of wax & honey are replaced with a clean empty one to keep the cycle going.

HONEY BEES OR GENUS APIS are some of the world’s hardest working creatures. Worker bees account for approximately 99% of a colony’s population and during their tireless six-week lifespan they are busy, busy, busy.

One of the many products they create is

natural wax. The workers eat fresh honey

and after approximately 24 hours their special

glands convert the honey’s natural sugar into

beeswax. This wax is excreted in liquid form

from glands on the bee’s abdomen. As soon

as this liquid makes contact with air it

solidifies into flakes. The bee then chews,

softens and moulds the wax into honeycomb.

One single kilo of beeswax requires

approximately 7kg of ingested honey.

Above: Certified Organic Australian Beeswax. Natural cosmetics use beeswax as a thickener, humectant and skin protective ingredient.

Left: Honeycomb Laden Frame Bees build wax into perfectly shaped hexagonal combs. The honeycomb serves several purposes including housing new eggs as they develop into bees and also for the storage of honey.

Sydney Essential Oil Co.’s certified organic beeswax producer harvests from 5,000 licensed hives located in 700 unique locations. Global positioning satellite (GPS) systems are used to keep track of hive sites that are situated throughout northern New South Wales in areas such as Dubbo, Nabiac, Tottenham and Hungerford on the QLD border.

As bees are naturally attracted to their closest food source, beekeepers control the locations of

the hives therefore influencing the species from which the bees collect their pollen and nectar. In

this case, Stringy Bark, Yellow Box, Red Gum and Blue Gum Eucalyptus trees guarantee a rich

pollen and nectar supply throughout the season and the hive sites are rotated to work in with

the staggered flower patterns of the different varieties. This mobile harvesting continues for ten

months of the year from spring until the weather turns colder in winter.

To optimise honey and wax production, commercial harvesting’s delicate operation ensures the

correct balance between the number of hives and their strategic placement near plentiful

supplies of flowering fragrant trees.

Above Top: Liquid wax is washed in boiling water to remove any dust, debris or dirt.

Above Below: Beeswax is poured into moulds to set ready for quality assessment. When the cleaning cycle is complete, wax blocks go into storage until sold.

Honeycomb laden frames are removed from the hives and transported to the factory where the comb is cut away using a thin metal wire. The waxy combs are transferred to large tanks where they are gently heated to first extract the honey.

Once the honey has been removed the

remaining wax is then thoroughly cleaned by

dropping it into boiling water. After the

water evaporates, the clean liquid wax is

poured into moulds. When set, the wax is

de-moulded and assessed. This washing

process may occur multiple times depending

on the cleanliness of the wax and the grade

of wax being produced.

Sydney Essential Oil Co.’s supply partner

produces around 10-12 tonnes of wax

annually. They are fully certified by

Australian Certified Organic (ACO) and all

their sites are inspected regularly to ensure

the highest standards are maintained.

Our Certified Organic Australian Beeswax is rich in colour and a honey-aroma provides an extra

dimension to your formulations. In cosmetics, beeswax is a highly valuable ingredient that can

offer protective and humectant properties, which may soothe and soften the effects of dry skin.

It is an excellent addition to your natural and organic balms, body butters and creams.

Certified Organic unrefined Australian Beeswax is available in 1kg or 5kg sizes. To place an order or request a quote, contact our sales team at [email protected] or call 02 9565 2828.

Harvesting THE FENNEL PLANT is a tall 2-metre yellow flowering, highly aromatic and flavourful perennial herb, which requires approximately 100 days to mature before harvesting can occur.

Experts claims that the exact time to harvest the plant can be difficult to judge given the thick leafy stalk can continue to grow until flowering occurs.

Sweet Fennel oil comes from crushed fennel seeds (Foeniculum vulgare). Upon harvesting, seeds are fully ripened, and are then left to dry for 3-4 days. These dried seeds are then crushed to release the essential oil and loaded into the still to prevent any loss by evaporation.

Steam distillation yields a pale straw-coloured essential oil with a sweet, spicy, slightly aniseed-like aroma with earthy back notes, which is reminiscent of liquorice.

HistoryFennel has been used by many different ancient civilizations.

The Chinese used fennel as a remedy for snake bites and scorpion stings, and medicinally to help treat abdominal pain, colic, and stomach chills. The Greeks are said to have been the first to discover this herb’s ability to aid in weight loss and even named it ‘marathon’ from the Latin ‘maraino’ meaning to ‘grow thin’. During the middle ages, fennel was hung over doorways and stuffed into keyholes to protect the house from evil spirits.

Egyptians used the powerful herb as medicine for stomach aches and indigestion, and Roman soldiers used fennel to help them to stave off hunger pangs whilst on long marches.

Why not try incorporating SEOC’s Certified Organic Sweet Fennel Oil into your own skincare routine?

BenefitsThis versatile essential oil is said to help ease digestion, bloating and may even be beneficial in easing dizziness, fatigue and exhaustion.

To help restore mental alertness, try adding a few drops to a diffuser or alternatively try blending a small amount of the oil with either Citronella, Geranium, Grapefruit, Lavender, Lemon, Orange, Rose and/or Sandalwood. Unfortunately, adulterating and the extending of essential oils has become common practice in the essential oil and aromatherapy industries, yet few consumers are aware of this practice. Only 100% pure, natural authentic essential oils should be employed for use in aromatherapy. When an essential oil is adulterated its naturally occurring constituents and synergistic components destroy the essential oil’s therapeutic benefits. Australian Botanical Products is the only company in Australia with the technology and ability to analyse and validate each essential oil on the premises. We are able to do this by conducting Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) testing and analysis, as well as a number of vitally important subjective tests listed below.

The quality subjective tests SEOC / ABP apply to essential oils are:

Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS)A method that combines the features of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry to simultaneously separate and identify different components within an essential oil or fragrance.

Refractive Index (RI)An instrument used for measuring the deviation of light as it passes through a given substance, given as the ratio of its velocity in a vacuum to its velocity within the substance.

Optical Rotation (OR)Equipment used for determining the turning of the plane of linearly polarised light about the direction of motion, as the light travels through certain substances. Optical rotation is considered to be positive e(+) for dextrorotatory substances (i.e. those that rotate the plane of polarisation in a clockwise direction) and negative (-) for laevorotatory substances.

Specific Gravity (SG)Equipment used for measuring the ratio of the density (mass of unit volume) of a substance to the density of (mass of the same unit volume) of a reference substance.
