JOHN REGAFinancial Services Editor, POLITICO Europe

John Rega is Financial Services Editor at POLITICO Europe. He has reported on European financial services and other policy matters from Brussels since 2003, first with Bloomberg and then with MLex, where he was chief correspondent for financial services.

Before moving to Brussels, Mr Rega covered financial regulation, taxation, corporate news and market developments in Washington DC for Bloomberg (1997-2003) and the Bureau of National Affairs (1995-1997).

A native of Massachusetts, he earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism in 1995 from The George Washington University, in DC.

MÁRIAM MARTÍNEZ-BASCUÑÁNOpinion editor, El País

Máriam Martínez-Bascuñán is the El País opinion editor and a Professor of Political Science at the Universidad Autónoma in Madrid.

Ms Martínez-Bascuñán has been a research fellow at the University of Chicago, as well as at Columbia Institute and Institut d’Études Politiques in Paris (Sciences Po). She studied political science, obtaining her Diplôme du Programme International at Sciences Po and was a recipient of a PhD fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science.

Her academic research has concentrated on immigration politics, deliberative democracy and populism. Her main publications include On Immigration Politics in The Context of European Societies and The Structural Inequality Model (2009); Misgivings on Deliberative Democracy: Revisiting the Deliberative Framework (2016) and Populismos, co-authored with Fernando Vallespín (2016).

MANUEL MUÑIZDean of IE School of Global and Public Affairs and Rafael del Pino Professor of Practice of Global Transformation

Manuel Muñiz is the Dean of the School of Global and Public Affairs at IE University and Rafael del Pino Professor of Practice of Global Transformation. He is also the Founding Director of IE’s Center for the Governance of Change.

From 2015 to 2017, Dr Muñiz was the Director of the program on Transatlantic Relations at Harvard University’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs. Since 2017, he has been a Senior Associate at Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs as well as one of the promoters of its Project on Europe and the Transatlantic Relationship.

Throughout his career, he has provided policy advice to governments and international organizations. He has also published opinion pieces and has been interviewed by publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post and Project Syndicate.

Dr Muñiz holds a JD (Law) from the Complutense University in Madrid, an MSc in Financial Markets from the IEB, a Master in Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government, and a DPhil (PhD) in International Relations from the University of Oxford.

In 2016, he was recognised by Esglobal as one of the 25 intellectuals with the greatest impact on our thinking about Latin America.

SARAH DURIEUXExecutive Director France, Change.org

Sarah Durieux is the Executive Director, France for Change.org, the world’s largest online petitions platform.

Ms Durieux participated in the launch of Change.org in France in 2012. Since then, the platform has seen major social mobilisation emerge through citizen campaigns, such as the mobilisation against labour law reform in 2016, and the ‘yellow vest’ movement most recently. She meets every day policy makers and media to bring the voices of Change.org users into public debate.

Prior to Change.org, Ms Durieux worked for various NGOs such as the WWF and SOS Children’s Villages and she helped develop the digital business unit of a communication agency.

She studied political communication at the University of Paris XII and she is an active contributor to French debates around public participation and people-powered movements for social change.

MARCO BUTIDirector-General for Economic and Financial Affairs, European Commission

Marco Buti has been Director-General for Economic and Financial Affairs at the European Commission since December 2008. He is the Commission Finance Deputy at the G7 and G20.

After completing his studies at the University of Florence and the University of Oxford, Mr Buti joined the European Commission in 1987. He held various positions in the Commission, including that of economic advisor of the Commission President.

Mr Buti has been a visiting professor at the Université libre de Bruxelles, the University of Florence and the European University Institute. He has published extensively on the economic and monetary union, macroeconomic policies, structural reforms, the welfare state, and unemployment.

SIR CHRISTOPHER PISSARIDESProfessor of Economics and Political Science, London School of Economics, Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences

Sir Christopher Pissarides holds the Regius Chair of Economics at the London School of Economics and the Chair of European Studies at the University of Cyprus. He specialises in the economics of labour markets, and economic growth and structural change, particularly as they relate to market frictions, where his work has been especially influential.

In the last decade, he has worked extensively on the employment implications of automation and artificial intelligence and on the emergence of China as a global economic power. He has written extensively in professional journals, magazines and the press. His book, Equilibrium Unemployment Theory, is an influential reference in the economics of unemployment and it has been translated into many languages.

Sir Christopher Pissarides was awarded the 2010 Nobel Prize in Economics, jointly with Dale Mortensen of Northwestern University and Peter Diamond of MIT. He also received the 2005 IZA Prize in Labor Economics, again with Dale Mortensen, and several other awards, prizes and society fellowships, connected with his work on labour markets. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2013.

STEFANIE STANTCHEVAProfessor of Economics, Harvard University

Stefanie Stantcheva is professor of Economics at Harvard University and member of the French Council of Economic Advisers.

Her research focuses on how to improve the tax and transfer system for firms and individuals. She combines theory and empirical methods to study the effects of taxes and transfers on economic outcomes, as well as how to incorporate these effects into our tax models. As part of her research, she also conducts large-scale online surveys and experiments to examine determinants of social preferences, attitudes, and perceptions that drive support for wealth redistribution.

Professor Stantcheva is an associate editor at various specialised academic journals, such as the American Economic Review, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, and the Journal of Political Economy, and she is foreign editor at the Review of Economic Studies.

She was a junior fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows between 2014 and 2016, and she received her Ph.D. in Economics from MIT in 2014.

She has been by recognised by The Economist last year as one of the decade’s eight best young economists.

She also recently received the “Best Young economist Award” from Le Monde and Le Cercle des Économistes.

ARANCHA GONZÁLEZExecutive Director, International Trade Centre

An expert in international trade issues with 20 years of experience, Ms González has served as Executive Director of the International Trade Centre (ITC) since September 2013. She also co-chairs the World Economic Forum Agenda Council on the Future of Trade and Investment.

Before joining ITC, Ms González was Chief of Staff to World Trade Organization Director-General Pascal Lamy from 2005 to 2013. During her tenure at the WTO, she played an active role in launching the Aid for Trade initiative and served as Mr Lamy’s representative (Sherpa) at the G20.

Prior to working at the WTO, Ms González held several positions at the European Commission, negotiating trade agreements and assisting developing countries in trade development efforts.

Ms González began her career in the private sector as an associate at a German law firm advising companies on trade, competition and state-aid matters.

She holds a degree in law from the University of Navarra and a postgraduate degree in European law from the University of Carlos III, Madrid.

SASHA VAKULINABusiness Editor, Euronews

Sasha Vakulina is Euronews’ Business Editor, in charge of the channel’s overall global business affairs coverage. As a daily contributor to Euronews’ live news programmes, she provides analysis and insight into the world’s major headline stories and global business trends.

She is also the channel’s representative at various international business and political events, such as the World Economic Forum in Davos and the World Mobile Congress in Barcelona.

HANNEKE FABERPresident, Foods & Refreshment, Unilever

Hanneke Faber is President, Foods & Refreshment at Unilever, and a member of the Unilever Executive Committee. She also serves as a member of the Supervisory Board of Bayer AG, the German life sciences company and is on the Advisory Board of Leading Executives Advancing Diversity (LEAD).

Since joining Unilever in January 2018 as President of Europe, Ms Faber has focused on growing and modernising the company’s European operations through innovation and acquisitions and on the end-to-end digital transformation of the business, embracing the company’s motto of ‘making sustainable living commonplace’.

Prior to joining Unilever, Ms Faber was Chief E-commerce & Innovation Officer and a member of the Executive Committee at global retailer Ahold Delhaize, from 2013 to 2017. Previously, she was Vice-President and Global General Manager for Pantene, Head & Shoulders, and Herbal Essences at Procter & Gamble, where she started her career in 1992.

A seven-time Dutch national springboard diving champion, she attended the University of Houston (Texas, USA) on an athletic scholarship and graduated summa cum laude with a BA in journalism and an MBA.

HELENA NORBERG-HODGEFounder and Director, Local Futures and The International Alliance for Localization (IAL)

Helena Norberg-Hodge is a pioneer of the local economy movement and has been promoting an economics of personal, social and ecological well-being for nearly four decades. She is a widely respected analyst of the impact of the global economy on culture, agriculture and personal identity.

She has written numerous articles, essays and book chapters, including the ‘inspirational classic’, Ancient Futures. She is the co-author of two groundbreaking books on food and farming: Bringing the Food Economy Home and From the Ground Up: Rethinking Industrial Agriculture. She is also producer and co-director of the award-winning documentary The Economics of Happiness.

Ms Norberg-Hodge is a recipient of the Alternative Nobel prize, the Arthur Morgan Award, and the Goi Peace Prize for contributing to ‘the revitalization of cultural and biological diversity, and the strengthening of local communities and economies worldwide’.

Educated in Sweden, Germany, Austria, England and the United States, Helena specialised in linguistics, with degrees from the University of London and MIT.

She was named among the among the world’s ‘10 most interesting environmentalists’ by The Earth Journal, and also mentioned as one of the ‘8 visionaries changing the world’ in Carl McDaniel’s book Wisdom for a Liveable Planet.

Maithreyi Seetharaman is a London-based international political-economics and business journalist with over 18 years’ of global experience. She is currently Director of Fortune Magazine’s Live Media Content and Co-Chair of Fortune Most Powerful Women International, Fortune Global Forum and Brainstorm Design. Additionally, she is an Advisory Board Member of Docusign.

Previously, Ms Seetharaman created and hosted as anchor and executive editor Euronews’ economic show, Real Economy, for five seasons. Prior to this, she co-hosted CNBC Europe’s Squawk Box Europe and Capital Connection. She has also been and anchor and stocks editor for Bloomberg Television in London and New York. Before joining Bloomberg, she was a prime time anchor for CNBC TV18 in India and a reporter for the Indian national financial daily The Financial Express.

Ms Seetharaman holds a master’s in international relations from the Maxwell School of Citizenship at Syracuse University, New York, and a master’s in journalism from Bond University, Australia.

GUY STANDINGProfessorial Research Associate at SOAS, University of London

Guy Standing is a labour economist and Professorial Research Associate at School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) of the University of London. He is also a founder and Honorary Co-President of the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN), an international NGO promoting basic income as a right.

Professor Standing previously held chairs at SOAS and the universities of Bath (UK) and Monash (Australia). These followed a long career at the International Labour Organization where he was Director of its Socio-Economic Security Programme and, earlier, of its Labour Market Policies Branch.

He holds a PhD in economics from the University of Cambridge and a master’s degree in industrial relations from the University of Illinois.

Since the publication of his landmark book, The Precariat: The New Dangerous Class (2011, third edition 2016), which has been translated into 22 languages, Professor Standing has made outstanding contributions to the literature on labour economics, rentier capitalism and the precariat. His most recent books include Basic Income: And How We Can Make It Happen (2017); The Corruption of Capitalism: Why Rentiers Thrive and Work Does Not Pay (2016); and A Precariat Charter: From Denizens to Citizens (2014).

HILMAR SCHNEIDERProfessor and Chief Executive Officer, Institute of Labour Economics (IZA)

Hilmar Schneider is CEO of the Institute of Labour Economics (IZA) in Bonn and Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance at the University of Luxembourg.

Between 2013 and 2016, he was CEO of the Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research after having served 12 years at IZA as Director of Labour Policy. He has also been active as a member of various advisory boards of the German government.

Besides labour policy, Mr Schneider’s main research emphases comprise problems of social protection, wage policy and demography. His most important publications include papers on the labour market effects of replacement wages.

PIERRE MOSCOVICICommissioner, European Commission

Pierre Moscovici has been European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs since November 2014.

Prior to this, Mr Moscovici was France’s Minister for Economy and Finance from May 2012 until April 2014. Between 2007 and 2014, he was a member of the French National Assembly from the Doubs constituency, where he was re-elected in 2014. From 1998 to 2004, he was a member of the Franche-Comté Regional Council, and served as Minister-delegate for European Affairs between 1997 and 2002. That same year, he served also as representative of the French authorities at the Convention on the Future of Europe.

Mr Moscovici was twice Vice-President and member of the European Parliament, in 1994-1997 and 2004-2007. He started his public career in 1984 as a member of the Cour des Comptes, the French Court of Audit.

Born in 1957, Mr Moscovici holds a master’s degree in economics and political science and a postgraduate degree in economics and philosophy. He is also a graduate of the École Nationale d’Administration.

DEIRDRE MORTELLCEO, Social Innovation Fund Ireland

Deirdre Mortell is CEO of Social Innovation Fund Ireland, a charity created by the Irish Government to stimulate philanthropy and back the best social innova-tions in Ireland. In three years, SIFI has created a €30 million Fund, which has backed 86 social innovations. Ms Mortell is also a founding board member of Women for Election, a non-profit which inspires, equips and informs women to run for political office.

For 10 years, as Co-Founder & CEO of The One Foundation, Ms Mortell led this groundbreaking Irish grant-making foundation to support high potential non-profit organisations in Ireland and Vietnam to deliver their goals, stewarding €85 million in social impact, using the tools and methodologies of venture capital. During this time, she also launched Jigsaw and Social Entrepreneurs Ireland.

Prior to this, Ms Mortell was director of fundraising, communications and advocacy at Barnardos for six years and head of fundraising for Oxfam Ireland.

She has held numerous board memberships, including European Venture Philanthropy Association, Women for Election, Barnardos, Uplift – People Powered Change, and Chair of Jigsaw.

CHRISTOPHE CATOIRCEO France - Head of Northern Europe, The Adecco Group

Christophe Catoir joined The Adecco Group in France in 1995, immediately after his studies at the IESEG School of Management. Over the past 20 years, his career has progressed through various positions of responsibility. Initially internal auditor, then administrative and finan-cial manager, he was appointed in 1999 as regional director for Adecco France (Lorraine region).

In 2005, he took responsibility for all permanent recruitment activities. He supported the launch of Experts, a brand dedicated to the recruitment of middle management executives, engineers and technicians (since renamed Spring), in order to reinforce the group’s position on this market. In 2009, he was appointed Ope-rational General Director of Adecco France (South-East region) and managed a network of 350 branches and 1300 employees. He also leads the sales and marketing activities for Adecco France.

In 2012, Mr Catoir was appointed head of global profes-sional staffing activities in France: 8 brands, 3,200 em-ployees focused on executive recruitment, outsourcing and consulting. In September 2015, he was appointed Regional Head of France and member of the Executive Committee. In February 2019, he was appointed as Regional Head of France and Northern Region.

LUCA VISENTINIGeneral Secretary, European Trade Union Confederation

Luca Visentini became ETUC General Secretary at the Confederation’s 13th Congress in Paris in 2015, after four years serving as ETUC Confederal Secretary in Brussels. He joined the ETUC in 1997.

In his current role, Mr Visentini is responsible for guiding and coordinating ETUC policy. He has been involved in negotiations at European Union level on the European Pillar of Social Rights, the future of Europe, relaunching European social dialogue, public investment, economic governance and many other issues of importance to European workers.

As part of his duties, he attends meetings with EU and national leaders and social partner organisations, and represents the Confederation in international and European fora and at affiliates’ conferences. He also has a role in budget supervision, as well as keeping ETUC staff informed of European policy developments affecting trade unions.

Luca Visentini has been active in the trade union movement since 1989, gathering experience in collective bargaining at confederations, both at national and sec-toral level. Before joining ETUC, he worked at the Italian national trade union centre, Unione Italiana del Lavoro, as General Secretary for one of the twenty Italian regions and as a member of the centre’s steering committee.

MARIA TADEOReporter, Bloomberg

Maria Tadeo is a Brussels-based reporter for Bloomberg television, where she reports on the euro zone and Brexit. Previously, Maria was based in Bloomberg’s London headquarters, covering markets as well as European economic data.

Maria graduated from City University London where she received a Master’s in financial journalism. She was awarded a Banco Santander scholarship for her studies.

VALDIS DOMBROVSKISVice-President, European Commission

Valdis Dombrovskis has been Vice-President of the European Commission for the Euro and Social Dialogue, also in charge of Financial Stability, Financial Services and the Capital Markets Union since November 2014.A former Latvian MP and MEP, Mr Dombrovskis served three consecutive terms as Prime Minister of Latvia (from February 2009 until the end of 2013), becoming the longest serving elected head of government in Latvia’s history.

He was previously a senior economist and Chief Economist at the Bank of Latvia (1998-2002), Minister of Finance (2002-2004), Observer at the Council of the European Union (2003-2004) and a Member of the European Parliament (2004-2009).

Born in 1971, Mr Dombrovskis graduated with a degree in physics from the University of Latvia (1993) and economics from Riga University of Technology (1995). He received his master’s degree in physics in 1995 from the University of Latvia.

He is the author of several books and scientific publications. In November 2014, Valdis Dombrovskis was awarded the Order of the Three Stars (Triju Zvaigžņu ordenis), the highest state decoration of the Republic of Latvia.

GITA GOPINATHChief Economist, International Monetary Fund

Gita Gopinath is the Economic Counsellor and Director of the Research Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She is on leave of public service from Harvard University’s Economics department.

Ms Gopinath is the co-editor of the current Handbook of International Economics and was earlier the co-editor of the American Economic Review and managing editor of The Review of Economic Studies. She has also previously served as the co-director of the International Finance and Macroeconomics program at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER), as a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, and as a member of the economic advisory panel of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. From 2016-2018, she was the Economic Adviser to the Chief Minister of Kerala State in India. She also served as a member of the Eminent Persons Advisory Group on G20 Matters for India’s Ministry of Finance.

Ms Gopinath received her PhD in economics from Princeton University in 2001 after earning a B.A. from Lady Shri Ram College and M.A. degrees from Delhi School of Economics and University of Washington.

In 2019, Foreign Policy named her one of the Top Global Thinkers. In 2014, she was named one of the top 25 economists under 45 by the IMF, and in 2011 she was chosen a Young Global Leader (YGL) by the World Economic Forum. The Indian government awarded her the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, the highest honour conferred on overseas Indians.

RICCARDO ILLYChairman, Gruppo Illy

Riccardo Illy is the Chairman of Gruppo Illy, the corporation behind brands such as Illycaffè, Domori, Mastrojanni, and Dammann Frères. He has been with the company since 1977.

Mr Illy’s career extends beyond business into politics, teaching, and writing. After serving as mayor of the city of Trieste, Mr Illy was elected MP in the Italian Parliament in 2001. He has also taught at the faculty of communication sciences at Trieste University, and is a member of the IEDC – Bled School of Management Supervisory Board. Mr. Illy is also a journalist and author.

From 2004 to 2008, Mr Illy served as President of the Assembly of the European Regions and was President of the autonomous Region Friuli-Venezia Giulia between 2003 and 2008.

Mr Illy received the prestigious title of Honoris Causa in Political Sciences and has been awarded several official distinctions such as the title of “Grande Ufficiale” by the President of the Italian Republic and the “Golden Honorary Title” by the President of the Republic of Austria.

NADIA CALVIÑO Minister of Economy and Business, Spain

Nadia Calviño was appointed Spain’s Minister of Economy and Business in June 2018. Between 2014 and 2018, she was Director-General in the Directorate-General for Budget of the European Commission.Previously, Ms Calviño held two senior management positions in the European Commission: as Deputy Director-General with a special responsibility for Financial Regulation, and as Deputy Director-General in the Directorate-General for Competition with a focus on Mergers and Antitrust (including cartels).

Before joining the European Commission in September 2006, she was a career civil servant in Spain (Técnico Comercial y Economista del Estado), where she worked in the Ministry of Economy. She held different management positions in the areas of macroeconomic analysis and forecasting, foreign trade, economic policy and competition. Senior roles included Director-General for Competition, Deputy Director-General for Legal Affairs, and Deputy Director-General for Mergers.

An economist and a lawyer by training, she has also worked as a teacher of Economic Policy and Financial Systems in the Spanish University (Universidad Complutense de Madrid).

Her performance has been recognised with different awards: 2012 Women Leader (Aliter Business School), 2007 Public Sector Lawyer of the Year (Iberian Lawyer magazine) and the Commendation of the Order of Civil Merit in 2015, awarded by HM King Philip VI.

TIM JACKSONProfessor of Sustainable Development, University of Surrey

Tim Jackson is Professor of sustainable development at the University of Surrey and Director of the Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP). He currently holds a Professorial Fellowship on Prosperity and Sustainability in the Green Economy (PASSAGE) funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).

Previously, Professor Jackson was Director of the Sustainable Lifestyles Research Group, and in 2006, he became a founding Director of RESOLVE. Between 2004 and 2011, he was Economics Commissioner on the UK Sustainable Development Commission, during which role he published the controversial book Prosperity without Growth – economics for a finite planet (Routledge/Earthscan, 2009). A second edition of this work appeared in 2017.

Professor Jackson has been at the forefront of international debates about sustainable development for over two decades and has worked closely with the UK Government, the United Nations, and numerous private companies and NGOs to apply social science research to the goal of sustainability. Besides his academic and social work, he is also an award-winning playwright with numerous radio-writing credits for the BBC.
