Procedure:2-pentanol alcohol (1.5mL) weighed and mixed with glacial acetic acid (appr. 3mL) and 3 drops concentrated sulfuric acid in round-bottom flask. Mixture was then heated to reflux for 60 minutes. Reaction mixture allowed to cool to room temperature and 5% aqueous sodium bicarbonate (3mL) was slowly stirred into mixture until carbon dioxide formation stopped. Mixture was then transferred to centrifuge tube, shaken, and allowed to settle. The lower aqueous level was removed with Pasteur pipet. Addition of bicarbonate and removal of aqueous layer repeated twice more. Microspatula of granular sodium sulfate then added and solution capped and let stood for 10 minutes. The dry ester was transferred to round-bottom flask with boiling chip and distilled using hickman stillhead at about 180 C for 30 minutes. Boiling point was recorded by measuring vapors released. The acetate was then transferred to a tared vial and weighed. IR spectrum and NMR analysis were then performed on sample.
