‘No sweat no gain’ is an age old adage that how-

ever has sustained its relevance today and indeed

in the future. Three staffers at Chitungwiza Cen-

tral Hospital have clearly lived by this adage and

have reaped the sweet gains of their sweat. The three recently scooped awards of ex-

cellence in their different nursing departments

during the nurses and midwives’ graduation and

prize giving ceremony held at Margolis Resort. The awards were in three categories

namely the Principal Nursing Officer’s Trophy

for the Best Nurse Aid, Chitungwiza Central

Hospital Trophy for the Best Nurse and the

Chief Executive Officer’s Trophy for the Best

Ward Manager. Mrs Confidence Ndove was crowned the

Best Nurse Aide Award while Constance Chata-

dza nee Chifamba walked away with the Best

Nurse of the Year accolade. The Best Ward

Manager Award went to Mrs Sophia Mawoyo

who broke the record by scooping the award for

the second time. Mawoyo who is a Sister-in-Charge said

she was thrilled to emerge a winner. She said: “I feel honoured to win this ac-

colade for the second time. I give all the credit to

God who gives me courage and strength to work

at this hospital”. She also thanked the hospital manage-

ment for recognizing hardworking nurses. ‘Winning this accolade for the second

time means a lot to me. I will continue working

hard,” Sr Mawoyo said. Nurse Aid Ndove said she attributed her

success at the workplace to hard work, dedica-

tion to duty and general respect of her seniors

and fellow workers. A process of nomination was done at the

hospital from members of staff in all depart-

ments which included the administration depart-

ments, nursing and non-nursing departments.

Attributes of the winners included commit-

ment to work, punctuality, smartness, good

communication and relations with members of

the health team and patients. The awards, which are presented annu-

ally, offer nurses the opportunity to inspire

others to be great leaders. It is not only nurses

who benefit from the inspiration provided by

such recognition, but all staff members at the

hospital. Ms Ndove started working at CCH as a

general hand in 2008 and was promoted to the

nurse aid post in 2013. “I was shocked to hear that I was nom-

inated as the best nurse aid. I least expected it.

There are many whom I thought would clinch

that accolade. Nonetheless I was happy and

am grateful to all the members of staff for

choosing me. I was thrilled because people

appreciate my work,” said Ms Ndove. Her message to other nurse aides and

all workers at the hospital is that hard work is

rewarding and certainly does not kill. All three winners said they were sur-

prised to be announced as winners. “I nominated others whom I thought were

better deserving of the award than myself, but

little did I know that there was something in

store for me,” said Sr. Chifamba. She added: “Nursing is my passion and

while carrying out my duties I always do it

diligently and that is why I chose to be a

nurse. Now I believe in myself more and

would like to maintain this noble status so that

I will keep winning.” She advised fellow workers that the

secret to great leadership is hard work and the

ability and willingness to encourage and moti-

vate those that they lead.

Professor Auxilia Chideme-Munodawafa is the Vice Chairperson of the Health Service Board. She is a qualified

Nurse Midwife and Scientist, who graduated from Mpilo Central Hospital with a General Nurse diploma in 1969, a

Midwifery diploma in 1978 from Harare Hospital, and a Nursing Administration diploma in 1989 from Parirenyat-

wa hospital. She has over 45 years of working in health care delivery systems in Zimbabwe and in USA. About 15

years of this experience in the academic field of teaching in various health care programs at Universities in Zimba-

bwe and in Cleveland Ohio, USA.

Professor Chideme-Munodawafa obtained her graduate education from USA. She graduated from Case Western

Reserve University with a BSN/Nursing Science in 1994; and a PhD in Nursing in 2007. Both degrees were sup-

ported by W K Kellogg scholarships. She then lived in Cleveland Ohio post PhD graduation for over 10 years be-

fore re-locating to Zimbabwe in 2010 and was recruited by Africa University as Professor, becoming the 1st and the

only Nursing Professor in Zimbabwe until 2017 when 2 more professors were promoted at the University of Zimba-

bwe. She was appointed as Assistant Dean 2012-2016, again becoming one of the 2 nurses in Zimbabwe to rise to

Deanship level in Zimbabwe. She acted as Dean on several occasions and developed a total of 3 new programs un-

der her leadership; The Laboratory Science Honors Degree 4-year program, created new approach of instruction of

Block Release for two programs, BSN, and MPH in the then Faculty of Health Sciences.

While in the USA, she worked as a Director in Palliative Care at the Cleveland Clinic group of hospitals. Her role,

apart from a Nurse Practitioner’s role in Palliative care, was teaching and mentoring Medical Residency in the Palli-

ative Care training program and acting as principal investigator to the various research activities carried out in palli-

ative care by the medical residents.

Professor Auxilia Chideme-Munodawafa has served on several boards, both nationally and internationally. The fol-

lowing are some of the boards ; The Zimbabwe Open University Board; 2014-2017, Chairing the Quality As-

surence and Staff Development committee; Africa University Board, 2016-2017, serving on the Audit Committee:

The Notre Dame College Board, USA, 2008-2010; The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission for

Universities, USA, 2004-2010; The International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care (ISNCC) 1996- 2004 represent-

ing Africa and The Middle East,; ISNCC- 2010-2014 chairing the staff Development committee; The Zimbabwe

Cancer Registry Advisory Board, 2010- Current, and many others. These Board memberships have seen her travel

extensively to countries such as England, Israel, Norway, Australia, Abudabi, Rio De Jenerio, Canada, Singapore, to

name but a few for conferences and research activities.

She is a member of the Zimbabwe Nurse Midwives, a Member of the East Central and Southern College of Nurses,

and a member of the Ohio Hospice and Palliative Care Associations.
