October 14, 2016 Members of Aamjiwnaang First Nation
RE: Anishinabek Education System (AES) Aamjiwnaang First Nation, as part of the Anishinabek Nation, is coming up to the largest and most his-torical Indigenous Education Agreement Vote in history. After 21 years of research and planning, the Anishinabek Education System (AES) Agreement has been created by the Anishinabek Nation to regain and reclaim our right to education our own people The AES Vote will take place November 28th – December 2nd, 2016. The proposed AES will be controlled completely by First Nations, not by any central body (i.e. The Union of Ontario Indians or Anishinabek Nation would not be part of the proposed system). The AES will pro-vide students a better education and help them build better lives. Today, 9 out of 10 Anishinaabe stu-dents go to provincial schools off reserve, where they don’t learn about being Anishinaabe. We need our Elders, Parents, Youth and all membership to get informed, and cast their vote to say YES to the AES to reclaim and exercise the rights, dignity and power lost after the Residential School Era – which has had lasting intergenerational effects. The Anishinabek Education System is a chance to start on a new path – and show that the Indian Act doesn’t work for us. We have an inherent right to govern ourselves and shape and keep our children’s (and all learners) destinies in our hands beginning with a system designed, governed and taught by us. Your informed decision to say YES to the AES is of critical importance. A countdown to voting days, help-ful information, the Draft Anishinabek Nation Education Agreement, the Fiscal Transfer Agreement and more are all available at sayyestoaes.ca, or call 1-877-497-3799.

To the members of Aamjiwnaang, As the Founder and Director of the Great Lakes Canoe Journey Project, I am happy to bring my program to the community after founding the project in 2014 when we launched our pilot year in Toronto. This year is very exciting for the project, as we received funding from LUSH Charity Pot to build our very own canoe. After building canoes for other communities and organizations, the funding from LUSH in addition to finan-cial support from Chief and Council, has provided the Great Lakes Canoe Journey Project with the oppor-tunity to teach the members of Aamjiwnaang about birch bark canoe building. This opportunity is unique and rare, as there are few canoe builders left around the Great Lakes Basin and through the Great Lakes Canoe Journey Project, Aamjiwnaang community members will become carriers of this knowledge. Upon the completion of the build, the canoe will journey throughout the Great Lakes and Anishinabek Nation serving as a vehicle and a teacher for other communities to learn about Anishinaabe canoe culture, history and birch bark canoe building. I encourage everyone to stop by throughout the week to learn from our distinguished guest, Chuck Com-manda, who is the Grandson of William Commanda, who was a Master Canoe Builder and Wampum Carri-er for the Algonquin Nation. Chuck carries a wealth of knowledge from his grandfather, as well as, has many years of experience in teaching basket-making and birch bark canoe building. I look forward to seeing everyone throughout the week. Sylvia Plain

Travelling Seniors
News & Updates...
Travelling Seniors hold
monthly meetings the first
Wednesday of every month at
6:00 pm at the Community
Centre in the Seniors Room.
Note: The next meeting will
be held on November 2nd. Thank You
It was wonderful to see so many people from our
community get involved in the fundraiser for BA-
BY GRACIE and family.
A lot of people helped out in so many ways. Earl
brought over a long table. A lot of people helped
with the many ingredients needed to bake. By
Thursday I was turning away offers of milk and
eggs.
I had help with the apple pies. Linda W. and Ash-
ley J. peeled pot after pot of apples. People were
at the door by 9 am both mornings. We kept bak-
ing and selling at the same time.
I was hoping that we could make at least $500. By
noon Saturday we were sold out and much to my
amazement we had received more than twice that
amount. A number of people had given extra do-
nations.
I was able to take the card and money to London
on THANKSGIVING DAY.
Gracie has been through a lot, but after the last
three weeks Beth was so glad to be able to hold her
again.
Thank you so much for all your prayers and sup-
port.
Mary Bird.
Greetings Aamjiwnaang!
I am now back from my maternity leave.
I’m so thankful to have had the opportunity
to focus on my family and our well-being.
Thank you to Trudy, Joanne and Tracey for
covering some of my duties while I was
away. I know your programs, clients and
coworkers also sacrificed time to make it
possible and I appreciate it.
I’m happy to be back and I look forward to
seeing you around the community.
In the spirit of wellness,
Sara Plain, Health Director

THANK YOU This letter is to express my gratitude to my parents John and Marjorie Robertson, my grandparents Bob and Geraldine Robertson for encouraging me to pursue my dream. They are always there for me. Figure skating is a passion for me and if it were not for their support, I would not be able to participate in this sport. My gratitude also goes out to the DREAM CATCHER for the funds to pursue this dream. This past year I have competed in several competitions and have received GOLD in all of them. It is good to strive to a challenge and be successful in that pursuit. Respectfully submitted by Avery Robertson

TREE PLANTING CELEBRATION TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2016
On October 11, 2016, Aamjiwnaang First Cub Scouts with representatives from Scouts Internation-
al, Representatives from Loblaw Companies Ltd., Aamjiwnaang’s Greenhouse Technicians and representa-
tives from Health and Environment Committees were on hand for a tree planting celebration. Philip Ma-
ness was on hand representing Chief & Council and Scouts and provided the prayer for the day.
Aamjiwnaang First Cub Scouts have adopted and planted two pear trees near their meeting location
of the community center. They will continue to learn about their trees and provide water and nourishment
to them so the trees may grow healthy and produce much harvest in the coming years.
In the winter of 2016, Aamjiwnaang First Nation Health and Environment Committees applied for a
grant from Tree Canada to plant edible trees and shrubs in our community. Aamjiwnaang was successful in
their application.
So this year, planting began. With the help of Aamjiwnaang’s Green House Technicians, trees and
shrubs have been planted in 4 areas in the community so that harvest from these plants would be accessible
to all. The four locations include: The Health Center, the Community Center, the Day Care and near the
Seniors Complex. Among the edible trees planted are: dwarf and semi-dwarf apple trees, pear, plum, paw-
paw trees, serviceberry and elderberry. Shrubs include raspberry and blueberry and many more perennials.
The mini dwarf apple trees should start producing full yields in approximately 3 years!

Notice of Road Closure In the coming weeks, Lambton County has arranged to have the Marsh Creek culvert on Lasalle Line replaced. Starting October 17, 2016 informational signs will be posted on Highway 40, on both northbound and southbound sides, as well as along St. Clair Parkway, also both northbound and southbound sides. They will indicate Lasalle line will be closed for roadwork. The replacement work is scheduled to begin on October 31, 2016 for a period of 3 weeks. The time frame for the work may vary, depending on days lost due to the weather. Once the roadwork is to begin, signage will be posted indicating "Road Closed" at Highway 40/Lasalle, as well as at St. Clair Parkway/Lasalle Line. Additional signage, "Road Closed-Local Traffic Only" will be posted at Tashmoo/Lasalle and again at South Vidal/Lasalle. City fire, police, school buses and garbage collection companies will be notified. The Aamjiwnaang bus driver will also be noti-fied. Shell may have their shutdown workers en-tering and leaving their parking area on Lasalle Line during a portion of the road-work. Shell representatives have been ad-vised of traffic concerns. Namely, workers using S. Vidal as a preferred traffic route. Shell will advise the workers to use St. Clair Parkway as the primary route to enter/exit the area. Paul daSilva, CET Coordinator of Engineering St.Clair Township [email protected]
Notice of Road Closure The Township of St. Clair is planning to rehabilitate a concrete box culvert on LaSalle Line between Ladysmith Road and Tecumseh Road. Government of Canada Announces Mental
Wellness Help Line for Indigenous Peoples
The First Nations and Inuit Hope for Wellness Help Line provides culturally competent support 24/7
Left untreated, mental illness can be incredibly damaging to individuals and communities, and supports need to be both accessible and culturally appropriate. That is why the Government of Canada is committed to working with First Nations and Inuit leaders, as well as provincial and ter-ritorial governments, to provide effective, sustainable and culturally appropriate mental wellness programs and services for First Nations and Inuit. Today, the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Health, announced the launch of the national toll-free First Nations and Inuit Hope for Wellness Help Line. The Help Line, which started operation on October 1, provides immediate, culturally competent, telephone crisis intervention counselling support for First Nations and Inuit, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Counsellors can also work with callers to identify follow-up services they can access. Counselling is available in Eng-lish and French and, upon request, in Cree, Ojibway, and Inuktut. Health Canada will continue to work with Indigenous leaders to develop a long-term plan to ad-dress mental health issues being faced by Indigenous peoples.
Quick Facts
The new toll-free number for the First Nations and Inuit Hope for Wellness Help Line is 1-855-242-3310.
Indigenous people are at a greater risk of experiencing mental health issues. Suicide is a sig-nificant concern in some communities, particularly in the North and in remote areas.
The Help Line is being funded as part of the $69 million announced by the Government of Canada in June 2016 to support crisis response teams, mental wellness teams and increased access to mental health care services.
The Government of Canada provides more than $300 million annually for mental wellness programming for First Nations on reserve and Inuit in Inuit communities.
Chief and Council have supported the initiation of a Beaver Scouts program for youth ages
5 – 7 years. There will be an opening for 12 youth. Youth will be accepted on a “first
come, first served” basis. If you have a child that would be interested in this program,
please contact Verlynn Plain at 519-491-2160 by Thursday, November 10, 2016.
It is anticipated that the program will start immediately.
