FROM NAS KEY WEST FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES

The most joyous of times can also be deadly. For example, during the

Christmas season, Christmas trees are involved in approxi-mately 400 fires annually, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Short-circuiting tree lights are cited as the leading cause. As the holidays approach, Naval Air Station Key West’s Fire and Emergency Services Prevention Office offers these safety tips for choosing and preparing Christmas trees for decoration that will minimize the risk of fire and injuries.

Choosing a TreeIf you’re buying an artificial tree, it should bear the “Fire Resistant” label. While this type of tree can catch fire, it will resist burning and should extinguish quickly.

If you’re buying a natural tree, buy the freshest you can find. A fresh tree is green, needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, nee-dles do not break. The trunk butt is sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles. Watch out for trees with a greenish cast to their trunks and branches; many growers spray trees with green paint to make them look more appealing. Cut at least one inch off the trunk’s base to expose fresh wood for better water absorption. A tree will absorb as much as a gallon of water or more in the first 24 hours and one or more quarts a day thereafter. A seal of dried sap will form over the cut stump in four to six hours if water drops below the base of the tree, preventing the tree from absorbing water later when the tree stand is refilled. If a seal does form, another fresh cut will need to be made.

Setting Up and Decorating Your TreeSet up the tree away from fire-places, portable heaters, heat-er vents and television sets. Place it out of the way of traffic and do not block doorways. Use thin guy wires to secure tall trees to walls or ceiling; the wires will be almost invisible. Because heated rooms dry out natural trees rapidly, keep the stand filled with water; check the water level daily. A six-foot tree will absorb one gallon of water every two days.

• Use only lights tested for safety by a recognized test-ing laboratory, such as Underwriters’ Laboratories. Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections, and throw out damaged sets. Miniature lights are pre-ferred, for their cool-burning bulbs. Position bulbs so that they aren’t in direct contact with needles or ornaments.

• Use no more than three standard-size sets of lights per single extension cord (maximum of 200 miniature lights or 150 larger lights). Only one extension cord should be used per outlet.

• Be careful where you place electrical cords. Don’t run electrical cords under rugs; walking traffic can weaken the insulation and the wires can overheat, increasing the chances for fire or electric shock. Be careful when plac-ing cords behind or beneath furniture; pinched cords can fray and short. Keep animals away from cords to avoid

entanglement and chewing. Keep cords and lights away from the tree’s water supply.

• Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with elec-tricity from faulty lights, and a person touching a branch could be electrocuted.

• Turn off all lights before going to bed or leaving the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.

• Use only non-combustible or flame-resistant materials to trim a tree.

• Never use lighted candles on a tree (even an artificial tree) or near other evergreens. -Always use non-flammable holders, and place candles where they will not be knocked down.

• Decorative lighted villages, Nativity scenes, electric trains and other electrically powered scenery and figures should be monitored like other decorative lighting.

Safe End to the Holiday SeasonFor many folks, it’s hard to let go of the holiday spirit, and taking down the Christmas tree isn’t nearly as much fun as putting it up. But the lon-ger a tree stays up, the greater a fire hazard it becomes. It’s best to discard trees within one month after purchase. The best way to dispose of your tree is to take it to a tree recy-cling center or have it hauled away by a community pick-up service. If you live in the coun-try or town where there is no tree recycling or pick-up pro-gram, contact local authorities for a recommended means of disposal.

Careful handling of lights when you are taking them down and repacking them will reduce the chances of damag-ing a good set of lights.

For more information on Christmas tree safety, please call the NAS Key West Fire and Emergency Services Prevention Office at 293-5799.

a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Test. The 16-page assessment identifies people’s prefer-ences, said Dowling, and puts them into classifications such as “introvert” or “extrovert,” a “thinker” or a “feeler.”

Dowling said the assess-ment is an important first step because it helps couples understand their preferences which sometimes are based on how people have grown up.

“Understand that the dynam-ics of a person have a lot to do with who we are and why we do what we do,” said Dowling. “It’s hard to understand a complex individual, and when two people come together there are a lot of dynamics in that. If you can understand your partner then you can improve communication.”

“The workshop was very good, and very informative,” said Carmen Kelsick, a partici-pant. “After taking the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, I actually learned a lot about myself and my husband.”

“We are a lot more compat-ible than I thought,” she added, laughing.

After the assessment, the group moved into talking about active listening. During this portion the couples learn a group of skills that help tell the speaker they are listening. Some of these include keeping eye contact, acknowledging the speaker, really hearing the per-son, being able to paraphrase back what they said, being non-judgmental and fact-find-ing communication.

“I try to convey active listen-ing is a skill good for commu-nication, not only with each other, but also with other peo-ple,” Dowling said.

After couples learn to master these skills, they move into a more involved activity - “X, Y, Z” statements.

“It’s a statement like ‘When you do this [X], in this cir-cumstance [Y], I feel this [Z],’” Dowling said. “When a couple puts their feelings into the X, Y, Z statements, they can explain how it impacts them without making the other person defen-sive or using threats.”

“My wife and I use these statements,” Dowling said. “One time, I came home later than normal. When I got home she said ‘I was worried because you didn’t call and you were late.’ I could feel what my behavior did to her, it was not accusatory, and I didn’t have to be defensive.

“She opened up for me to see into her and see how she felt,” he

continued. “The ball was in my court. Did I want her to feel wor-ried? No. Now, if I’m late, I’ll call.”

This type of communica-tion helps to change negative behaviors into positive ones and to help couples learn about what they consider a negative or a positive, he said.

“All couples need to come a place to see themselves as a team, as partners who solve problems together,” he added. “And they need to turn fighting each other into fighting with each other for a solution.”

A big deterrent to communi-cation, Dowling stressed, can be learning to forgive.

“Marriage needs forgive-ness to move onwards,” he explained.

“When we haven’t forgiven someone, we hold a debt over them. And if we have a debt, we’re looking for payment. It’s not so much you release them, but by forgiving them you release yourself.”

After the workshop, Kelsick

said it was a great tool for cou-ples, even if they believed they didn’t have communication problems.

“The workshop is geared to learn how to use tools for a bet-ter communication and under-standing of each other. I highly recommend it,” she said.

What’s unique about the workshop, Dowling said, is that couples get a chance to be social, find out they are not alone and that every relation-ship is not perfect.

“I hear ‘We’re not so weird after all,’” Dowling said, laugh-ing, “Other couples are going through the same thing and others have to work at it too.”

Dowling, who holds two masters degrees in divin-ity and counseling and was part of Chaplain’s Religious Enrichment Development Operation (CREDO), where he conducted numerous marriage retreats, said he plans to hold communication workshops once a quarter.

Can I get a witness?

There was a screech and then a “bam, bam” that woke us up at 12:30

one night. A driver missed the turn, went over the sidewalk, and into the water. On another evening a screech and a “bam” interrupted our dinner on the balcony. The driver ended up under his scooter after leav-ing the road and hitting some rocks. We have witnessed driv-ers as they park their cars on the

sidewalk and others make ille-gal u-turns at the ninety-degree bend where South Roosevelt Boulevard and Bertha meet. Every day there is something new to witness in Key West.

Witnesses are important. Recently I conducted a wed-ding outside on Trumbo Point and after the wedding I needed the signatures of two witnesses. Witnesses are a necessary part of many official events, but to be a witness usually is not a special calling. Often what we witness is just part of life. The longer you live, the more you are going to witness.

Marvin Gaye had a popu-lar song entitled, “Can I Get a Witness.” Gaye’s song is about love gone bad, but the title

and mean-ing is rooted in the African A m e r i c a n church expe-rience. “Can I get a witness?” is a question that one who was testifying about God’s saving help in their life would

ask of the congregation. It

sought confirmation from oth-ers of what had happened in their life through God’s grace.

Witnesses were important in the Bible. A witness confirmed the truth about a person or event and John the Baptist was a witness to the real meaning of Christmas. He wasn’t old enough to do it at Christ’s birth, but he grew up and showed every-one where to look and who to believe in. He got to experience something new; something that changed his life and his world. He was a witness.

Christmas celebrates how God came down and lived

among us in human flesh. John was a witness to that ongoing event. He experienced Christ’s impact on people’s lives and was called to witness to that fact.

The true celebration of Christmas comes through understanding that it is more than a day; it is the celebra-tion of God’s continual work in the lives of people. Can I get a witness?

Using a civilian contractor as the adversary squadron allows for direct and on-demand training with the air wing, said Matt “Race” Bannon of ATAC.

“We provide dedicated sup-port to the air wing, whereas Navy adversary squadrons may not always be able to meet the schedules of the wings, due

to other duties,” said Bannon. “We also provide a dissimilar aircraft for the wings to train against.”

“This is a very, very key element in their pre-deploy-ment training where they really are able to focus on air-to-air training,” said NAS Key West Commanding Officer Capt. Steven Holmes. “They work in bigger exercises, not the smaller scenarios, and they are really learning to

fight as a team, and react as a team, against a large adver-sary presence.”

CVW-1 squadrons training at Key West this month are Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 211 “Fighting Checkmates,” VFA-136 “Knighthawks,” VFA-11 “The Red Rippers,” Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 251 “Thunderbolts,” and Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 123 “The Screwtops.”

FROM NAS KEY WEST PUBLIC AFFAIRSContributed photos

Volunteers from VFA 106 “The Gladiators,” and Sailors from Naval Air Station Key West have

been busy before the holidays work-ing at Habitat for Humanity housing construction at Bayside Landing on Big Coppitt Key and Stock Island.

Sailors from NAS and its tenant com-mands worked at Bayside Landing Nov 12 and at the Stock Island Apartments on Nov. 13. The Gladiators worked at Bayside Landing Nov. 14 and got a lot of painting, carpentry and other work done. Both groups helped to put the Habitat families closer toward getting into their new homes.

Any individual or group wishing to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity should visit Habitat’s web site at www.habitatlowerkeys.org and click on “Volunteer” for complete information or call Anna Symington at 294-9006.

Relay For Life looking for teamsFROM NAS KEY WEST PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Relay For Life of the Lower Keys is holding a community kickoff

party at 5:30 tonight at the Conch Flyer in the Key West airport.

The “We’re Not Gonna Take It” kickoff party is open to everyone and is an event to get teams interested and excited about the 2010 Relay For Life event. There will be food, door prizes and a cash bar. Parking will be validated. For more information, call 292-2333.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a rep-resentative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.
