unfair treaties including the Treaty of Nanjing, which

forced them to pay Britian back after the Opium Wars, trade with Britain, and they had to allow British people

living in China to follow only British rules.

China allowed different nations to trade in different portsThe US gained total trading privliges. (Caswell, 2003).

France, Britain, Germany, Japan and Russia had trading rights in China.

The Opium WarsBritain was once one of the largest drug traficking nations in the world. In 1836, the Chinese goverment made Opium illegal, the main drug being imported into China by Britain. The goverment fought fiercely against the importation of this drug. The Chinese, inspired by goverment official Lin Tse-hsü, started to turn back British trading ships. Then, in June of 1840, the British sent warships to China, and then forced an unreasonable trade agreement with China.

China was forced to allow Britain to sell opium and Britain gained control of Hong Kong.
