General ophthalmology is the backbone of any eye hospital and here at Al-Shifa it is the largest Division of the hospital. General Ophthalmology has expanded the number of clinics in both OPD I and II; has acquired new OPD and OT equipment; and has started the wet lab for training of Residents. In addition to three Consultants, Registrars have been hired to meet the expanding clinical and training demands. As the largest number of surgeries is in the domain of cataract, this expansion has streamlined with clearer pre and post-op responsibilities. This has led to a shorter waiting time for operations, fewer complications and better management. Moreover, this has taken much of the cataract load off the sub-specialty surgeons as well.
