The Children in Limbo Task Force in partnership with youth is holding a Symposium. Children at the Centre: Their Right to Truth and Voice New legislation, “The Child, Youth and Family Services Act” will soon replace the “Child and Family Services Act, 1984.” While the paramount purpose of the new Act is still to protect the best interests and well-being of children, the new Act places children and youth at the centre of decision-making about their own lives. In order to guarantee those rights, the preamble to the legislation refers to The U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child, Katelynn’s Principle, the Canadian Charter of Right and Freedoms, and the Human Rights Code. In November of 2016, the Children in Limbo Task Force (CLTF) celebrated the lifetime work of child psychiatrist, Dr. Jim Wilkes, at a meeting which viewed his video ”Truth or Consequences” and heard Task Force members speak to the importance of telling children the truth about their lives. This event is a follow-up to that November meeting. Friday, November 24th 9 AM - 4 PM Jewish Family & Child, 4600 Bathurst St., Lipa Green Building, Toronto Frontline child welfare workers, supervisors, mental health clinicians, lawyers, adoption workers, and adoptive and foster parents will benefit from this Symposium. “Listening to Children — From Rights to Love”Irwin Elman was appointed the Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth in 2008 to elevate the voices of children and youth in its mandate. Drawing on the strength of young people, the Advocate’s Office has worked to fill the gap between what government, service providers and policy-makers intend, and the reality experienced by some of the most vulnerable children and youth in Ontario.
