A message from the Ontario Health Unit
Clean out your medicine cabinet
It’s important to clean out your medicine cabinet regularly. By keeping unused, unwanted or expired medication in your home, you risk:
children or even animals being poisoned if they find and swallow medication
your kids or their friends taking them to get “high” a home break-in by thieves looking to get their hands on medication
By flushing, pouring or throwing medication in the trash, you risk:
contaminating the water harming wildlife allowing medication to be scavenged and illegally sold
There is a safer way to get rid of your medication. Return it to its originating pharmacy or, if you live in Cornwall, drop it off at your nearest Medi Drop box. Through a partnership with the Cornwall Community Police Service and the Eastern Ontario Health Unit, four Medi Drop boxes have been placed throughout the City of Cornwall. For details, visit www.MediDrop.ca.
Kindergarten Registration Continues
Another important reminder that it is time to pre-register your child for full day every day kindergarten class for next September. Please share this message with other parents in the community. Pre-registration is often the first opportunity for parents and their children to become familiarized with the Upper Canada District School Board and all of the wonderful learning opportunities we have to offer. There are 2 ways to pre-register a child:
1) By calling the school to request a paper registration form OR
2) By going on line to the UCDSB website and accessing the link : http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Registration_2012
Proof of each child’s birth and immunization is, of course, always required. Please call the school office 613 673 5414 if you require assistance and more information.
Inclement Weather Transportation
In the case of poor weather conditions bus cancellations will be posted by 6:15 am on the transportation website: www.steo.ca. You can also call 1-866-629-0629 or listen to local radio stations. Please note that Plantagenet Public School is part of the Rockland family of schools.
School Activity Update
Report cards
Term One Report Cards will be going home on Tuesday, February 12th. Please comment and sign on the parents’ response portion on the 4th page and return this portion to your child’s teacher. Students are asked to complete the section on page 3, and return this portion as well.
Transition Activities
An information session is planned for parents and students in grades 6 at RDHS on Tuesday, February 5th from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. This would definitely be a worthwhile session to receive information about the preparations and ask specific questions about the Intermediate school.
Carnival Day – February 22 nd
On Friday, February 22nd, all students will take part in a fun-filled day! During the morning, we have exciting outdoor activities planned. Afterwards, a lunch will be provided to all students, generously donated by La Binerie. To end the day, we will be entertained by a French performer, Beebo!
Please note that students who have ordered pizza for the 22nd
will get it on the 21st instead.
Tie-dye activity
Our tie-dye activity scheduled for Tuesday January 29th has been postponed to Monday, February 4th. A free lunch will also be served. Mark your calendars for this exciting event.

Character Education Assembly
This month’s character Education assembly will be held on Thursday, February 28th. Our Character Education virtue for February is kindness. Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.
Home Literacy Activities
1. Read your child’s favorite story to him/her in a comfortable, quiet place. Ask your child to predict what will happen next.
2. Start the day by reading the newspaper. Point out interesting pictures to your child and read the captions together.
3. Read a story with your child, such as Is Your Mama a Llama? Pick a word from the book and make a rhyme with each consonant in the alphabet—“bat, cat, dat…”
4. Boost your child’s word power by taking a “naming walk” indoors or outdoors, naming eac item you come to—dog, chair, car, tree, etc.
5. Art day: Think of ways to expand vocabulary with description words—color names (as found on crayons) and words like “oozing” and “dripping.” 6. Make a photo album by pasting photos or magazine pictures on construction paper. Write captions or record your child’s story about the pictures.
