READING FROM THE HEBREW SCRIPTURE Elaine Matthes One: Turn aside now from your busyness and observe this great sight. All: We stand on holy ground; we listen for God’s call.

Exodus 3:1-6

Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. Then Moses said, ‘I must turn aside and look at this great sight and see why the bush is not burned up.’ When the LORD saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, ‘Moses, Moses!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ Then he said, ‘Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.’ He said further, ‘I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Sarah and Hagar; the God of Isaac and Rebecca; and the God of Jacob, Rachel and Leah.’ And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

RESPONSE

One: Sometimes God speaks through burning words. What is our response?

All: We seek to know the Holy One, even as we are known.

THE GOSPEL LESSON Rev. David W. Johnson

One: Be open now and allow the Holy One to touch and heal you. All: Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.

Mark 7:32-37

They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, ‘Ephphatha’, that is, ‘Be opened.’ And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. They were astounded beyond measure, saying, ‘He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.’

RESPONSE

One: Holy Wisdom, Holy Word! All: Thanks be to God!

SERMON “So Much Over So Little” Dr. Budd Friend-Jones “Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, ‘Ephphatha’, that is, ‘Be opened.’”

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

UNISON CALL TO OFFERING Joy Lambert Loving God, you have blessed us beyond measure. Your gifts inspire our gratitude, and your generosity invites us to be generous in return. *DOXOLOGY CALL TO PRAYER Rev. David W. Johnson One: God be with you.

All: And with your spirit.

One: Let us pray. O Lord, show us your mercy.

All: And grant us your salvation.

One: O God, make clean our hearts within us.

All: And take not your Holy Spirit from us.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER (debts)

Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors,

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil,

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
