ATTENDING TO GOD’S WORD

ANTIPHONAL READING Clergy, Cantor, and Congregation

Antiphon: Congregation may join the cantor in singing the antiphon.

Psalm 32:1-7

Cantor and Congregation One: 1 Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 2 Happy are those to whom

the Lord imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

Cantor and Congregation One: 3 While I kept silence, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. 5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity; I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord’, and you forgave the guilt of my sin.

Cantor and Congregation One: 6 Therefore let all who are faithful offer prayer to you; at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not reach them. 7 You are a hiding-place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with glad cries of deliverance.

Cantor and Congregation

RESPONSE

One: May God who commanded light to shine out of darkness enlighten our way today.

All: Amen.

READING FROM THE HEBREW SCRIPTURES Rev. David W. Johnson One: God’s message finds utterance in our midst. All: We wait and listen for God’s word to us today.

Psalm 51:1-2, 6-10 1 Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. 2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. 6 You desire truth in the inward being; therefore, teach me wisdom in my secret heart. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have crushed rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me.

RESPONSE

One: God’s mercy is vast.

All: May God cleanse our inmost hearts.

ANTHEM “Create In Me a Clean Heart, O God” The Community Quartet: Carl Mueller Rachel Carter, soprano Linda Jackson, alto Mal York, tenor Josh Pinnok, bass

Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me.

Cast me not away from thy presence; And take not thy holy spirit from me.

Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; And uphold me with thy free spirit.

Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; And sinners shall be converted unto thee.

Create in me a clean heart, O God!

THE GOSPEL LESSON Rev. David W. Johnson

One: Silence in us, O God, any voice but your own. All: May your Word be proclaimed and received here today.

Luke 11:1-4 1 He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord,

teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.’ 2 He said to them, ‘When you pray, say: Father hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. 3 Give us each day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial.’

RESPONSE

One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church! All: Thanks be to God!

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

UNISON CALL TO OFFERING Cassandra Coker All-giving God, we have known your righteousness, your constancy, and your patient love for us. May the gifts we bring in tribute to you reach out to those near and far who seek your goodness today. Amen.

OFFERTORY “My Song Shall Be Alway of the Loving-Kindness of the Lord” The Community Quartet Gerald Near

My song shall be alway of the loving-kindness of the Lord:

With my mouth will I show forth thy truth.

For I have said, mercy is set up forever:

Thy truth shalt thou stablish in the heav’ns.

My song shall be alway of the loving-kindness of the Lord:

With my mouth will I show forth thy truth.

With my mouth will I show forth thy truth.
