The main symptoms of coronavirus are: • a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or

back (you do not need to measure your temperature) • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an

hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)

• a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

To protect others, do not go to places like a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital if you have any of these symptoms. Stay at home (self-isolate) and get a test. ARE YOU INTERESTED IN CHIDEOCK HISTORY? We are in the process of setting up a new website in connection with the history of Chideock. The Chideock Society holds a huge archive of old photographs and other memorabilia and we hope over the next months to ‘scan’ all this material in to the new website so it is held safely and for everyone to see. The hard copies can then be placed with the Dorset Archive. If you can help in any way please contact Lyn Crisp on 01297 489098 or email me at [email protected]. We will also provide a link from the Community website to this new ‘history website’.

PELHAM COPSE, CHIDEOCK It would appear that a local anonymous resident has expressed some concern regarding our activity in the copse. To allay any concerns, these are the facts. We have lived in Chideock since 1996 and owned Pelham and the copse since 2001. During these last 19 years we have never cut down any trees nor instructed any other person to cut down any trees, and have no intention of doing so. During the violent storm of late October 2013 five trees within the copse were brought down and a further four suffered significant damage. Since 2013 as we were both initially employed full time, we were clearing the resulting debris on an “as and when” basis. It has always been our intention to clear the copse of debris, cut back bramble, ivy, nettles, and other invasive weeds which were stifling the growth of the remaining trees. It is also our intention in time to plant new trees to replace those felled by the storm. It is only in the last few months with both of us retired that we have been able to concentrate more effort in clearance and preparation of any replanting in the copse. Following a site visit and inspection by an Enforcement Officer from Dorset CC, we were able to confirm all this supported by photographic and documentary evidence, to the satisfaction of the officer. We wish to make it clear that we wish to restore the copse to be a more manageable area to encourage more wildlife for the benefit of all. Eric and Denise Tweddle Chideock Church At long last St Giles, Chideock opened the doors and we welcomed people to a Chideock Praise Service. The service was led by Rev Ginny Luckett with Rev John Eade preaching a thought-provoking sermon. It was lovely to be back in church for a service after so many months. 27 people attended. 15 from our own community with others from churches within our Benefice. We were particularly pleased to see our Team Rector, Rev Chris Martin who also attended the service. Everything went well with everybody hand sanitising, wearing masks and social distancing. The congregation were led to their designated seats ensuring a suitable space round each person. Sue Pettifer played some reflective music on the organ rather than hymns as there was no singing allowed. This was another step towards "normality" and we look forward to holding more services at Chideock very soon. Val Hunt, Church Warden

DIAL A FRIEND – COASTAL CLUSTER Maybe you know of someone, or you happen to be that someone, who lives alone and has little social contact. Are you aware of what is available? Do you live in the Chideock, Morcombelake or Lyme Regis areas and would like even a brief visit, maybe simply for a talk. We are members of a Team from these local churches. Would you like to meet us and see what we can share together? If you would then please just call Anne: 01297 442 558; Ann: 01297 489 532. (NOTE: obviously visits are temporarily suspended) Further thoughts on the A35 Further to last month’s article in the Chideock News from CBWG, I feel the village should be reminded that there are other points of view in the long-standing issue of traffic through Chideock and the pollution, danger, vibration, noise and severance which it brings with it. Though Chideock may have the highest pollution levels, it is by no means the only village on the A35 whose quality of life is worsened by the road. Winterborne Abbas, Morecombelake, Kilmington, and Wilmington would no doubt all be very relieved if the traffic on the A35 were diverted somewhere else. If the A35 were detrunked the heavy goods vehicles would have to find a different route. Alternatively, another road which bypasses all the affected villages could be built. Less expensive solutions could also be sought which reduce traffic speed and pollution. Could I remind the CBWG that in August 2017 a village poll was held at their request. There were two questions in the poll. Q1. Do you support the construction of a new A35 trunk road Chideock bypass which does not pass through any part of the parish of Chideock? Result: Yes votes 155. No votes 34 Q2. Do you support that the A35 from Dorchester to Honiton be detrunked and therefore designated a scenic route? Result: Yes votes104. No votes 71. The CBWG argue that these results should be ignored because they assert that the two proposals could never happen. Just as unlikely is the bypass which they propose. I therefore suggest that we seek a way forward which will include the support of all the village and not just a vocal minority. After all, we would all like a more peaceful life and if we work together we have a far greater chance of achieving it. Meanwhile, I would like to congratulate Meash Maskell on his sterling work in proposing a cycle/pedestrian all-weather route from Chideock to Bridport and encourage you all to support him in every way you can. Deirdre Coates

Ruth Wrixton (Hon. Editor) THE EVER POPULAR CHIDEOCK QUIZ NIGHT So, so sorry to disappoint all you Chideock Quizzers. Following much discussion re Covid 19 guidelines and consideration for all our safety, reluctantly, we have decided to continue our pause in staging our popular Quiz night in October and into 2021. All of the key reasons are well known to us all, the only question none of us can answer, is when can we resume!! So we will, like everyone else, just wait and see, comply with all regulations and guidelines and resume when it is safe and legal to do so. In the meantime I've put together a dozen teasers for you to help keep the brain in gear, answers in the November issue. Unfortunately, this has added to the financial problems which we have been having this subscription year. The final tally before lockdown this year was only 106 renewals/new members. This has meant a huge drop in the money available for the magazine. I have yet to prepare the final accounts for the year but as it currently stands, with the prize money paid out so far having been set on the basis that there would be more members, the figure will be considerably less than the £800 the magazine received last year. As Tony’s original proposition was that 50% of subscriptions (after expenses) should go out as prizes, I intend to ensure that 50% of the actual subs received this year is paid to the magazine. This will leave a prize fund undrawn for the year of approximately £250. I don’t intend, indeed will not be able, to restart the club until it is safe to hold events at which the draw can take place, and also be safe for collection of subs and distribution of prizes. This will leave the magazine with no monetary support from the Club for the foreseeable future. Given these circumstances, I am proposing that this remaining prize fund could be donated to the magazine to help it through the next year. As there is no easy way of gauging members’ views on this, I am suggesting that, if you object to this and would like the prizes drawn at some date in the future, then please let me know by 11th October. After this date I will compile the final accounts for the draw year 2019-2020. My email is [email protected] or you can write to me at Walnut Cottage, Chideock, DT6 6JW. Thank you for your support. Julia.

Chideock Village Hall News Hall reopening The village hall reopened as planned on the 31st August, just in time to host the August Parish Council meeting. Since then we have welcomed back the Whitchurch Table Tennis group and we are working with other groups to enable them to return to the hall e.g. Art Group. Some groups, such as dance classes, are constrained by their national association’s guidelines and these will need to be relaxed before they can plan to return to the hall. The ‘Rule of 6’ introduced on 14th September affects the number of people arriving and being together in the hall, but not the socially distanced capacity. We are therefore able to continue hosting events of up to a maximum of 30 people with social distancing between individuals or household bubbles. It is important to note that in order to keep the hall open it is essential that everyone attending events follows the guidance of the hirer’s risk assessment and the supplementary terms and conditions for Covid-19 mitigation. AGM We have decided to postpone the village hall AGM (which is due in October) until some later date when restrictions have eased. The annual reports from the Chairman and the Treasurer will be published in the next Chideock News as usual. Photography competition The judging of the photography competition has been completed, and the winner is David Brown with his photograph of the ‘Dylan’ tree on Doghouse Hill. The runners up are Daisy Daniel with a picture of Seatown and Golden Cap, Stephen McHugo with an image of Swiss Cottage at dusk and Bill Harrington with a photograph of The George taken shortly after it reopened this year.

Chideock Parish Council intends to resume in-person monthly meetings in the Village Hall, with the first meeting at 10 am on Tuesday 29 September. The Parish Council will follow the COVID-19 instructions issued by the Village Hall Management Committee, together with 2 metre social distancing and the wearing of face coverings.

Stay Alert and Keep Safe Broadband in Chideock Parish. Penny Syddall, (Communications Team Leader, Digital Place, Digital and Change, Dorset Council), phoned the Clerk about Chideock broadband and subsequently sent an e-mail summarising the conversation: -

“Cllr Simon Christopher asked me to email you to update you on the broadband situation in Chideock. The picture is generally very good in Chideock, with the vast majority of premises in the village itself able to get a good superfast service. This was provided by Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) technology earlier in our contracts with Openreach. Much more recently – last year – the latest contract provided Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) technology to North Chideock. These residents now have the opportunity to connect to gigabit-capable lines, giving them some of the fastest speeds available to any homes anywhere in the UK. It would be helpful to us if you could ensure they know they are in this fortunate position and perhaps also encourage them to take a service as higher take-up provides additional funds into the programme, allowing us to go further elsewhere. We have further work to do in our current contract in Seatown. This additional FTTP work is planned for 2021 or 2022. Currently not quite all the homes in Seatown are in our plans to be covered – but Openreach will look again at all the premises when they plan the work in detail so the omitted ones may be brought into scope at that stage. The clump of houses at Willowhayne Farm at the bottom of Doghouse Lane are also in plans for future work. In my conversation with you, you mentioned that you have been told that the FTTC box on the A35 is full, so people cannot take a service. I will check up on this capacity issue and let you know the expected wait time. As I explained, sometimes these can be resolved quite quickly with just an extra card in the existing box, while sometimes a whole new box needs to be added to the side or beside the existing one which can take several months.” …/

Obstruction of any watercourse / ditch etc. Owners of land adjacent to a watercourse are responsible for ensuring that vegetation or other material from their land does not in any way impede water flow. This is to ensure that the watercourse fulfils its purpose as a drain, which reduces flood risk to the property, neighbours, and other residents of the parish. The Parish Council asks all landowners to conduct regular inspections of their watercourse boundary and to ensure that no material of any kind is allowed to fall into the watercourse and that overhanging vegetation etc., is cut and removed from the area. Such action will help to reduce the risk of flooding in our community. Casual Vacancy. Roger Carey has resigned from the Parish Council after 7 years of service, including 3 as Chairman. He will be missed by his fellow councillors and the Clerk, and we all wish him well for the future. Dorset Council has been informed of the vacancy and the necessary notice has been put on the Parish Council notice board and website and the Chideock and Seatown Community website. As usual, if 10 electors request an election (deadline 24 September) than an election will be called, otherwise the vacancy may be filled by co-option. If an election is called, a poll will not take place until 6 May 2021, as a result of the Local Government and Police and Crime Commissioner (Coronavirus) (Postponement of Elections and Referendums) (England and Wales) Regulations 2020 and the Coronavirus Act 2020. The Government has indicated that the situation will be kept under review, and if safe to do so, further legislation will be laid that will permit casual vacancy elections and referendums sooner than the 6 May 2021. If this is the case Dorset Council will publish a revised notice. If an election is held it will cost the Parish in excess of £2,000. If there is another election on the same date the cost will be reduced due to shared use of the hall and of staff. All-Weather All-Purpose Path Between Chideock and Symondsbury / Bridport. …/

Chideock Parish Council is grateful to Mr Winston Maskell for taking this matter up and will support him in his efforts to take it forward and get a commitment for its funding and construction. The initial proposal for a path to the north of the A35 was made in 1998 but failed due to land ownership issues between Quarr Lane and the London Inn. Three attempts were then made to get an all-weather foot path to the south of the A35, from the eastern end of Broadmead to join up with existing public rights of way near Eype. HA were willing to fund the construction (£350,000 was promised) and DCC offered a substantial grant of £50,000 (no longer available). Planning application 1/D/08/001841 was submitted but got bogged down due to uncertainty about ownership of a small part of an existing Right of Way and was automatically withdrawn because no decision has been reached in 2 years. The ownership issue was resolved, application 1/D/11/000104 was submitted and planning permission was granted in March 2011. But the Highways Agency refused permission for the work to be started due to the impending Olympics. That planning permission lapsed and application WD/D/15/000367 was submitted which included additional work to improve the entrance to the Frogmore Farm, at the request of the farm owner. This application was again automatically withdrawn because no decision has been reached in 2 years. HA now said that it would be too expensive to take forward because of the additional work to the Frogmore entrance. Mr and Mrs Coates have indicated that they support such a path across their land from the Park Farm entrance to Quarr Lane i.e. to the parish boarder. All the above applications were for an all-weather FOOT path i.e. no bicycles, horses etc. The current "ambition" is for an all-weather all-purpose path. What3Words. To find you more easily in an emergency, many UK Emergency Services are encouraging you to use the 3 word address for your location. These include Dorset Police, Dorset & Wiltshire Fire & Rescue, the South Western Ambulance Service, and the Coastguard. What is what3words? what3words has divided the globe into 3m squares and given each one a unique 3 word address. It means everywhere can be located with just three words. what3words is available as a free app for iOS and Android smart phones. You can find out more about what3words at https://what3words.com/about-us/. How do I use what3words in an emergency?

• Find the 3 word address for your current location on the free what3words app for iOS and Android. It works offline – ideal for areas with unreliable data connection.

• Share your 3 word address over the phone to the call handler. • The emergency service can then coordinate a response directly to the

exact location where help is needed. It can also be used to report incidents to organisations such as Wessex Water, Western Power Distribution, the Environmental Agency etc. Derek Moore A very big 'Thank you' to all my dear friends in Chideock, for phone calls, cards and messages of sympathy when Derek died. Doreen Moore TRADING STANDARDS … Look out for possible Green Energy Grant scams A government Green Homes Grant for homeowners in England is available from the end of September 2020 and runs until the end of January 2021. It aims to help pay for certain energy efficient home improvements including insulation. All homeowners can apply for funding for at least two thirds of the cost of eligible home improvements, up to a total value of £5,000. Some homeowners will qualify for the total cost of eligible home improvements, costing up to £10,000. You must install either insulation, or low-carbon heating, of certain types to qualify. Funding is by Government voucher and to start with you need to make sure you are eligible for the scheme. Full details of the Green Homes Grant can be found by phoning 0800 444202 or at the Government endorsed web page https://www.simpleenergyadvice.org.uk/ . History has shown that unscrupulous traders may try to take advantage of schemes such as this, perhaps contacting people by phone, or on the doorstep,

Trading Standards (continued) … out of the blue, with the offer of discounted insulation or building work. Sometimes the sales talk may refer to previous work completed at the property. Traders may try to push the need for urgency as a selling point, the official scheme being a time limited offer. The advice from trading standards is to visit the Simple Energy Advice webpage, or phone them on the number above, before you agree to any work starting so you know whether you are eligible for the grant and what that entitles you to. If you are unsure whether an approach by a trader is genuine perhaps ask for the help of a trusted relation, friend or neighbour. If you believe you have been contacted by, or have had work completed by, a trader who is not what they first seemed, then please report them to Dorset Council Trading Standards by contacting the Citizens Advice Consumer Service at https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer or by calling the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on freephone 0808 223 1133.

Government Announce Results of their RIS2 Consultation As many villagers are probably aware the Government has now published its Road Investment Strategy 2 (RIS2) which lays out their budget for spending on improvements to Strategic Highways and Trunk Roads throughout the UK for the period 2020 - 2025. CWBG are disappointed to see that this does NOT include any money for upgrading the A35 Strategic Highway which is the road that causes our Village so many problems. CBWG still believes that a discreet Chideock-only relief road (route to be agreed by DfT) remains a viable short term solution and indeed the only way of solving ALL the many traffic related problems associated with the A35 passing through the centre of Chideock including the illegal levels of air pollution at the western end of the village. Therefore CBWG will continue to pursue this course with all relevant bodies. Thank you for your continuing support Chideock Bypass Working Group THANK YOU I want to send my appreciation to Sue, Jane and Frances for so quickly organising a help network. My sincere thanks to all the volunteers and also to local shops for their help. Alison, Bay Tree House
