It’s hard to resist the conclusion that the basic purpose of Jesus’ preaching was not to enlighten us but to show us awake, to rock us out of the comfortable tramlines of our habitual existence and get us to face another way.

Hymn 175 Forty days and forty nights

Forty days and forty nights you were fasting in the wild, forty days and forty nights tempted, and yet undefiled:

The Silence of Lent silence is kept

burning heat throughout the day, bitter cold when light had fled, prowling beasts around your way, stones your pillow, earth your bed.

Should not we your trials share, learn your discipline of will, and with you by fast and prayer wrestle with the powers of hell?

So if Satan, pressing hard, soul and body would destroy, Christ who conquered, be our guard; give to us the victor’s joy.

Saviour, may we hear your voice— keep us constant at your side; and with you we shall rejoice at the eternal Eastertide.

The Collect of the Day Presider Almighty God, All whose Son fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are but did

not sin, give us grace to discipline ourselves in submission to your Spirit, that as you know our weakness, so we may know your power to save; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Proclamation of the Word

The Readings

Genesis: 9: 8-17 read by Kitty Graham Reader

A reading from the Book of Genesis. 8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, 9 “As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. 11 I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.”

Refrain 4Make me to know your ways, O Lord; teach me your paths. 5Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long. 6Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. 7Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me for your goodness’ sake, O Lord!

Holy Gospel read by Andrew Federle Gospeller The Lord be with you. Mark 1: 9-15 People And also with you. Gospeller The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. People Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Reader 9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.” 12 And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. 13 He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. 14 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”

Motet I Himmelen Grieg

In heaven, in heaven where God, our Lord is living, how blissful to get there, how great is the joy. For ever, ever we shall there see God in the Light, as he is, see the Lord of hosts.

And the body, the body which was laid down in black earth, there becomes so shining, yea, like the pure gold, and knows no more of any wound, as face to face it beholds God the Lord of hosts.

And the soul gets its ornament: the Crown that is promised, the bridal crown of justice, and then the white robe. O God! What bliss to be near to thee, to behold thee in the light, as thou art, thou, Lord of hosts!

The Creed please stand Presider Do you believe and trust in God the Father? People I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all

that is, seen and unseen.

Presider Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? People I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the

Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

Presider Do you believe and trust in the saving work of Jesus Christ? People For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate by the Holy

Spirit of the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under

Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the

right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the

dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

8

Presider Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? People I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the

Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one

baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and

the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Prayers of the People led by Donald Holmes please stand, sit or kneel. As we gather in God’s presence, let us pray to the Lord, saying, “Lord in Your mercy,

hear our prayer.”

Leader Lord in Your mercy, All Hear our prayer.

Leader Lord, as we enter into this time of Lent we ask for Your guidance and strength to resist the temptations that would lead us astray. You alone know our struggles and weaknesses. We offer these to You now in silence or aloud, asking that You remove their power so we may stay true to Your path and know Your glory.

Leader Lord in Your mercy, All Hear our prayer.

Leader Lord, On this weekend dedicated to family, we thank You for our local and global Christian family. Thank You for those both near and far who make you their guiding light and focus that we might learn from them and be fortified by their example. Silently or aloud we thank You for our brothers and sisters in Christ alive with us today, and for those who have moved on to Your greater glory.

Leader Lord in Your mercy, All Hear our prayer.

Leader Lord, we offer to You the cares and concerns of a broken world, knowing that where there is joy, You are there. Where this is pain, You are there, and where this is unity or discord, You are there. We ask that You open our hearts that we might feel Your presence in all moments and in all places. In the silence of our hearts or aloud, we offer these cares and concerns before You now.

Leader Lord in Your mercy, All Hear our prayer.

Leader Lord, As more and more of Your children struggle with anxiety and despair, shape us, Your community, to be instruments of peace, forgiveness, healing and hope. Teach us to make this, Your home, a place of refuge and calm. Silently or aloud, let us offer before our Lord, those in need of God’s unconditional and ever-constant presence and love.

Leader Lord in Your mercy, All Hear our prayer. Amen.

The Celebration of the Eucharist

During the following hymn, we are joined in worship by our youth and children. Our children bring up the bread and wine to set the table for Communion, our family meal. At the Lord’s Table, Christ is the host and we are the guests. We also take up a financial offering to nurture God’s kingdom among our people and beyond our walls. A growing number of us contribute via Pre-Authorized Giving. Giving joyfully and freely to God’s work is one practical way that we are being transformed into a people of hope & confidence, humility & gratitude, wonder & curiosity, generosity & purpose. If you are visiting with us this morning, please feel no compulsion to give.

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found: was blind, but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved; how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed! The Lord has promised good to me, his word my hope secures; he will my shield and portion be as long as life endures. Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come; 'tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. When we've been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we'd first begun.

Prayer over the Gifts Presider God our refuge and our strength, People receive all we offer you this day, and through the death and resurrection of your

Son transform us to his likeness. We ask this in his name. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving please stand, sit or kneel.

Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you.

10

Presider Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Presider Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth, because you bid your faithful people to cleanse their hearts and to prepare with joy for the paschal feast; that reborn through the waters of baptism and renewed in the eucharistic mystery, we may be more fervent in prayer and more generous in the works of love. Therefore we raise our voices to you in praise to proclaim the glory of your name.

Sanctus 722, Picardy, arr. Wedd

All Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Presider Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in your tender mercy you gave your only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there, by his once and for all offering of himself, a full, perfect, and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. He instituted and in his holy gospel commands us to continue a perpetual memorial of his precious death until he comes again.

Hear us, O merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that we who receive this bread and wine according to your Son Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood.

On the night that Jesus was betrayed he took bread and, when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.

In the same way, after supper, Jesus took the cup and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

Accept through Jesus Christ, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; and as we eat and drink these holy gifts, grant by the power of the life-giving Spirit that we may be made one in your holy Church and partakers of the body and blood of your Son, that he may dwell in us and we in him: Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, Almighty Father, world without end. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer Presider As our Saviour taught us, let us pray, All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will

be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Communion All baptized persons are welcome at Christ’s table.
