How to use these lesson plans

This lesson plan packet contains the following:

Use the Book List to stock your classroom reading center and choose which books

you’ll read aloud during the apple theme.

The 1-page weekly lesson plan has ideas for center activities, read alouds,

whole group lessons, small group math lessons, small group science lessons, and small group literacy lessons.

The alternate lesson plan sheets are perfect for creating your own plans if

you teach a 4-day, 3-day, or 2-day preschool program. Simply grab the items you’d like and arrange them to the calendar that’s best suited for you. These sheets are editable – so you can type in the dates, days of the week, and activities. You can also just print the templates and handwrite your plans.

The daily lesson plans delve into the specifics of each lesson idea. Materials are

included along the top of each daily plan. The days of the week and dates on these sheets are editable.

The centers explanation has more information about each center activity. There

are 2 to 3 ideas for each center. Some teachers keep the same activities in each center for an entire week, while others like to change the activities a couple times a week.

You can pick and choose the activities that suit you and your classroom best. For example, maybe some of the small group ideas would be better done during your whole group time. You may decide to use some of the small group ideas during center time. Even though the plans are listed as one week, there are really enough activities to encompass an additional week or two if you incorporate non-themed activities.

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy Act Out the Book

Use the Palm Tree Printable or make your own larger version out of

construction paper. Put it in a sheet protector and attach it to your

teaching easel or other magnetic surface. As you read the story

together add each letter and act out the story.

Making Names Use letter manipulatives or the Chicka

Chicka Letter Cards to spell the names of the students in the class (or

at least those in the small group).

Optional: Record these names to use later for independent practice.

Small Group Science Small Group Math

Icy Fizzing Letters Make letters out of baking soda, and

then dissolve them with vinegar.

Alternatively, hide letters in balls of the baking soda (make them into “coconuts”). Dissolve those with vinegar to find hidden letters.

Counting Coconuts Use the plain tree printable, a set of

coconut manipulatives (i.e., brown buttons, pompoms, construction paper circles), and the counting cards in this pack to practice counting and number

recognition.

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy Graphing Names

Make a graph of the number of letters in everyone’s names on a large piece

of chart paper.

This could also be done in a small group using the Name Graphing Sheet.

Emergent Reader Print the emergent reader. Help kids write the names of family and friends

on the lines. Then draw a matching picture of each person on "top" of the

coconut tree.


Frozen Letter Excavation Freeze water and letter manipulatives in a container. Once frozen, remove letters from the icy tower. Dissolve using pipettes of water. Consider

adding salt, too.

Coconut Number Formation Use brown pompom or button “coconuts” to form numbers.

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy Alphabet Songs

Choose a few fun ABC songs to sing with the children. Even better, pick

some that the children can dance to, as well.

Letter Sorting Sort letters based on various

characteristics.


Coconut 5 Senses Exploration Children use all of their senses to

explore coconuts.

Coconut Tree Game Race to the top of the coconut tree

by rolling a die and moving up the tree.

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy Roll the Coconut Rhyming Game

Grab a real coconut or a brown ball to start this game. Children roll the ball to each other, calling out words that rhyme based on a teacher prompt.

Hidden Letters Draw a coconut tree outline. Add letters to the leaves using a white crayon. Have child paint over the leaves with watercolors to reveal

hidden letters.


Coconut Rolling Explore rolling coconuts down

different inclines. Use real coconuts or stand-ins (like balls or pompoms).

Letter Patterns Create a variety of patterns using magnetic letters or the printable

letters included here. Patterns can be based on letter name, color, or case.




Materials Read Aloud AlphaOops!

Whole Group Activity Small Group Literacy Magnetic Letter Matching Decide on a few letters of the

alphabet to work on with the class. Grab 2 to 5 of each of those letters. Place them on the teacher easel or

other magnetic surface. Have children come up and work together to match the letters to each other. Discuss the

letters’ names and sounds.

Letter-Sound Matching Work together to match letters to

items that start with that letter. Begin with a few letters at a time. Use items

already in the classroom or bring in special photos or props for the

activity.


Sink or Float Discuss if coconuts float, make a

prediction, and test it out. Use real coconuts or coconut manipulatives,

and letters.

Magnetic Letter Rainbow Sort letters by color, and then arrange

like a rainbow.





Centers

Arts & Crafts Watercolor resist painting – Draw a coconut tree with letters climbing up it (in crayon or pastels). Come back and paint over with watercolors. Stamp the coconut tree – Give kids a black and white palm tree printable and letter stamps. Let them add the ABCs and color their palm trees. Don't forget the coconuts.

Science Coconut exploration – Explore coconuts with the 5 senses. Record observations on paper or in a science journal. Smelling bottles – Place a cotton ball in the bottom of a jar. Put a few drops of different extracts on each cotton ball. Make sure at least 2 are coconut extract.

Pretend Play

Chicka Chicka Small World – Use a tub or tray to create a small world based on the book. Add magnetic letters or other alphabet manipulatives to the tray. Add a few Styrofoam cones to act as the tree (you could add foam leaves to the top). Children read the book together and tell the story with the letters.

Literacy Letter sorting – Sort the printable cards, grouping all of the same letters together. Letter threading – Cut palm leaves out of green felt. Clip a slit into each and write a letter on them. Use a brown piece of ribbon to act as the tree “trunk”. Children can thread the leaves onto the ribbon. Refer to this post for a similar idea.

Centers

Math Number cards – Use the printable cards to explore number concepts. Children can count, put them in numerical order, etc. Add some brown pompom “coconuts” for one-to-one correspondence practice. Dice game – Roll the die and color in the appropriate number on the black and white dice game sheet. Laminate the color version and cover the numbers with “coconut” pompoms.

Sensory Chicka Chicka sensory bin – Add letter manipulatives and brown pom pom coconuts to the sensory material of your choice (green rice, colored shredded paper, sand). Alphabet sensory bottles – Add a sensory material of your choice to a clean bottle, along with alphabet beads or other small letter manipulatives.

Building

Build a coconut tree – How tall can you make your coconut tree? Attach letter cards to blocks. See how tall kids can build a letter tree before it tumbles over.

Fine Motor

Coconut transfer – Add alphabet stickers to the outside of a clean, empty bottle. Place a bowl of brown pompom “coconuts” next to the bottle, along with child-friendly tweezers. Children use the tweezers to add the pompoms to the bottle.
