Christina miller, a fifth grade grove avenue student, submitted an essay to the annual DAR American History Es-say contest hosted by the Signal Hill Chapter DAR. Judged for historical context, adherence to the theme “The Lives of Children During the American Revolution”, grammar, and originality, Miller’s essay took first place in her division. “I en-joyed writing the essay because I got to see what it [was] like to be a child in the Revolutionary War," said Miller. “I learned that life was very different and difficult compared to today.”

Barrington Bandits Softball Team Competes in Colorado National TournamentduRing theiR FiFth and Final season PlaYing togetheR as the Barrington Bandits, eleven 14-year-old girls traveled in early July with their families to Triple Crown Sports’ Colorado Sparklers Junior tournament near Denver, the largest national softball tournament of its kind.

“As the only youth softball team ever in the history of Bar-rington Youth Baseball/Softball (BYB/S) to play on the west coast for a national tournament, the Bandits were impressive with their ability to play with and defeat some of the best Cali-fornia/Texas/West Coast 14U teams in the country,” said Perry Peterson, the team’s Head Coach along with Coach and Team Manager Bob Sturgis and Coach Todd Jacobsen.

Because most teams at this level are regional teams that draw players from a widespread area, that Bandits’ success is even more impressive because all the girls come from District 220. Peterson said, “If the opponent knew we were all from one school, they would have been even more amazed!”

After playing 103 games throughout 2013-14, the team ended its season in July with a record 74-32-3, against some of the best competition in the region and country. With wins at tournaments in East Peoria, Elgin, Rosemont, West Chicago, Roselle, and Bar-rington, they received 4 national or regional bids over the season.

Coach Bob Sturgis, who formed the team with Todd Jacob-sen in 2009, is proud of the five years these girls have spent learning the sport of softball, as well as the friendships they and their families have formed. “Our showing at the Colorado national tournament is a great statement of the potential these girls have in high school,” he says. “Adding in whitewater rafting, many dinners together, shopping excursions, mountain trips, a
