as soft as butter. Babu also crocheted us slippers out of brightly colored yarn. They were lumpy and not the best to walk on but they were warm. Sometimes my toes would stick out through the yarn and I’d have to pull the slipper back out over them. Now dressed for bed, we would drift off to sleep in someone’s lap as the adults laughed and told stories. We would be so sound asleep that we didn’t wake up as blankets were wrapped around us and our parents and grandfather carried us to our own house.

I can recall opening a sleepy eye on one of those walks home in the cold night and snuggling deeper into my father or my grandfather’s shoulder for the three or four minute walk. Christmas Eve would end as my sisters and

I were put in our beds, cer-tainly dreaming of Christmas morning to come.

Ron Gagliardi, Cheshire resident

Ping! Pop! Zap! “Honey, wake up, some-

body’s shooting up our apart-ment.” With those words, my wife shook me awake. I heard the explosions coming from our living room and warily stalked off to determine the cause, totally unarmed, and, of course, hoping I wasn’t about to find a gun-toting in-truder at the end of the hall.

Let me back up a few weeks. Christmas was com-ing and my young bride and I had decided to decorate a small pine tree with natural “ornaments.” We pressed and dried poplar leaves that had a fuzzy white coat on one side. We gathered sycamore seed balls and “velour-cov-

ered” seed pods from wiste-ria vines. (Strangely, we had spray painted some of these gifts of Nature with fluores-cent orange and green spray paint before hanging them on the first Christmas tree of our marriage.)

So, there I am, sneaking down our long hallway, still hearing the “explosions,” but starting to realize the sounds weren’t really gun-shots. Arriving in the living room and putting on the light, I could see that nothing was out of place. There was no apparent cause for the mid-dle-of-the-night volley.

My wife joined me and we started to conduct a more thorough search. Suddenly — ping — the noise happened again. We traced it to our “Natural Christmas tree in the corner.” And there were the culprits, the hanging, “ve-lour-covered,” wisteria seed

From Page 1 pods. It turns out that in real Nature, when the tempera-ture reaches a certain point for a particular period of time, the wisteria seed pods twist open, violently launch-

ing their one or two seeds, sending them speeding away from the mother plant to land many feet away, perhaps to

When it comes to gifts, presentation can be an im-portant factor, say local shops in the midst of the biggest gift-wrapping season of all.

“Sometimes it’s more im-portant than what’s inside the box,” said Sandra Brucato, a floral designer at The Flower Shop at Cheshire Nursery, and a master of gift-wrap-ping. “I think presentation is very important. The gift wrapping and decorating is for me, the most fun.”

To help spruce up your gift-wrapping skills, and make packages standouts this season, here are tips from lo-cal gift wrap wizards:

Anita Bruscino, owner of Elegant Touch Fine Gifts says, number one is organiza-tion. Work at a counter that’s a good height for you, and make sure you have the right equipment, wrappings and supplies, at hand. Neatness counts. If you’re wrapping a box, a nice crisp corner counts. To do that, it is crit-ical to cut to the right size. That just takes practice. Trim here and there to get the cor-rect length, and in that way get the corners right. It’s trial

and error really. If you choose not to trim, it’s hard to get a neat look.

To make your package re-ally special, there’s nothing better than a beautiful rib-bon. Invest in a good ribbon. If you can’t make a bow, don’t worry— the bow police aren’t watching. There’s no shame in buying a bow. To decorate this time of year, use orna-ments or pinecones, anything really. Use your hot glue gun to put them on the package. It makes a huge difference.

Laurie Acosta, Red Owl Gifts, says let your own cre-

ativity flow and “We like the natural look of raffia ribbon.” It’s quick, easy for beginners to use and makes a nice pre-sentation. You can pick it up anywhere. Chevron print is hot on everything this sea-son. It’s a fashion trend now being found on wrapping pa-pers, tissues, and gift tags.

Assistant Erica Carbone says putting tags on the pack-ages with your recipients name on it makes the pack-age more individualized, as well as festive.

A public hearing on the expansion of Marbridge Retirement Center on West Main Street was completed with no decision made by the Planning and Zoning Commission Dec. 9.

About 25 neighborhood residents attended to oppose the expansion and in some cases the existing facility.

Marbridge is a 25 unit res-idential care center that has

been on the site since 1969. The owner, Louis Bower, is seeking to expand to a total of 50 residents.

Ne i g h b o r h o o d r e s i -dents were opposed after Marbridge representatives presented changes to the plan based on complaints voiced at the last public hearing.

Architect, Matt Williams, explained to commissioners and the public how changes were added to assuage neigh-bors’ concerns.

A walkway around the

property was added, a six-foot tall metal fence on one side and a four-foot tall metal picket fence would surround the entire property, and 12 ad-ditional parking spaces were added.

Residents who spoke at the hearing said while they thought the changes were positive, they do not believe Marbridge belongs in the neighborhood.

“I don’t agree with the proj-ect at all. When I look out my living room window, I see Marbridge. When I look out my dining room window, I see Marbridge,” said neigh-bor, Rich Frappier. “The bot-tom line is it’s not a good idea. I’ll agree to knocking down the existing building and putting in something that’s reasonable.”

Another neighbor, Matt LaFrance, said despite the changes, he didn’t favor the expansion.

“I see a lot of positives, the things that have been ad-dressed tonight have been positive, but a facility, in my opinion at 20,000 square feet is still too large,” he said. “Property values will be affected and I still feel it does not belong in our neighborhood.”

La France’s wife, Erica LaFrance, agreed with him, adding that she is also con-cerned about Marbridge residents.

“The second concern is the supervision of the resi-dents. I see people with men-tal impairments, walking and talking to themselves. How can five or six staff members know where the residents are?” she said. “I don’t under-stand how the same number of people will be able to mon-itor them.”

Bower has said that no more than five or six staffers are working at any one time.

Neighbors said that al-though the traff ic pat-terns were approved by the Connecticut Department of Transportation and the Cheshire Police Department,

Scams targeting utility cus-tomers nationally continue to affect Connecticut Light & Power customers, with the most recent version targeting Spanish-speaking customers.

The scam involves prepaid “Green Dot” VISA credit cards.

Callers claiming to repre-sent CL&P may contact cus-tomers, telling them their service is scheduled to be shut off, then advising them to make a payment by pur-chasing an untraceable pre-paid debit “Green Dot” VISA

card. Customers are then asked to call another phone number where information is obtained from the credit card and the monetary value is re-moved from the “Green Dot” VISA card.

“If a customer gets a call of this nature, he or she can verify that it is CL&P by ask-ing for some basic informa-tion about the account. Our customer service represen-tatives will always be able to provide the name on the ac-count, the account address, and the exact past-due bal-

CL&P warns about green dot scamance,” said Penni Conner, Chief Customer Officer at Northeast Utilities, parent company of CL&P. “If the caller cannot provide that in-formation, the call is not from one of our employees.

Customers should not pro-vide any type of payment or financial information, and should call Customer Service immediately at 1-800-286-2000, and local law enforce-ment, to report the incident.

Customers who are sched-uled for disconnection due to nonpayment receive written notice that includes the ac-tions they can take to main-tain service. They can also find their account status, in-cluding the past-due balance, on www.cl-p.com, or by call-ing and using the company’s

automated phone system. CL&P does not require cus-tomers to purchase any type of pre-paid card to pay their bill. Customers have several payment options, including direct debit, credit card, and personal check.

It is important reminders for consumers to always re-main vigilant for potential fraud or identity theft, and protect their personal infor-mation. CL&P offers the fol-lowing tips:

· Don’t give out infor-mation such as your Social Security number, account number or mother’s maiden name unless it is truly neces-sary to complete a transaction and you have verified you are speaking with an authorized company representative.

· When using online and mobile technology, use pass-words that have at least eight characters and include numbers or symbols, and don’t give your passwords to anyone.

· Research online entities so you know who they are.

· Make sure you check your web browser and virus pro-tection software for updates regularly.

People needing vaccina-tions, physicals, health coun-seling and prescriptions can now go to a new walk-in

clinic at CVS, 905 S. Main St. The Cheshire Minute

Clinic, is the first for the town. The company runs 19 in the state. The first opened in 2006. Southington also has one in the 326 Main St. CVS,

according to the Minute Clinic website.

In Connecticut, the Minute Clinics are staffed by Nurse Practioners, who can give vaccinations, perform physi-cals, “diagnose, treat and pre-

scribe,” said Minute Clinic State Practice Manager Marleen McGuire.

The cl inics are not equipped to draw blood or take X-Rays, McGuire said, but the staff can perform many of the things that one would normally go to a doc-tor’s office for, like weight management, smoking cessa-tion, cholesterol and glucose level checks.

“We want people to de-velop a relationship with the nurse practitioner,” she said. “It helps to have somebody on your side in any area of health.”

Pharmacy clinics are part of a growing trend in health care and serve a need, ac-cording to Angela Mattie, Quinnipiac University’s chair of the department of health management.

“We as patients want the flexibility that fits in with our crazy, busy schedules,” she said. “There’s a demand from patients to have the flexibility that, coupled with the grow-ing shortage of primary care physicians, makes this the right option.”

Mattie added it also makes more sense for people to go to a walk-in clinic for care for minor things like sore throats, rather than to go to an emer-gency room at a hospital.

“It’s the right alternative,” she said. “It’s a much more appropriate use of resources.”

The clinics are open seven days a week and take all major insurance, includ-ing Medicare and Medicaid, McGuire said.

they can only treat patients ages 5 and up. Currently, in Connecticut, patients are equally divided among adults and children.

Though the clinics are sta-tioned in CVS stores, pre-scriptions can be filled at any pharmacy.

“We know pharmacy rela-tionships are really important to people,” McGuire said, The walk-in clinics in Cheshire and Southington are on a first-come, first-served basis, the website said.

“We are looking at having a texting component, so you can do your shopping and then come back,” McGuire said.

Patients are also referred out to doctors in the commu-nity when the need arises, she said.

McGuire added that the main focus of the clinics is not only to provide services on a walk-in basis, but to find out the needs of individual communities and address them.

“Our goal is to help people in communities,” she said. “To provide the services that are important to them.”

Faith

Father Bob was an inspiration I know the

time of the year it is, yet, u nde r t he guidance of the Cheshire Clergy Association, we decided to dedicate this month’s Clergy Corner to Rev. Robert Ricciardi, known affectionately as Fr. Bob. Fr. Bob was a humble,

boisterous, humor-full, very down-to-earth man of God who touched many lives in profound and eternal ways.

Fr. Bob Ricciardi, you are missed, and there is no re-placing you. Fr. Bob was one of those rare individuals who could be successful at what-ever they put their hands to. Bearing this in mind, Fr. Bob could have been a law-yer, doctor, investor, musi-cian, et cetera. But, Fr. Bob heard the call of God loud and clear and took the boldly courageous steps toward the servanthood ministry – the absolute best path not just for

him, but all of us whose lives he touched as a result of re-sponding positively to God’s invitation.

As the president of the Cheshire Clergy Association, I would see Fr. Bob now and then at our meetings. He was such a shepherd to the people he loved, that try as he might to make our meetings, he just couldn’t get away from show-ering the love he had for those under his charge. Having said that, however, many of us can recall with fondness how he seemed to relish be-ing a part of the Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve Service. I’ll never forget the expres-sion on his face at the first Thanksgiving Eve Service we had while he was pastor at St. Bridget’s R.C. It was the end of the service and he had been given the benedic-tion to pronounce. Before he

did, though, he wanted to let us all know about the condi-tion of the refreshments the bulletin promised us follow-ing worship. Fr. Bob said, “There ain’t none! Sorry!” in such a tone and affect that you could not help yourself but laugh along with him – there was never any room for disappointment with Fr. Bob. He went on to explain why there weren’t any, but by then, it was quite okay.

Now, here’s why I loved Fr. Bob – he had a way about him that simply by his pres-ence you felt the presence of God. He could bring people together. He brought heal-ing and hope. He brought heaven to earth and made it real to whomever he met. He will always be an in-spiration to me, and to all who were fortunate to have known him. He continues

to live on in the hearts of those who now, more than ever seek to emulate his style of humble leadership. He never thought of himself more highly than anyone he spoke with, and was always fully present with you in the moment. When Fr. Bob lis-tened to you, you were heard. He always had a smile for ev-eryone he ran into, no matter how he was feeling. We were all so blessed to have known such a rare and amazing man who served God with all of who he was.

We continue to pray for the congregants of the St. Bridget’s R.C. God be with you all, especially in this time of the church year.

they were concerned about the children waiting at school bus stops in the neighborhood.

Attorney Jeff Cugno, read a statement by Bower that said how disappointed he was that after making the changes they had that the project was still unaccept-

able to neighbors.“We’ve been in the plan-

ning stages for this for about a year and a half,” Cugno said.

Cugno added that despite comments about property values being lowered, there was no evidence that was accurate.

“There have been no re-cords of any complaints against Marbridge un-

til these hearings,” he said. “Frankly these complaints have been very insulting to the owners of Marbridge and the residents. We believe it’s the correct thing for the neighborhood.”

A decision on the proj-ect is expected to be made at the Planning and Zoning Commiss ion’s meet ing Jan. 14.

The school district is run-ning a $200,000 deficit, it was announced at the Dec. 12 Board of Education meeting.

“It’s mostly because of tui-tion for outplacement costs,” board member Tony Perugini told the board.

He added that they hoped to recoup the costs in May when the state looks into the situation.

“As a result, we have a freeze for discretionary accounts,” he said after

the meeting. The board voted unan-

imously to appoint Gerry Brittingham as chairman, Sandy Pavano as vice chair-woman and Marlena Soble as secretary.

School Superintendent Greg Florio, on behalf of the schools, recognized Brittingham for his work on Veterans Day events at the high school.

Also honored at the meet-ing were high school coaches of the year: Eileen Gallagher for field hockey and Sue Pavone for volleyball.

WA L L I N G F O R D - Mozzicato DePasquale Bakery and Pastry Shop is

set to open its third location on North Colony Road today.

Mozzicato is a fami-ly-owned bakery and pastry shop offering traditional pas-tries and desserts, such as cannolis and Italian cookies, as well as wedding cakes and breads.

Rino Mozzicato and his wife, Gisella, opened their first pastry shop on Franklin Avenue in Hartford in 1973. In 1975, the couple purchased DePasquale Bakery, also in Hartford, and added it to their operation, according to the Mozzicato’s website.

According to the web-site, the Hartford-based bak-ery expanded in 1978, which is when Mozzicato Caffe was founded. To support its growth, the Mozzicatos ren-ovated the bakery to increase retail and production space.

In 2001, the bakery opened its second pastry shop in Plainville.

The Route 5 location, a for-mer KFC restaurant build-ing at 731 N. Colony Road, was sold to the bakery in June. Contractors have spent months working and rede-signing the building to trans-

form the former fried chicken restaurant into a pastry and dessert shop.

The outside of the build-ing no longer features the red and white stripes of the KFC brand, but light brown bricks with a large “Mozzicato DePasquale Bakery and Pastry Shop” sign.

With a new tile floor and glass cases ready to display the cannolis, Italian cakes and cookies, the storefront resembles a pastry shop. In addition to traditional Italian pastries, Mozzicato’s will also offer customers pizza, ge-lato and even calzones, Rino Mozzicato said.

“We were planning on opening earlier,” said Rino Mozzicato. “We’ve been working diligently to make it look good.”

Rino Mozzicato, who played a key role in expand-ing into Plainville, said a Wallingford bakery allows the business to better service its customers.

“The people on the Wallingford-Cheshire line will come here, and the peo-ple on the Southington line will come to Plainville,” Rino Mozzicato explained. “We’ll be able to service more clients.”

Doreen DeSarro, the busi-ness recruiter for the town’s Economic Development Commission, said she was looking forward to the opening.

“I can’t wait,” she said. “It’s going to be a plus for Wallingford ... They’ll do very well in town and I think people will really appreciate what they have to offer.”

Larry Hurowitz, owner of Fran’s Pastry Shoppe on East Center Street, said he hopes there will be plenty of busi-ness in town and in the area for the numerous shops and bakeries.

“The bakery business isn’t what it used to be,” said Hurowitz, who has been in the pastry business for over 30 years.

“Now, you can go into Stop & Shop or Walmart and buy something. It’s not the same.”

Tales

start a new vine. Our wisteria pods were all split apart and our apartment was littered with their nickel-sized seeds. We enjoyed a good laugh and went back to bed.

We’ve told the story often at family gatherings in the 44 years since then, the story of our exploding Christmas tree.

Joy VanderLek, The Cheshire Citizen

As surely as we will create new experiences and make new memories each holi-day, it’s also true that around this time of year, vivid mem-

From Page 2 ories rush back to us, to fill our minds and remind us of all the truly memorable hol-idays past spent with friends and family. For instance, my husband talks about mak-ing sugar cookies during the winter holidays, first with his grandmother ... then with his mother ... then by himself ... and finally with his own child, his daughter.

One of my own most favor-ite holiday memories was the Christmas I received an un-expected present. Not only did my husband suddenly “remember” the gift from its hiding place under the couch, but it was the very painting I had admired for better than a year, at a restaurant we fre-quented. It was a terrific sur-prise, and one I will never

forget.

Dawn Cestaro, Cheshire Hollow Farm

When I was growing up my uncle would sleep on our couch on Christmas Eve. He was our favorite Uncle (Richard). On Christmas morning my sisters and I would be waiting, looking out the windows onto our long driveway, for our grandpar-ents to arrive with our other Uncle (Paul). Gifts in hand seemingly too big and bulky to carry would end up filling our living room.

Coming from an Italian family, my mother would be mostly in the kitchen pre-paring the feast listening to us ask endlessly when will it be time to eat. Delicious

smells and Christmas mu-sic filled the air. As kids we just wanted to dig into those presents and eat all the once-a-year food that we could! We had such a sweet grand-mother. She would be over-whelmed with emotions and

cry opening her gifts. Those are my Christmas

childhood memories. I wish I could look out the window and see my grandparents pulling in the driveway now. (They are looking down and watching, I’m sure.)

The Cheshire Symphony Orchestra is looking for oboe, viola and violin players who are able to play advanced repertoire. Orchestral ex-perience is preferred but not required.

The Cheshire Symphony Orchestra is composed of stu-dents and professionals from diverse fields including med-icine, scientific research, and education. Musicians come from Cheshire and many sur-rounding communities and volunteer their efforts to work with a professional con-ductor on challenging and ac-cessable programming.

Rehearsals are scheduled for Monday nights from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Dodd Middle School. For more informa-tion, call Cary Jacobs at (203) 915-1568 or Sue Lonergan at (203) 651-9074 and leave a message.

Cutting down a fresh tree at a local farm is a central part of the winter holidays for many families. However, some opt for artificial trees. Newly cut trees can be messy, shedding their nee-dles and sometimes even dying before Christmas day. Fake trees are less hassle and a better choice. But the smell of fresh plastic isn’t exactly in the holiday spirit.

“I love the smell of a fresh Christmas tree… I just don’t get the same feeling with a fake one,” said Dawn Cestaro of Cheshire Hollow Farm.

“I think it’s more about the process of picking a tree,” said Tami Fagan of Rocky

Hill, “WalMart isn’t quite the same.”

“It doesn’t matter what you have in your house,” said Kate Rich, “[The picking] is tradition.”

But there are some finer points to consider when it comes to tree selection.

“Cutting down your own tree doesn’t necessarily mean it’s fresher,” Cestaro said, adding, “That’s a com-mon misconception.” Pre-cut trees shipped from Canada may be the best option. The trees are cut down after they go dormant due to the cold weather far-ther north. Due to their dormancy, the trees may last longer than freshly cut trees – possibly through Valentine’s Day.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Cheshire Police Department, Richard Chevrolet, victims of alco-hol-related crashes and lo-cal politicians met Dec. 12 to kick-off a safe 2013 holi-day season.

At this event, the 2012 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration DUI Statistics were released. This showed that overall there was 10,322 people killed from drunk driving crashes, a 4.6 percent increase from 2011. In Connecticut, there was a 9 percent decrease in people killed, from 94 in 2011 to 85 in 2012.

Representatives also re-minded citizens to plan ahead for the holiday season for a designated non-drink-ing driver if they are plan-

ning to drink alcohol during the holiday season’s festivities.

MADD red ribbons were handed out as part of its annual Tie One On For Safety campaign. Drivers are urged to display a red ribbon on their cars as a reminder to plan ahead for a designated non-drink-ing driver, and in support of law enforcement crack-down efforts during the holiday season.

Also announced was the planning of the first annual Cheshire Walk Like MADD scheduled for April 5, 2014 in memory of Gregory Schena who was killed on May 12, 2010 by a drunk driver. Greg’s parents Mary Ellen and Richard Schena were in attendance to talk about their son who was a Cheshire resident, Wallingford teacher and

assistant Cheshire High School football coach. They said they are grateful to be able to keep Greg’s memory alive through events, such as this walk, and look for-ward to having a big team.

In attendance were Jason Vianese, general manager of Richard Chevrolet and Chief Neil Dryfe of the Cheshire P o l i c e D e p a r t m e n t , Town Manager Michael Milone, state Sen. Dante

Bartolomeo, state represen-tatives Al Adinolfi, Mary Fritz and Lezlye Zupkus as well as the Schenas and Pam Bingman, whose brother was killed in a drunk driv-ing crash.

CHESHIRE — Cheshire took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter on a Missy Bailey free throw and then held off rival Hand down the stretch for a 48-41 SCC inter-divisional victory in the sea-son opener for both schools Dec. 11.

Bailey, a senior captain, scored a game-high 24 points, including four 3-pointers all in the first half and four free throws late in the game.

“Especially for our first game, to be tested like that, with decision making at the end, I thought our three se-niors came through, kept us calm, made good decisions,” Cheshire coach Sarah Mik said. “Sara Como comes in and hits the free throws. I know we were 9-of-23, but we made them when we wanted to sway the momentum. You never know how a team’s go-ing to respond in that situa-tion and I’m so proud they handled it in that way for Game 1.”

Como (9 points, 7 re-bounds) made those two free throws in the last minute as the Rams kept Hand at bay.

Bailey’s free throw with 5:58 left in the game gave

Cheshire a lead it would never give up as Hand scored only three points the rest of the way.

Hand, which shot well in the first half, had trouble in the second as Cheshire picked up its defense and re-bounding. The Tigers scored only 13 second-half points, in-cluding one field goal in the fourth.

“We switched a couple things up,” Mik said.

“We’ve known in the past they have very good shooters. So we were able to at least stop that and get our hands on the rebounds in the sec-ond half.”

Cheshire also got its hands on Hand’s shots.

Junior Jill Howard had six blocks to go along with five rebounds and four points, and as a team the Rams made seven steals.

Cheshire led at 12-11 late in the first quarter, but Hand came on and scored five points, four on two Sophie Joel (6 points, 6 rebounds) layups to take a 16-12 lead at the end of the quarter.

Cheshire chased Hand in the second quarter, but the Tigers maintained a 28-24 lead at the half behind six second-quarter points from Cassidy Wygonik (6 points, 6

rebounds).The Rams went ahead 37-36

after three, paced by Bailey’s eight points, mostly on drives to the basket, only to give up the lead, 38-37, at the start of the fourth when Lily Taylor (9 points) scored on a layup. But Bailey’s free throw a min-ute later set the tone for the rest of the game.

Lauren Brandau finished

with a team-high 10 points for Hand.

“In the first half, we relied on (Bailey’s outside shoot-ing). Bry (McIntosh) was the only one to get to the foul line,” Mik remarked. “So we said, ‘We can’t live and die by the three, we’ve got to start looking at other angles,’ then (Bailey) started to drive a lit-tle bit more.”

McIntosh finished five points, five rebounds and three steals.

Three Connecticut state high school football champi-ons were crowned this past weekend. The fourth, and fi-nal, champ is slated to be de-

termined Thursday, Dec. 19.Class SNEW BRITAIN -- Almost

as soon as it had begun, it was all over.

Ansonia snagged two take-aways on Woodland’s first two offensive plays and con-

verted both into touchdowns as the Chargers claimed the Class S championship with a 51-12 victory over the Hawks on a frigid Friday night at Central Connecticut State University’s Arute Field.

Ansonia (15-0) became the first team in Connecticut his-tory to play and win 15 games. The Chargers also won their record 19th state champion-ship--including their third straight--and extended their winning streak to 43 games.

Woodland (12-3) dug it-self a hole right off the bat as Tanner Kingsley’s first pass wobbled into the arms of Tyler Bailey for an inter-ception. Arkeel Newsome cashed in on the turnover with a 6-yard touchdown run to make it a 7-0 lead less than 3 minutes into the game.

On the Hawks’ first play of their next drive, Bailey crashed in on Jack Pinho to force a fumble after Pinho caught a short pass. Witold Gul scurried down from his safety spot and completed the scoop-and-score with a 27-yard runback for a 14-0 lead.

Woodland clawed its way back into the game with a pair of defensive stops and a solid drive to open the second quarter. Tanner Kingsley hit Joe Poeta with a 37-yard strike to get the Hawks into the red zone, and Kingsley popped a 14-yard run on the next play to make it a 14-6 game with

Woodland got, though, as Newsome added touchdown runs of 2 and 8 yards later in the quarter to make it a 28-6 lead. Between those scores came Bailey’s second inter-ception of Kingsley, this one in the end zone, to end the Hawks’ momentum.

Newsome concluded his record-setting career with 259 yards and four touch-downs on 34 carries. He also threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Tom Majchrzak in the fourth quarter.

Newsome sits atop record charts for all-time rushing yards (10,672) and touch-downs (187).

Class MNEW BRITAIN - For the

third time in the last five sea-sons the St. Joseph Cadets are

state champions, rolling over Brookfield, 54-8, Saturday at Central Connecticut State University’s Arute Field.

Musfasha Abdul Basir rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns, all in the first half, leading the way for the Cadets in the snowy conditions.

St. Joseph’s quarterback Jordan Vazzano started the game off throwing two in-complete passes. He then completed his last five passes, four of them for touchdowns.

Canaan’s Alex LaPolice re-turned the kickoff 61 yards to start Saturday’s CIAC Class L championship.

LaPolice’s play set the tone the rest for the game for the

Rams. They scored on that drive and went on to rout Darien, 44-12, to win the pro-gram’s ninth CIAC state title at Boyle Stadium and atoned for a Thanksgiving Day loss to their rival.

The fourth-seeded Rams f inished 14-1 and also won the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference title.

It was a CIAC state-record ninth state championship for coach Lou Marinelli.

Senior Nick Cascione com-pleted 14 of 24 passes for 226 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Rams. He also ran 11 times for 76 yards and a score.

LaPolice had four catches for 86 yards and a touchdown and also scored on a 43-yard punt return.

Frank Cognetta ran 12 times for 68 yards and a score for New Canaan and Cole

Zach Allen deflected a pass at the line of scrimmage,
