Celebrate Europe’s number 1 summer school for guitar, drums and voice at the stunning Park campus in Cheltenham. Our workshops cover rock, blues, classical, funk, jazz, acoustic and fingerstyle. Yes, we have moved from Bath!

The big news is that we have a new home. We travelled the length and breadth of the UK in search of the ideal campus to relocate the famous IGF summer school and we are delighted to announce that we found the perfect place. The Park Campus of the University of Gloucestershire is located in the beautiful spa town of Cheltenham.

As usual we have a fantastic line-up of workshops, masterclasses and concerts presenting some of the best-established and emerging guitarists in the world.

On page 22, you can find early details for our Ministry of Guitar youth rock camp series in London, Gateshead and Bath.

The IGF Classical Summer School has featured many great artists from the Assad brothers to John Williams and this year is no exception. Tom Kerstens is a major figure in guitar music today: a versatile performer on modern and period instruments and one of the most

influential champions of the guitar’s cause as a performer, recording artist and festival director. Since 1995, Tom Kerstens has led the IGF as Artistic Director, bringing with him a passion for the guitar’s heritage and a genuine commitment to its future having commissioned over 70 new works for guitar from many leading composers. Tom has released eight highly-acclaimed CDs and his latest recordings include GOYA, the music of Enrique Granados and UTOPIA, new music by Joby Talbot and John Metcalfe performed with his G Plus Ensemble and released on Peter Gabriel’s Real World label in March 2010. www.tomkerstens.com

Amanda Cook is one of the leading guitarists of her generation. She has appeared in the USA, South America and throughout Europe. In the UK she has performed at the Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall, Sage Gateshead and King’s Place. She has broadcast on radio and TV, having performed live and been interviewed on BBC Radio 3 and Woman’s Hour. She currently teaches at the Guildhall School of Music, is a Patron of the Federation of Guitar Societies and regularly gives masterclasses and adjudicates. www.amandacook.co.uk

The classical guitar week consists of open classes for early stage, intermediate and advanced students. With the help of professional tutors, students will explore new repertoire, expand technical ability and improve performance confidence. There will also be an opportunity to join a series of masterclasses and additional afternoon activities with lectures, small ensemble coaching sessions and guitar orchestra.

Students attending the summer school will be able to book private lessons with the classical guests artists and tutors.

David Russell GRAMMY award winner David Russell is one of the giants of the classical guitar today. His beautifully polished and refined playing have combined to make him a hero to young guitarists all over the world. In recognition of his great talent and his international career, he was named a Fellow of The Royal Academy of Music in London in 1997. His concert and masterclass represents a rare visit to the UK. Students wanting to attend David’s masterclass should book early to avoid disappointment.

Nigel North British lutenist Nigel North has been sharing music with audiences for nearly 30 years. Through his outstanding virtuosity as soloist, accompanist and ensemble musician, Nigel has inspired a generation. His quiet passion and artistry have produced benchmark recordings and performances, such as “Bach on the Lute” recorded on Linn Records. For over 20 years Nigel was Professor of Lute at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, in London. He has also held prestigious teaching positions at the Hochschule der

Künste, the Royal Conservatory in Den Haag, Netherlands, and more recently at the Early Music Institute, Indiana University, Bloomington in the USA. This is a very rare teaching appearance by a truly inspirational artist.

Scott TennantScott Tennant is one of the world's most recognized American guitarists. He is the author of the best-selling book and video on guitar technique, Pumping Nylon, and he is a founding member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, which is now well into its second decade as a groundbreaking ensemble. Their album "Guitar Heroes" won a 2005 Grammy award in the "Best Classical Crossover" category. His performances both as a soloist and with the LAGQ have taken him all over the world several times over. He is in the process of recording the complete solo guitar works of Joaquin Rodrigo for the Belgian label GHA, which will include Rodrigo's guitar concertos with Leo Brouwer conducting. Whilst not performing and recording Scott devotes his time to teaching, and is on the faculty of the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music.

Level 2 Acoustic Echoes- Popular Strumming with Tristan Seume

Just want to strum? This fun but intensive course will focus on the acoustic guitar as an accompaniment to the voice, looking at artists as diverse as Jeff Buckley, John Martyn and The Beatles, to popular contemporary artists such as Coldplay, KT Tunstall, Jose Gonzalez, David Gray and Fleet Foxes. We will look at strumming, rhythm, muting and finger picking, as we prepare for the student concert at the end of the week. Students are also encouraged to bring either their own work or covers they would like to be looked at in class.

Level 3/4 Progressive Fingerstyle with Clive Carroll and special guest Tommy Emmanuel

Inspired by the ever-increasing popularity of fingerstyle music, IGF have invited two of the world’s leading players to coach advanced and intermediate students through a unique week of exciting music and technical wizardry. Clive is a master of altered tunings, so expect to explore a wide -range of different tunings, picking techniques, percussive sounds and arrangements from the world of fingerstyle guitar. Clive is joined by Australian legend Tommy Emmanuel, an exceptional fingerpicker Tommy will join Clive for a special day dedicated to his love of music inspired by the his passion for the great American fingerpickers. Both the fingerstyle and acoustic workshops take the form of open classes for early stage, intermediate and advanced students. Your tutor will help you to explore new music, expand your technical ability and improve your performance confidence. A large part of the course will lead up to the student showcase concert which is open to the general public. Students are encouraged to take part either as soloists or in groups. There will also be many opportunities for students of all abilities to perform in an informal setting at open mic sessions in the Students Union or under a tree in the beautiful grounds of the Cheltenham Park Campus. Q: What is the difference between fingerstyle and acoustic? A: Fingerstyle refers to a style of playing, usually on an acoustic guitar, that centres around finger picking techniques. Musically, fingerstyle is often instrumental and covers a diverse range of genres from traditional folk through to jazz, blues and even world music. Fingerstyle can be lyrical and melodic or percussive and hard-hitting. Acoustic guitar can be described as any music played on an acoustic guitar. Typical techniques include strumming with a plectrum and finger picking. Musically, anything goes, but acoustic guitar lends itself to accompany the voice and is closely associated with singer-songwriters such as James Taylor and KT Tunstall.

Decades later, Chet himself became one of Tommy Emmanuel’s biggest fans. With a host of top honors and awards Tommy’s popularity in the US skied. In 2005 Tommy was inducted into the National Thumbpickers’ Hall of Fame in Muhlenberg, KY and awarded with Thumbpicker of the Year and Album of the Year. Simon McBride also makes his IGF debut, tipped by Guitarist Magazine to be the revelation of the 2009-2010 blues scene, Simon is an almighty player with a passion for Hendrix and SRV. Students joining Simon’s class will be able to take part in a special Hendrix focus commemorating 40years since his passing.

And last but not least, pioneering blues artist Skip ‘Little Axe’ McDonald joins IGF to take students on an amazing acoustic journey.

Acoustic Blues with Skip McDonald and Alvin Young Blood Hart

This workshop is about the acoustic blues music associated with the Mississippi Delta and artists such as Bukka White, Son House, Tampa Red, Blind Boy Fuller and more recently Ry Cooder, Taj Mahal, Eric Bibb and Bob Brozman. Students don’t need to play a Resonator to join any acoustic will do as this is also about the music and techniques that are transferable to any guitar: altered tunings, standard position and lap and of course the bottleneck! Immerse yourself in the music and historical traditions of the Deep South.

Level 2/3 Heavy Blues with Simon McBride

Heavy Blues is for students that like a rock edge to their blues and is aimed at adventurous students of an intermediate and advanced level. You don have to read tab or notes, Simon will demonstrate the music aurally. Students can expect to cover a range of blues and blues rock artists from Buddy Guy to SRV and befitting the 40th anniversary of his death, Jimi Hendrix. Areas covered throughout the week will include improvisation, rhythm and lead playing, left and right hand technique, tone etc.

Level 4The IGF Blues Academy with Denny Ilett

The Blues Academy will help students to discover their own blues sound. Exploring a range of techniques, these workshops are for students with good listening skills. Denny will provide both an aural demonstration for non-readers and chord charts and tab for students wanting formal reference material.

Blues Workshop Profile

Soloing techniques Bending, vibrato, hammer-ons and pull-offs, multiple picking techniques. Improvising using both traditional blues scales and other scales. Creative improvisation by aural means, combining scales to build solos with a focus on phrasing, melodic development and

incorporating stylistic trademarks. Getting a good tone from your instrument, with left and right hand tone production.

Rhythm playing Turn-arounds, double stops, chord substitutions and extended chord voicings. Timing, playing with a strong swing feel, different shuffle rhythms and classic major and minor blues progressions. The importance of having a strong rhythmic foundation and understanding of chords in order to develop your improvisational lead guitar ability.

JammingIn addition to the evening jam sessions, students will have the opportunity to play with the IGF house band under the guidance of Denny and Simon to help improve both improvising and performance confidence.Much of the week’s work will lead up to the student showcase, which takes place on the final night of the week. Simon McBrideComing from the same recording stable (Nugene Records) as Matt Schofield, Denny Ilett and Ian Siegal places Simon in the company of greats! Recently featured in Guitarist Magazine’s 6 to listen out for in 2009, Simon’s debut album ‘Rich Man Falling’ has attracted serious attention from the music scene and excellent reviews in the press. Simon is a seasoned player with a long track record of playing and touring with leading artists including Slash and Steve Lukather. This is Simon’s IGF debut and we are delighted to welcome him to the blues faculty. Simon is endorsed by Paul Reed Smith Guitars.

Denny Ilett is rare commodity, a virtuoso British guitarist who has honed his chops not on the UK scene, but rather by playing and touring with some of New Orleans finest including Lillian Boutte and members of such notable bands as The Meters, Dr John and the Harry Connick Jnr Big Band.

The album ‘Start With The Soul’ was chosen in the New York Times top 10 releases of 2000 as well as the BBC Radio 2 Blues record of the year. In 2003, Hart's album ‘Down in the Alley’ was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. with bassplayer Doug Wimbish and drummer Keith LeBlanc formed the house band for the pioneering rap label Sugar Hill, providing the music for some of the most seminal records of the era by Grandmaster Flash, Afrika Bambaata, Force M.D.’s and others. With ‘Little Axe’ Skip pioneered the fusion of blues and electronic music that inspired artists such as Moby. Little Axe has several releases on Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records. Skip still has got the blues but this time the emphasis is on the gospel, another of Skip’s old loves. This week sees Skip return to his first love of simple acoustic blues and the art of story telling.

Jazz and beyond is aimed at musicians wanting to explore cutting edge jazz techniques extending the fretboard into fusion and jazz-rock. Students will focus on advanced harmonic voicing, extended scales and modes, picking exercises and left hand legato. The set list includes music by John Scofield, Jeff Beck, Scott Henderson and Ralph Towner. Students will be expected to be of an advanced level or seriously quick to learn!

Dario Cortese has studied with, amongst others, Frank Gambale, Maurizio Colonna, Ralph Towner, Steve Trovato and Richard Smith. After graduating from CPM in Milan, he relocated to London to join the Institute Of Contemporary Music Performance faculty. He has more than 15 years experience as a professional guitar tutor and session musician working alongside world-class artists such as Larry Carlton and Pete Vettese. Dario is

Level 2-3 Mojo with Neville Marten

This exciting musical mystery tour will cover a range of rock, pop and blues music from the last 50 years. From classic early rock’n roll to modern rock and pop classics. Improve your jamming skills and gain the necessary knowledge and confidence needed to be able to pick up the guitar and play a classic song anytime and anywhere.

During the workshops students will form an extended band and be joined by the IGF house rhythm section. Players are coached in how to faithfully decipher a classic track, replicate the style and techniques implicit to the original and are then encouraged to inject their own personality into performing the piece.

The set list will focus on music from major recording artists such as by Chuck Berry, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, David Bowie, Cream, Jimi Hendrix and also some more recent releases.

Neville Marten is perhaps best known for having edited two of Europe’s leading guitar magazines Guitarist and Guitar Techniques magazines (Future Publishing). He has written numerous columns on blues playing, as well as the best selling Giants of Blues (Sanctuary Publishing). In addition to his career as a journalist Neville is a highly rated guitarist whose regular gig is with Marty Wilde’s band, The Wilde Cats.

Rock Apprentice Highway to Hell with Stephen Lawson, Total Guitar

If you’re a beginner or an early learner with less than a year’s playing experience, then our Apprentice course could be just what you’re looking for. Focusing on a thorough grounding in playing basics, this course addresses key areas of learning, providing a solid base upon which to build in the future.

Principal areas covered include: Harmony - what chords do you need to know and which is the best order to learn them in? Melody - the importance of setting up a good fingering regime for all the basic level scales. Rhythm - covering song accompaniment, simple riff playing and correct plectrum technique.

The Rock Apprentice course also looks at essential techniques like string bending and vibrato, how to get the very best from your guitar/amplifier combination, as well as the use of effects. The set list includes music by bands such as Cream, AC/DC, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Queen, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and more.

Level 2 Classic Rock with Tolis Zavaliaris

Learn how to build powerful rhythm parts and construct effective sounding solos. During the week we will explore power chords, open position chords and other ‘clever’ chord voicings. Lead guitar technique will focus on pentatonic tricks, blues scale licks, hammer-ons and pull-offs, and tips on improving your improvisation and vibrato. You will also have the opportunity to perform in public at the student showcase on the final evening. Level 2/3Alternative Rock with Jonny Scaramanga

This unique course is for students wanting to work purely on rock rhythm skills. This is not about strumming but about ‘rhythmic riffing’ bridging the gap between solo and rhythm work and will appeal to those wanting to take control of both lead and rhythm duties. Techniques studied will include exploring common riff approaches, scales (pentatonics and modes), the flat 5 (interval of doom!), picking techniques and chord families. Students will also learn to maximise speed, control and a range of FX including pinch harmonics, string jumping and slurs. The set list includes music by alternative rock artists:

Celebrated cult guitarist Guthrie Govan is widely regarded as one of the most innovative and outstanding guitarists to emerge in modern times. Describing himself as coming from a ‘blues rock background’ his earliest influences were Jimi Hendrix and Cream-era Eric Clapton. Inspired by the imagination and passion of original artists like Frank Zappa, Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteen Guthrie is also an innovator and a genuine one-off. Guthrie is known for his virtuoso command of the electric guitar and his proficiency in various styles, from out and out rock to jazz-fusion and blues. Level 4Extreme Rock with Martin Goulding

Throughout the week, we will be taking a look at the main technical components that make up the modern rock guitar style. We will be studying the mechanics and musical application of a range of subjects including: alternate picking, legato, sweeping and tapping, along with vibrato, string bending and other related phrasing concepts. The workshops will draw reference to the main modern rock exponents including Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen and Greg Howe.

Level 5 Rock and Beyond with John Wheatcroft

The Rock and Beyond Masterclass is for advanced students that are looking to take their playing to a new dimension in rock, jazz and blues. If you have already completed Rock level 4, RAB should form the next stage in your development. Expanding your chord and scale vocabulary and exploring complex time signatures will help you to stand out from the crowd. The week will focus on advanced phrasing concepts, intervallic ideas, outside playing, chromatic passing notes, substitution ideas, playing over changes, chord sequences, extended and altered chords and comping. Includes music by: Bireli Lagrene, Larry Carlton, Joe Bonamassa, Django Reinhardt, John Scofield, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Vai, Pat Metheny and Yngwie Malmsteen.

Guitar Virtuoso Dave Kilminster's radical techniques and mesmerizing sounds captivate fans and fellow musicians alike. In 1991 Dave was named Guitarist Magazine's ‘Guitarist of the Year’ and since then he has gone on to fulfill a super-charged career as a multi-faceted guitarist. Dave has been on numerous worldwide tours with an array of legendary artists from Keith Emerson to Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, as part of the extraordinary global staging of Dark Side of the Moon. Fans will also know Dave from his work along side rock luminaries John Wetton, Carl Palmer, Ken Hensley, and John Young, among others.



High Voltage courses take on a workshop format, with open classes for early stage, intermediate and advanced students. Your tutor will help you to explore new music, expand your technical ability and improve your performance confidence. Each day will contain four elements:

Practical: Just as it sounds: hands-on guitar. Students will receive resources and an activity schedule for the week, as well as a list of study songs. This is your chance to get maximum mileage on your instrument without interruption – every day. See course descriptions for more details.

Theory: Being a complete musician means that you need to know your theory! It will be aimed at your area of interest or workshop, and give you the opportunity to ask questions. Diatonic harmony forms the basis for all western music and learning how this works and perfecting it will change the way you play forever.

Application: Putting the theory into practice and developing your own sound is all part of the journey. Application is about guitar exploration. Melodic lines over harmonic changes driven by rhythmic patterns.

Performance: IGF encourages performance and each day will include a special performance hour. Playing in front of others is the ONLY way to gain confidence. There will be opportunities to play solo, unplugged in groups and with full-on bands.

Live performance/Jam nights/Student showcase: A great deal of the week’s course work will lead up to the student concert. The concert will be open to the general public, and students are encouraged to take part in this concert to show off new skills, either as soloists or in bands.

Throughout your time with IGF, there will be many opportunities for students of all abilities to jam in an informal setting. These are good opportunities to try out pieces for the student concert or to just let rip with a few evil riffs. Students will be able to work with drummers and bass players from

Special interest workshops: For rock students attending the summer school between 31 July - 6 August, there is also the opportunity to take part in a series of separate afternoon workshops focusing on various playing techniques and styles. Andy Cook is a graduate of the Commercial Music Degree course run at Bath Spa University, where he received professional music industry training. He now works as a full-time guitar tutor in the Bath and North East Somerset region. Andy has extensive live experience with bands ranging from Snow Patrol, InMe and a Rage Against The machine tribute act. Andy was part of the IGF team in 2007, working in Bath and Gateshead.

Tyrian Serpell started his formal music studies at The Royal Academy of Music and The London College of Music. He went on to study at both the Purcell School and the famous The BRIT School receiving full scholarships for in each case. Tyrian splits his time between being a full time student at The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance and lead guitarist in the Metal band Omega. Tyrian has been coming to IGF since he was 11 years old, and joined the guitar faculty in 2006.

Elio Videla is a graduate of the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance and this is his second year as an assistant tutor at IGF. Elio is an extreme rock specialist and when not performing in various bands he can be found in the studio perfecting his studio tan.

Richard Perkins has a degree in Commercial Music from Bath Spa University, and runs the successful Bath Guitar School. About the tutors

Jonny Scaramanga is IGF’s loudest rock tutor! He is best known for his abuse of hairspray and screaming harmonics. Also a singer and songwriter, he is currently finishing his first solo album. He also writes for Total Guitar and Guitar Techniques magazines. From September 2008, he will be a tutor at the new BIMM Bristol College. Jonny can say, “Do you wanna get rocked?” in 19 languages.

John Wheatcroft (head of Faculty) leads a busy double-life as a performer and an educator, recently completing world tours with both Carl Palmer (ELP) and John Jorgenson (Elton John/ Hellecasters). He is a regular contributor to both Guitar Techniques and Guitarist magazines. John is currently Head of Guitar at Guitar-X, based in London.

Martin Goulding is a busy player specialising in guitar styles of the post-Van Halen era. He has over a decade of session experience and currently teaches at the Guitar Institute in London. He has written for international best-seller ‘Guitar - A Complete Guide For The Player,’ and is a columnist for Guitar Techniques magazine. This is Martin’s 5th year at IGF.

Jim Clark is a busy session musician and a highly regarded guitar teacher. Jim is a regular contributor to the Future Publishing music portfolio working on titles such as Guitar Techniques and Total Guitar. When not in the studio, he teaches at the Guitar X academy.

Stephen Lawson is Editor of Europe’s best-selling guitar magazine Total Guitar, a publication dedicated to beginners and improvers. As a professional guitarist specialising in rock and pop, Stephen is passionate about delivering the fundamentals of these styles to the next generation of players. His CV includes regular gigs with his functions band, studio sessions and teaching at various events throughout the UK.

Currently band leader for Tolis Zavaliaris Project and teacher at the London Institute of Contemporary Music, Greek born Tolis Zavaliaris has been performing throughout Europe for more than ten years. Experienced session guitarist/song writer/producer, he has worked with some of the UK’s top producers. His unique sound and versatility blends sounds from rock and modern jazz/fusion to Eastern European music. Tolis also is a contributor to Guitar Techniques magazine.

About the tutors

Terry Blyth is an experienced bassist and band leader. He’s worked with producers such as Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers, Tom Jones) and Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet). Terry has been signed to various rock bands and has co-written numerous songs that appeared on film and TV soundtracks. A firm believer in education, he is also a contributor to the Rockschool grade series for bass. (He’s performed with X-Factor’s Chico too, but don’t tell anybody).

Alan Mian is one of the most “in demand” bassists on the London music scene. He has played with many top jazz and funk artists including Wynton Marsalis, Julian Joseph, Amit Chatterjee and The Drifters. Alan has also worked in musical theatre playing in The Blues Brothers, The Rocky Horror Show, 42nd Street and the world’s premier Rolling Stones tribute band, The Counterfeit Stones. Alan is currently playing with The Amit Chatterjee

Workshop ProfileFunk and Beyond is the UK’s only serious course for groove based music. Special emphasis is placed on understanding the role of guitar and bass in styles as wide as funk, soul, rock, jazz and fusion. Not only will you learn numerous iconic song parts but lessons are linked with the drummers on the rhythm course, working together in groups to put theory and technique into practice.

GuitarFor guitar, emphasis will be placed on funk/RnB guitarists like Nile Rodgers (Chic, Madonna, David Bowie, Diana Ross), Curtis Mayfield, Al McKay (Earth, Wind and Fire), Leo Neocentelli (The Meters), Jimmy Nolen (James Brown), Prince, and David Williams (Michael Jackson, Madonna). In the area of rock, players covered will include John Frusciante (Red Hot Chilli Peppers), Tom Morello (Audioslave/Rage Against The Machine) and Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme) as well as 'guitarist's guitarists' like Steve Lukather, Mike Stern, Jeff Beck, Larry Carlton, Robben Ford and Joe Satriani.

Although the majority of time will be spent learning numerous licks and grooves from rhythm masters, there’ll also be workshops on developing 'hook focused' guitar parts, improving chord and harmony knowledge, expanding picking techniques, and developing creativity with scales like the pentatonic, Dorian and Mixolydian modes. Solid playing chops of at least two years experience is required for this intense course as a lot of material will be covered with much playing expected from you!

Join the Big Voice Academy with Kat – a fun and intensive course for anyone that enjoys singing. Students will work with Kat learning a range of techniques aimed at improving your singing and performance abilities.

About the tutor

Katrin Yr Oskardottier has extensive experience in music and performance skills. Early on in her career, Kat taught in youth centres in Iceland, whilst she herself studied classic vocals at Reykjavik academy of singing and vocal arts. Kat relocated to the UK in 2006 to study at the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance at Higher Diploma level and has gone on to complete the vocal Degree at Honours level. Whilst studying Katrin has worked solidly on extending and developing her teaching, performance and writing skill set. This has seen her work in conjunction with Nokia, BBC, LIMS, Mushroom Records, Tim Rice, Shola Ama, TMS Productions and China National TV.

The workshop is aimed at early stage and intermediate students and will focus on teaching students how to perform in tune and with confidence. Kat’s teaching is geared towards people who love singing, but aren’t necessarily comfortable with reading notation. The only prerequisites to joining her sessions are a pair of ears and lots of enthusiasm!

Areas covered include: voice projection, pitching, dynamics, microphone technique and harmonising for backing vocals and acappella.

Q: Why do most people come?To get the chance to meet other like-minded people, to be taught by professionals, the

concerts, the campus, the friendships.

Q: I have only been playing for six months, can I still enrol? Of course. The teachers are very experienced and will make sure that you attend classes best suited to your level of ability.

Q: Can I change class if I joined the wrong one?Yes, as long as there is space available.

Q: Should I bring an amplifier?Please bring along a small practice amp if possible. It isn’t the end of the world if you don’t have one, but it is certainly useful.

Q: Will I actually improve in such a short time? Quite simply, yes! You may come away with a year’s worth of work or even one piece of new information that can change the way you play for the better.

Q: Can I afford it? IGF Summer Schools offer great value for money. We are a charitable organization and make no profit. If you really can’t afford to come, we may be able to offer some financial assistance. This will depend on your application and the level of support IGF receives.

Q: Is there a deadline to send in my application?No, but the sooner the better!

Booking and general information

Facilities at the Park CampsOur first-rate facilities are located within the exceptionally beautiful Park Campus in Cheltenham. The Park has an Arboretum and is only a short walk to the historic spa town centre. There is a 350-seater auditorium and a modern classroom block equipped with the latest backline gear. The student union is a first rate modern performance area with a well stocked bar.

Accommodation at the Park Campus in CheltenhamThe Park was originally planned as a Victorian ornamental zoo and so the modern architecture stands proud in 24 acres of landscaped parkland. The site is situated less than ten minutes walk from Montpellier and the Bath Road with its numerous shops, restaurants, bars, banks, cafes and just 15 minutes walk from the lively and cosmopolitan centre of Cheltenham.

Standard Accommodation (Single En-Suite) - Park VillasFive regency style villas accommodate up to 180 single en-suite bedrooms. Each flat provides a shared kitchen area. Bedding, linen and towels are provided and rooms are cleaned daily.

Hostel Accommodation (Single) - Challinor HallsWith more basic facilities, Challinor offers good value for money. The generously sized bedrooms have a sink provided in each room, and shared bathrooms are available in each flat. Bedding, linen and towels are provided and rooms are cleaned twice weekly. Instrument Insurance and safety Do not leave your instrument or valuables unattended. We have never had a theft of any kind from an IGF event. Our campuses are extremely safe, but we strongly advise you take out additional instrument insurance before coming to IGF. Most household policies would not cover your instrument on the campus or at the student showcase. Rock School ExamsRock School is the number exam syllabus for rock musicians. The best way to assess your level and move forward in a structured way is to start the grades or take a vocational award. Young peopleAt IGF we observe strict standards and we are subject to close scrutiny from various bodies to observe these. IGF staff are CRB checked and we maintain accurate attendance records. All young people under the age of 18 and their parents will be required to sign a behaviour and acceptance of campus rules contract. We operate a strict zero tolerance policy to alcohol, drugs, bullying and violence. General rules are subject to a ‘three strikes and out’ policy. We reserve the right to send home, without a refund, anyone found breaking the rules repeatedly. Damage to property will be recovered. The minimum age for an unaccompanied child is 14 (residential) or 10 (non-residential).

Important message to young people, parents please take note:Under UK law we are required to operate a very strict code of conduct for all young people under the age of 18. It does not matter whether a young person of 17 is completely independent and living away from home, at IGF there will be specific rules regarding lights out and other behaviour guidelines. We don’t feel these rules are extreme or unreasonable but they may affect your sense of freedom. If you feel you may have difficulties with these issues please call us to discuss them in detail. Ninety percent of young people and their parents are perfectly happy to accept the campus rules as a means to protect themselves and others but a small minority find the law and resulting campus rules too restrictive.

Cancellation policyIGF reserves the right to cancel workshops up to 4 weeks prior to the start date. In the unlikely event that this happens an alternative course or full refund will be offered. Student cancellations are only accepted at our discretion for medical or extreme circumstances. Any booking cancellations after the full balance payment date will be subject to an admin charge of £50.

AccessibilityUniversity of Gloucestershire is wheelchair accessible and we will do our best to accommodate everyone. Unfortunately we do not have crèche facilities at the present time.

Health & SafetyAll students' electrical equipment must comply with up to date CE, British and European safety standards. This includes amplifiers, extension leads and effects units. You may be asked to produce a PAT test certificate, available from electricians or music equipment repair stores. If you are worried about your gear and don’t have a PAT test please let us know and we can arrange to have it looked at on campus. Details on lifting heavy equipment is available from the IGF office. Please ask for assistance or a trolley when carrying heavy equipment. We

Calling musicians between the ages of 11 and 18!

IGF brings you the best tutors, state of the art facilities and the world-famous IGF teaching experience. Whether you play solo or in a band this is a place for you to work hard, have fun and take your playing to the next level.

Facilities

All three locations are strategically well placed in terms of transport and include state-of-the-art, fully-equipped, sound-proofed rehearsal and recording studios. The Sage Gateshead is an important cultural landmark and is well placed to receive young people. The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, London and City of Bath College are geared towards educational excellence for young people.

Workshop format

There are open classes for early stage, intermediate and advanced students. These are Music Industry subsidised places for

all young people. Your dedicated tutor will help you to explore new music, expand your technical ability and improve your performance confidence. There will be many live performance opportunities during the five days week including jam sessions, band rehearsals and the student showcase on the final day.

If you’re an ‘early learner’ with less than a year’s playing experience, then our Apprentice course could be just what you’re looking for. The set list includes: Eric Clapton and Cream, The Darkness, Jimi Hendrix

Experience, Queen, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.

Level 2Monsters of Rock

Learn how to build powerful rhythm parts and construct effective solos. Explore power chords, open position chords and other ‘clever’ chord voicing. Lead guitar technique will focus on pentatonic and blues scale licks and riffs. The set list includes: AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Bryan Adams, Cream, Jimi Hendrix and Thin Lizzy.

Level 2Alternative Rock

This unique course is for students wanting to work purely on rock rhythm skills and will appeal to those wanting to take control of both lead and rhythm duties. The set list

includes music from bands such as Muse, Foo Fighters, Audioslave, Green day, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Linkin Park.

Level 4Extreme Rock

We will be studying the mechanics and musical application of the modern rock guitar style. Alternate picking, legato, sweeping and tapping, along with vibrato, string bending and other related phrasing concepts. Set List including Hendrix, Metallica, Queen Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert and Joe Satriani.
