Patterson River Secondary College Year 9 Band visits Chelsea PS

Yesterday, our students had a fantastic time listening and clapping along to the

Patterson River Secondary College Year 9 Band.

The performance began with the ensemble captain introducing her instrument, the

clarinet. The first song played was called Strike force and it is popular with the band

because it has a strong drum beat. Next the band played Do-Re-Me from The Sound

of Music. This was very popular as some of our students have been learning this song

with Mr. Hewet in music. Keeping with the movie theme next song was

Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious from Mary Poppins. The next instrument introduced

was the flute. The band then played an Israeli folk song called Spinning Game. One of

the favourite instruments of the prep boys sitting near me was the trombone. They

really enjoyed imitating how the instrument was played. Blues music was the next

genre of the band and they played Bunyip blues and Wombat shuffle. This is a tricky

song for the band but their band mascot Wally the Wombat helps them. He was

hidden in the MPR but our students quickly found him, Ben the drummer introduced

the crowd participation part of the show with songs from Queen. There was lots of

clapping and foot stamping in time to We Will Rock You followed by Another One Bites

the Dust. Angela introduced her instrument, the glockenspiel and the band played

Surfing USA. Seth the trumpet player introduced the last song the band has

nicknamed Burrito. Everyone called out “burrito” and raised their hands. At the end

of the show our school captains Nicole and Liam thanked the band. We gave PRSC a

score of 10/10.

Soccer and Footy at lunchtime

This week I have really enjoyed being out in the playground at lunchtime watching the many different footy and

soccer games being played on the turf. It never ceases to amaze me how well our students share the space and

know who is playing which game as they often intermingle. My particular focus has been the Year 3/4 game (with a

few students from the younger grades joining in). With the help of a couple of students, I have been looking for

examples of fair play, and my helpers have been handing out Best and Fairest certificates each day. What has struck

me most about the way our students interact is the care they show each other. In amongst the obvious “dives”

were some more serious falls and on every occasion, the student who was injured was kindly supported by mates.

Farewell

The end of term is often a time when we say goodbye to members of our

school community. Today we farewelled Gloria Peters who has worked as

an Integration Aide at Chelsea PS for the past 20 years. Gloria has

supported too many students to count in this time and I know many of

you have expressed your heartfelt thanks for her honest and dedicated

approach. Gloria’s sons and a number of colleagues from other work

places joined her today to bid her farewell. The staff put on an amazing

high tea, good enough to rival the Masterchef contestants!

We also say goodbye to Mrs Rachel Lawson who has been teaching in the

prep area for the first half of this year. Fortunately, Rachel will still be an

active member of the school community, both as a parent and a Casual

Relief Teacher. Thanks Rachel, you have been a wonderful team member.

Sadly, we say goodbye to two families. Molly and Harry Humphrey are

moving to a new school, and Vanamo and Aukust Makela are returning to

Finland.

Enjoy a safe and happy holiday. School resumes Monday 13th July.

The Skoolbag App is helpful to our school community to notify upcoming events, newsletter,

information from the teachers, change of your address and phone numbers, student absence notes and

school payment link to Qkr for excursions, camp and others.

If you have any enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact the office.
