The Mount Forest Co-opgrocery store evolved to become a self-serve grocery with a cashregister. In the early years, customers submitted their shoppinglist to the clerk who would collect items while they waited. Other customers phoned the store with their orders to be picked up later. And like many co-operatives in Ontario in the1950s and 1960s that operated grocery stores, Durham Co-ophad an IGA.Over time as other retailers who specialized in food located tothe area, co-ops moved on to provide products and services thatfarmers and rural people could only find at the Co-op.
