By introducing an inclusive shop on the ground floor, the work yard is blended with a student courtyard. The majority of the facility’s corridors wrap around the space, providing views of a constantly living environment.

HEXwallThe wall is made of over 1000 custom extruded ceramic bricks. The bricks have 3 different knock outs that either mask views or permit visual connects and permit light to pass through the wall. The size of the knock outs is determined by the minimums of the machine. The bricks were fired in both electric and gas kilns, hence the 2 tones and 25% of the most open bricks will be glazed and refired to reflect light on and through the surface.

Due to the many different experimental extruding techniques and firing methods, the fabrication of the 1200 hexagonal bricks took over 6 weeks.

SOL GrottoSOL Grotto is a spartan retreat—a space of solitude and close to nature where one is presented with a mediated experience of water, coolness and light . The SOL Grotto also explores Solyndra’s role as a company Sh*t Out of Luck. 1,368 of the 24 million high tech glass tubes destined to be destroyed as a casualty of their bankruptcy, are used in the installation.

The project is located in the Berkeley Botanical Garden alongside Strawberry Creek in the California Native section as part of the exhibit Natural Dis-course, which is a collaborative project between The University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley and a multi-disciplinary group of artists, writers, architects and researchers who have been invited to spend time in the Garden’s extraordinary collection of plants, engage with the horticulturists and develop new site specific work.

synthesis market + cafevegetarian

The vegetarian cuisine can be regarded as natural, organic and environmentally friendly. Synthesis takes these ideals to create a source of health, education and community. By blending the cafe, the cafeteria and the market into one space, all three menus are unified by vegetarian principles.

Digging into the roots of vegetarian cuisine, its dining experience lies on the process of photosynthesis. Sunlight is converted into energy through a process of photosynthesis found in plant cells. The perforations throughout Synthesis imitate the cellular struc-ture and patterns in plants and shower the spaces with daylight.

The two spaces within the design are arranged to allow directed traffic flow but also provide blending of the elements and materials. The undulating form that blankets the spaces curves down into the floors to create walls, ceilings and columns. Its perforations accommodate vines and other vegetation to surround the guests with the vegetarian environment.
