From the Principal

It’s great to be back. There was a lot of excitement around the school on Tuesday despite the rainy conditions.

You will be amazed to see the progress on the NEW BUILDING if you come to the College. It is towering above us and just waiting for the rain to stop so the roof can be put on. Then the internals will be quickly in place. If the weather holds, we should be using the buildings in Term Three this year.

Trees have been knocked down below Kindyland to make way for an eighty car CARPARK. The staff and students will have a place to park which is inside the grounds and not the muddy fields they currently find themselves in during the rain. Again, with some dry weather we may be driving through the lower gate some time next term.

Plans have been drawn up for an EXTENSION TO THE LIBRARY, and designs for new BASKETBALL AND TENNIS COURTS are in pro-cess. As long as we keep our enrolments steady, these projects will be completed over the next couple of years.

We WELCOME THE NEW STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES to Charlton. Regular Charltonians, please take the time to get to know our new Mums, Dads and Carers. Please make them feel a significant part of our Charlton family.

Achieving your Personal Best!

This year we are maintaining our focus on PERSONAL BEST. We want to help students to go deeper in their learning. This cannot be achieved by allowing children to listen to music, watch TV, game and do schoolwork all at the same time. Multitasking creates what Caroline Leaf calls a “milkshake brain” where nothing gets done well. Learning becomes superficial and anything learned does not stick. It fades away very quickly.

If this is true, how are your children going to achieve their Personal Best (PB)?

• Practice

• Hard work

• Focused/deep learning

“Practice makes perfect” is an old adage. It is true in any area of life. Hard work im-proves attitude whether you are in a school, the workplace or on the sporting field. And no deep learning occurs without concentrated effort. Quiet, lengthy com-mitment to a task will help retain knowledge. It goes against the current culture of shallow multi-tasking which results in that “milkshake brain” http://drleaf.com/blog/multitasking-is-a-myth/ .

This is the year to celebrate the GOOD THINGS GOD HAS DONE AT CHARLTON. We have great staff and wonderful students. Our leavers have good jobs and are in TAFE and Uni, and are a true reflection of their schooling and their parents’ sup-port. We are working together with the desire to see your children grow to be fine young men and women who serve their community well. We share the desire to see these Charlton Alumni grow to be people of integrity and compassion, making a difference in their society.

I become very disappointed when I see schools measured by their academic out-put alone. School is always about getting the best education. It’s what we want.

PRAYER POINTS • Praise God for a refreshing break and for protection

of our property over the holidays.

• Praise God for our new students.

• Pray that all students (and staff) settle into the New Year well.

• Continue to pray for more enrolments.

DO YOU HAVE A PRAYER REQUEST?Would you like someone to pray for you, your family or a friend?

Would you like someone to stand with you in faith to believe for a breakthrough?

Email our chaplain, Matt Stackhouse: [email protected] or phone (02) 4959 9111.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when completeness comes, what is in part disap-pears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Verse for the Week: 1 Corinthians 13:8-13

FROM THE CHAPLAIN2015 is here! How do you want it to look? What do you want it to be characterised by? The above verse would sug-gest that you couldn’t go wrong if you made love your theme this year. God calls his children to love in action and for this reason it is the highest achievement, the greatest challenge and loftiest goal for us all. It’s what he did when Jesus Christ came into the world: love put on skin! It’s the first Charlton cornerstone and the theme for each verse of the week this term. I pray that 2015 becomes the year when all families within the Charlton community make deliber-ate decisions to love those around you. In doing so, may we see the truth that it never fails!

Continued...

But an education in the context of a safe and warm family environment is important too. So many of you want good values for your children: What good is an education in an environment that is teaching nega-tive and permissive values? Television and gaming are doing a good job of that already. Selfishness and greed are not ideals to strive for. Our playground is peaceful. There is the opportunity for fun. Rules are there to keep everyone safe but are not spiteful and severe. Camps and excursions give the opportunity for a broad and relational education, which the experts say is the most beneficial for children.

To sum up, Charlton values education; it values Christian community and within this context, we value your children as young men and women made in God’s image. They deserve the best. Thanks for partnering with us as we share that responsibility.

Secondary Swimming Carnival

The Results are in!

The wet and overcast weather conditions were blown away last Thursday morning with the excitement and record breaking competition at the 2015 Secondary Swimming Carnival at Speers Point Pool. Blue skies and hot weather were the order of the day as our students descended on the pool for the annual event. It was also encouraging to see such a large number of students involved this year. All 3 houses were well represented with a touch of dress up fun and colour spread throughout the day. The program of events included Freestyle, Individual Medleys, Backstroke, Butterfly and Breaststroke. The busy fifteen minute Mega Relay had the pool resem-bling a washing machine on full cycle! The house relays were particularly exciting and a crowd pleaser as the fast, furious and well-tuned Junior, Intermediate and Senior swimmers set a great pace down the main lanes of the pool. The marshals were pleased to announce a large number of records were broken on the day.

Congratulations to DANEEKA CROKER who broke the 200m Individual Medley. AXELL GROSS with a mighty effort of the 200 Free, 50 Back, 100 Free, 50 Breast, 200 I.M. and 50 Butterfly, MYLES GEDDES in the 50 Back and 50 Butterfly, LUCAS GEDDES in the 50 Back, MITCHELL ROBERTS in the 50 Back and 200 I.M. and THOMAS ROBERTS in the 200 Free, 50 Back, 100 Free, 50 Breast, 200 I.M and 50 Butterfly!!

House winners on the day were BOOTH with an overall score of 1006 followed by Court with 884 and Liddell with 777. WELL DONE EVERYONE!!

CHARLTON’S NEW COACH!

THANK YOU!

The Secondary Carnival was a huge success thanks to the mammoth task of Wade Warren who once again headed up an invaluable team of teachers and support staff. Mrs McLean was at her best capturing great snaps of special moments during the events and a big thank you to Miss Rees and her girls for the fabulous catering job as usual. At the end of a hot day, it was a very proud moment to hear Speers Point Staff complimenting Charlton students as be-ing very well behaved and respectful of the pool area.

A huge thank you also to Graphic Designer, Chris Lawrence for the brilliant sketches (pictured left) from the Carnival. Recognise anybody?

Primary Swimming Carnival

“The most fun, the most involved parents and the best carnival we’ve had” said one of the staff at the Speers Point Pool! “Our College is Amazing!” This was only one of a few comments made by people at the Primary Swimming Carnival on Wednesday. We not only looked good but our kids were so encouraging, well mannered and they represented our school wonderfully.

LIDDELL ran away with the trophy once again as they were represented extremely well by LARISSA HOBBS, CRYSTAL LANG-PIASON, TEMANA MOANAROA, TERANGIMARIE MOANAROA. Each of these students are from Liddell and they either won or came second in each of their respec-tive races. No wonder they gained so many points!

Records were broken by TERANGIMARIE and CRYSTAL LANG-PIASON as well as several others. It was a remarkable day in the pool and I have never seen so much colour and noise come from the Grandstands. Well done Primary!!

I’d love to say a big thank you to all the parents who came along and supported our swimmers. It’s great to have such encouraging and helpful parents and families who support at events like these. Thank you for your kind words. Most of the staff have commented how you, the parents (our community) encouraged and spoke praise over our students yesterday. You support your children so well!!

A special mention to all the teachers who worked so hard to make it such a wonderful and fun day. We have such passionate and committed staff here at Charlton. What a great day we had. Well done team!

Age Champions and our Zone team will be announced soon. Zone Swimming is at the Forum, Newcastle and will be held on Tuesday 24th February.

We welcomed our very excited new Kindies in Week 1, all looking very grown up and eager in their new uniforms. There were minimal tears from the chil-dren, but not so from the mums! We have been so settled and have already done Sport in Schools, Library, Music, and had a mini-excursion around the school! We’ve even been doing Literacy Groups because we are so clever.

Mrs Randall and Mrs Gould
