NEW MEMBERS ORIENTATION INTRODUCTION

This material was written with you in mind. Included in it is information about our activities, auxiliaries, history, and doctrinal beliefs. Regarding the series of doctrinal studies included, I have attempted to summarize what we believe, because of the need to give direction without too much detail. It's my desire to induce you to think and to avoid the presumption of thinking for you. I hope through this document you will better understand your relationship with Christ and His church understand with greater clarity your conversion and find a place of meaningful and fulfilling service in your everyday experience. Without a doubt, you are the beneficiary of the privilege of a right relationship with God, which brings with it the responsibility that comes with every privilege, timely service. Through your commitment, you can access and appropriate the resource, which comes from a faithful fellowship and involvement in the life of the Providence Family. Greetings: I'd like to welcome you to the Providence Family. Providence is the "Church with a warm welcome", and I hope you'll feel at home among the warm people of Providence. Our theme is "Many Ministries, One Mission", promoting the singleness of the mission of the church. That mission, simply put is to evangelize the world. I pray the spirit of God will impress upon you the importance of being a witness in both word and deed. Providence has many activities and ministries, which you are welcome to participate in. Our Bible Study and Sunday School will help you grow closer to God through His word and our Prayer Meeting will remind you of your need for daily communication with God. Whatever your area of interest in Providence, please feel fee to join in with those who are already working. Additionally, and of equal importance is our commitment to build a new facility to the glory of God. For this to be accomplished, it will require members such as yourself joining with our Church Family to commit time, talent, and treasury regularly and consistently. Without your support, our road is certainly more difficult. I pray for your earnest support. PROVIDENCE BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORY

Providence Baptist Church was organized the fourth Sunday of March 1883. The late Dr. E. R. Carter acted as moderator and organizer. He, with four members from the Friendship Baptist Church laid the foundation for what is now the Providence Baptist Church. Dr. E. R. Carter, Rev. C. O. Jackson, Rev. Battle, Rev Hall along with Hanson Cash, P. M. McNaughty Millie Ponder, Miller Thomas, Daffin Davis, Lula Little-Monroe, and B. A. Lawson were the members present. The Church was called the Brownsville Baptist Church because Brownsville was the name of South Atlanta at that time. After some years, the southern section of the city was identified as South Atlanta. Thus the church changed it's name to South Atlanta Baptist Church. The members, however, feeling the need to express the church's holy purpose and to reveal to the world her righteous connection, adopted the present name, Providence Baptist Church. This name was recommended by Deacon C. W. Holland, who at that time was an ordained deacon. The first pastor of Providence Baptist Church was Rev. Hardy Curry. He labored hard and well. From him the church received it's poise and bearing. After eighteen months of work, Rev. L. F. Bivens and Rev. H. W. White came into the vineyard to work. The membership grew by leaps and bounds. Rev. White inspired the church to change its location from Moury Avenue and Lansing Street to 61 Bisbee Avenue. The change in location was accompanied by a change in pastors. Rev. Schell assumed the mantle of leadership. After eliminating the church's indebtness, he left and the Rev. Zimmerman was called to the church. Rev. Zimmerman was a Christian and preacher of great ability. He labored briefly, but well. Rev. T. H. Fannings followed Rev. Zimmerman's leadership. His stay was one filled with many successes. Rev. R. A. Holland succeeded Rev. Fanning. He remained pastor for eleven years. Rev. G. W. Carter assumed the responsibility as pastor and did an outstanding job. After his departure, Rev. C. L. Wilder came on the scene. One of Rev. Wilder's contributions was the assistance he provided to remodel the church building. Next, Rev. Sanford was given the opportunity to carry on the work of the master. After Rev. Sanford passed, the eminent Dr. T. L. Ballou became pastor. With Rev. Ballou as pastor, education became a more important part of Providence's mission. Following Rev. Ballou's departure, Rev. C. N. Ellis was called. It was with his matchless guidance that in less than four years, the old church was torn down and a new church erected. Having labored well and hard, Rev. Ellis left for other duties and Rev. p. R. Geer cleared the church of all indebtness and increased the membership. He served eighteen years. Rev. Geer left and the church's members called Rev. Thomas Blue. After the work of Rev. Blue, a young, educated and progressive minister was called. He was Rev. Otis Moss. Our church was spiritually elevated by this young minister.

Rev. Warren G. Parsons, Sr. followed in the footsteps of this great preacher. During Rev. parson's ministry the church's basement was equipped with a kitchen, new pews, pulpit furniture, air conditioning, organ, carpeting, a parking lot and modern office. Rev. Parsons passed in January of 1985. Our present pastor, Charles E. Nesbitt, Jr., joined us in June, 1985. Since coming to Providence, Pastor Nesbitt has stressed the importance of social and evangelical ministries. Our ministries to youth, seniors, singles as well as our food program and domestic assistance ministry speak to many needs beyond our walls. Our pastor has led us in purchasing a new facility to more effectively fulfill our mission. As you can see, Providence has a rich past, a challenging present and a promising future. May God be praised! Under Pastor Nesbitt's leadership, Providence experienced growth with the move from Bisbee Avenue in South Atlanta, to a larger facility on Hawthorne Avenue in College Park. This growth was also felt in the many ministries of the church. Current ministries expanded and newer ministries were added. Pastor Nesbitt's commitment to young people is evident in the growth and expansion of the Youth and Young Adult Ministries. This includes the Youth Ministry, Teen Ministry, Annual Youth Revival and Annual Youth Conference - which featured the creation of the Providence Steppers Step Team, the Providence Developmental Center Daycare, the Disciples of Providence (Teen Leadership/Discipleship Program), Summer Camp, the implementation of the Deric Burgess Youth Recreation Center, and the Youth Usher Ministry. Additionally, a partnership with Tapestry House for unwed teen mothers, the adoption of the College Park Heath Care Center - a monthly ministry to seniors at an assisted living care facility, the Evangelistic Ministry, Health Ministry, and Neighborhood Outreach demonstrates Pastor Nesbitt's continued commitment to the community. This commitment signifies his ongoing efforts to move the church "beyond the walls" by bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to the surrounding communities. The expansion of current ministries include the long running radio broadcast on WYZE 1480 AM, an in-house Bookstore, Men's Ministry, Women's Ministry, Annual Men and Women's Conferences, Singles Ministry, and Job Ministry. Newer ministries added include Seniors Ministry, Computer Ministry and opening of a Computer Lab, Tape Ministry-Sound/Media/Video Ministry, the purchase of church transportation, and the publishing of the Providence Business Directory and quarterly newsletter the Providence Post. In 1989, Pastor Nesbitt and the Providence Church Choir produced a musical recording "Fire Going On". Since then the Music Ministry has continued to grow with the expansion of the Providence Church Choir and Youth Choir and the addition of the Mass Choir, Sanctuary Choir, Men's Choir, and Sunrise Choir. Finally, Pastor Nesbitt's vision for the future of Providence continues to build on the foundation of God's Word, the preaching of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and continued commitment to community involvement. This vision also includes the building of "Providence Row" a housing development scheduled for commencement in late Spring 2002. Providence is truly on the move for the Lord.

CHURCH COVENANT Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord, Jesus Christ as our Savior; and on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and the son, and of the Holy Spirit, we do now in the presence of God, angels and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ. We engage, therefore by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this church in knowledge and holiness; to give it a place in our affections, prayers, and services above every organization of human origin; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrine; to contribute cheerfully and regularly, as God has prospered us, toward sits expenses, for the support of a faithful and evangelical ministry among us, the relief of the poor and the spread of the Gospel throughout the world. In case of difference of opinion in the church, we will strive to avoid a contentious spirit, and if we cannot unanimously agree, we will cheerfully recognize the right of the majority to govern. We also engage to maintain family and secret devotion; to study diligently the word of God; to religiously educate our children; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintance; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be kind and just to those in our employ, and faithful in the service we promise others; endeavoring in the purity of heart and good will towards all men to exemplify and commend our holy faith. We further engage to watch over, to pray for, to exhort, and stir up each other unto every good work; to guard each other's reputation, not needlessly exposing the infirmities of others; to participate in each other's joys, and with tender sympathy bear one another's burdens and sorrows; to cultivate Christian courtesy; to be slow to give or take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, being mindful of the rules of the Savior in the eighteenth chapter of Matthew, to secure it without delay; and through life, amid evil report, and good report, to seek live to the glory of God, who hath called us out of darkness into his marvelous light. When we remove from this place, we engage as soon as possible to unite with some other church where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s word.

“THE MEANING OF YOUR CHRISTIAN EXPERIENCE” Week One You are now a member of Providence Baptist Church. More importantly though, you are a Christian, and miraculous things have occurred in your innermost being. Because of your faith in Christ, you have received salvation and the guarantee of the power to overcome life’s circumstances. Things will never be the same again. You’ve received God’s forgiveness, the privilege of fellowship with other Christians and the promises of God related to your relationship with His son. In order to understand and appreciate better this experience, the first lesson focuses on the meaning behind your spiritual experience. There are some things about eh experience of salvation, which the Christian can never fully understand. For instance, God never tells just how the blood of Jesus Christ erases the sin stains of one who trusts in Him. Salvation is based on faith, nevertheless. It is not determined by knowledge. On can enjoy salvation fully even though one doesn’t understand it completely. Believe this though; you see through a glass darkly now, but then, face to face (I Cor. 13:12).

“THE MEANING OF YOUR CHURCH MEMBERSHIP” Week Two Church membership is the natural thing for a Christian. The believer's first desire is to please Jesus, and one cannot please Him by neglecting the church. It would not be natural or possible to love Jesus, and yet be indifferent to the institution, which he loved devotedly and gave himself (Eph. 5:25) sacrificially for Jesus' affection for the church should shape our commitment and devotion to it.

“YOU AND YOUR CHURCH” Week Three The church belongs to Christ. I refer to it here as your church. I am not suggesting possession but relationship. It is your church in a similar sense in which Atlanta is your city. Perhaps the church did many things for you before you became a member of one. Maybe Christ was for many years a historical figure to you before he became your personal saviour. But now that you are a member you have appropriated possibilities heretofore unavailable without faith in Jesus as the Christ. Providence accepts the responsibility of nurturing and guiding you in spiritual growth that you might achieve through Christ all He makes available.

“YOUR STEWARDSHIP” Week Four A Steward is a keeper, not a n owner. He handles that which rightfully belongs to another. He feels accountable personally for the careful protection and wise use of that which is entrusted to him. He handles the possession of the owner with more caution and concern than he would if it were his very own. As Christians we are not owners of earthly things. We are users and keepers of God’s possessions. We must care for and use God’s possessions as the great owner desires. You as a Christian must personally face the matter of stewardship and decide right now what attitudes and actions will be yours as you handle possessions for God. Handling his affairs aright is very important. The principle of stewardship, if practiced aright, must first be understood and appreciated.

“YOUR TESTIMONY” Week Five “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so” (Ps. 107:2). This verse expresses the urges of the Christian to tell others about his Lord. It tells of his obligation to share his own experience of conversion with others. Witnessing is as natural to the Christian as breathing. Conversion is such a glorious spiritual experience that one cannot remain quiet about it. It is so real that it must be revealed. There is no such thing in the plan of God as secret discipleship. Jesus wants his disciples to be spokespersons of truth. He requires that they be heralds of glad tidings. One who knows the Christian message must tell it. One who is true to Christ must proclaim the glad tidings abroad. As a Christian you have a story to tell. No one will tell your story like you can. There is someone who will hear your testimony who may not listen to a preacher or anyone else. That fact makes your testimony imperative and effective. It gives you a unique place in the winning of the lost and in carrying out the plan of God.

“YOUR HOME AND YOUR CHURCH” Week Six The home and the church are institutions of God. They were begun by His divine hands. They fulfill holy missions. Each one plays an important role in your life, growth, and influence. Because God began both of these important institutions, they are expected to serve Him as well as bless you. The home and the church are to work side by side in complete harmony of spirit and attitude. Each is to strengthen and encourage the other that the highest purposes of God might be served. Already we have studies about the church. We have thought of its origin, beliefs, work and importance. Now we can center our attention on the home. This chapter is given with the prayer that the will of God shall be fully understood and completely done with regard to your home. You will find your deepest happiness as your home and your church work together to find and fulfill the purpose of the Creator and the mission of the Saviour.

“YOUR ALL FOR CHRIST” Week Seven From Christ you have received full forgiveness. In return you are asked to follow Him devotedly and serve Him faithfully. The manner in which you can please him most is dedicated faithfulness through His church. This chapter proposes to set forth the need for full dedication. It appeals for complete discipleship. It also tells the means by which you can render your most acceptable service to Him. It is a challenge that you as a Christian hold back nothing from Christ, which he needs and can use. Only the fullest measure of your devotion will be pleasing to Him. Anything else is too small.
