FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

REAL LIVE FATHER… The story is told of a father of five children. The father had won a toy at a raffle. He called his children together to ask which one should have the present. “Who is the most obedient?” he asked. “Who never talks back to mom and who does everything mom says?” Five small voices piped up in unison: “Okay daddy! You get the toy!” To all the fathers, grandfathers, and great grandfathers, we extend to you best wishes for a Happy

Father’s Day-enjoy it! I suppose it’s not so easy to be a father in our twenty first century world. Why do I say that? Basically because it’s not easy to be a man in today’s world! In order to be a good father, you need to be a “real man.” When we think about what this idea of a real man might consist of in our society, understandably there might be some confusion. For some people, manhood is proven by extreme athletic ability, sexual performance, exces-sive drinking and other expressions of what is come to be known as “machismo.” But these things are of cari-catures of what true manhood and fatherhood is . On Father’s day, we stop for a moment and think about what a true father is. First of all, a father is a leader in the sense that he puts aside selfish concerns and sacrifices for his wife and kids. Being a biological fa-ther is easy but being a mature man is not! Recently, I received a letter from the director of the Cross Road Foundation here on Staten Island, Kimberly Carbonaro. Cross Roads is a wonderful organization that pro-vides options for pregnant women other than abortion. In her letter, Ms. Carbonaro writes about a young girl who came to their center determined to have an abortion. While she was talking about all this, the girl began to break down and cry. She opened up and told her story. As it turned out, the man she had been with since she was 14 years old was denying her baby and wanted nothing more to do with her. After much discussion, the young lady decided not to have an abortion saying, “I can’t kill a person; I would be killing someone if I have an abortion.” Certainly she made the right decision thanks be to God. But what about her partner? Obviously he was not “man enough” to be there for his girlfriend at a very critical time in her life! Today many men “cop out” and instead of doing what is right, run away from their responsibilities. Real fathers are men who prove their love by commitment and sacrifice. They are not afraid to give of them-selves and accept responsibility. Secondly, true fathers are religious. Jesus taught us to call God “Our Father.” The Lord spoke of Gad as a loving parent. Yes, our fathers were the “breadwinners” but they also did so much for us in life that we cannot really calculate it all. One of the most important things that a father can do is to pass on the faith to his children. In the baptismal rite of the Church when the priest comes to bless all the fathers, he says these words: “O Lord, bless the fathers of these children...they will be the teachers of their children in the ways of faith. May they be the best of teachers, bearing witness to faith by what they say and do.” Hopefully, the dads take that blessing seriously! In that respect, I always think of my own father who died shortly after I came to Saint Charles. He was a man of faith who always made sure we got to Mass on Sunday-it was important to him! On Father’s day, we pray for our fathers whether living or deceased. May God the Heavenly Father bless them abundantly for their goodness and for the sacrifices they made for us. Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
