Afterwards, we met at Features to have some pizza and beverages while watching the Packers vs. Bengals football game. The road is clean and the Packers won, thanks to the hard work of the KCs and families. COLUMBUS DAY, OCTOBER 9, 2017 … Columbus Day is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the historic voyage and landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. The anniversary of his landing in the New World was first for- mally celebrated in 1792, by the Columbian Order (Society of St. Tammany) in New York City. Today, Columbus Day is cele- brated on the second Monday in October each year. This means the date changes each year and this year it is on Monday, October 9th. In Christopher Columbus’s day, scholars knew that the world was round; the fact dated from the ancient Greeks. People assumed that a ship traveling west from Europe would sail clear through to Asia. However, many believed that such a westward journey was impossible. Columbus, an Italian, was convinced otherwise and persuaded King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain to sponsor his exploration and search for riches. On October 12, 1492, Columbus landed on a small island in the Bahamas, convinced that he had reached his destination of Asia. Although he was not the first European to discover the Americas (Vikings, among others, had visited before), his journey sparked enthusiasm for European exploration of the hemisphere. The first celebra- tion of Columbus’s landing in the New World took place in 1792. It was organized by the Columbian Order (Society of St. Tam- many) in New York City. In 1937, the occasion was declared a national holiday by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Columbus Day has been observed on the second Monday of October since 1971. Many celebrate Italian-American heritage on this day. The ob- servance of Columbus Day is not without controversy. European exploration brought disease and devastation to the lives of the indigenous people of the Americas. Some areas of the United States choose to honor Native American culture on this day. History is multifaceted. Columbus Day also speaks to the thirst for adventure, exploration, and possibilities that embodies the spirit of America. Columbus represents many early explorers and dreamers who reached for opportunity and not only dreamed, but acted.

The Holmen Knights of Columbus held our final highway cleanup of the

year on Sunday, September 24th. We met in the church parking lot at

Deputy Grand Knights Report …… Brother Knights!

Autumn is under way! Which means we are adjusting to the swings in our weather (95 to 65 degrees)

the last few weeks. Thank you to all who are helping with the Parish CCD program! It is great to see

so many Knights and their families at the Middle School on Wednesday helping our youth in finding

their faith.

Thank you to Knights of Columbus of Fond du Lac for donating $1,000 to the RSVP program designed

for men studying for the priesthood. This money was collected at a camporee for the Knights of Co-

lumbus International Campers Association which was held in Osseo, WI in June of this year. Monsi-

gnor Malin was so gracious to celebrate the event this year, opening with Mass. The KCs of Fond du Lac sent us the $1,000

to provide a proper thank you for Monsignor’s generosity. We are very blessed to have Monsignor at our Parish! Here is

As I mentioned in a recent bulletin, the 3rd Annual Catholic Men’s Conference called Men of the Cross is scheduled to be

held in Chippewa Falls on Saturday, October 28th. What a great way to enrich your faith! To find out

We work hard and we play hard … like at our HWY Clean Up! We had a wonderful turnout on a very hot

Sunday and we had some good old-fashion fun at Features and watched the Packers play! And yes, it

looked very grim in the first half, however, with faith and hope the Packers did win at the end! Sometimes

this represents our faith… keep the faith.

Remember we are always learning about our faith and how God works within us every day.

Bobbi Corcoran was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer at the end of July. While

their first course of action was to do a surgery to remove the visible tumors,

there were too many tumors that had spread throughout her abdomen and onto

her heart and lungs and it wasn't safe to start with surgery. They started her on

nine consecutive weeks of chemotherapy, with the hopes it would minimize the

tumors to the point it was safe to operate. Bobbi has been incredibly strong throughout her treatment, continuing

to work 40+ hours a week, despite her aggressive treatment and the toll it was taking on her body. However, as the

incredibly invasive and extensive surgery draws near, she will be unable to work for approximately 12 weeks post-

surgery, after which they will start another nine weeks of chemo. The loss of a second income with no end in sight

to medical bills will most certainly cause financial strain on their family. This is a family that would never ask any-

one for “help” from others, but would be the very first to give everything they have to help others. Let’s show them

how much they mean to all of us.

Life of a Seminarian –

Last month we focused on the First Pillar of Formation, “Human Formation”, used in the seminary to help our Seminarians

in the process of discernment. This month we will focus on the second formation called “Spiritual Formation”. Spiritual For-

mation is broken down into two areas; 1) Prayer, Sacraments, and Personal Holiness, and 2) Internal and External Forum.

A life of prayer is one of the most essential aspects of the priesthood. Prayer allows a priest to be able to give himself totally

and generously to the people of God in service and love in imitation of Jesus Christ, the High Priest. Being a Seminarian in-

cludes a structured prayer life in two distinct ways, a community prayer within the seminary and personal private prayer.

Both assist in bringing the Seminarian closer to God and hearing His Word. Each Seminarian is expected to spend time each

day in personal prayer and meditation at a “holy hour”, which is best to include Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament when

possible. The Liturgy of the Hours, daily Mass if possible, scripture reading and spiritual reading are all daily expectations.

Frequent confession, works of charity and devotions (especially the rosary) are essential to growing in holiness and faith. To

help develop a strong personal prayer life, as well as to aid discernment, each Seminarian chooses a Spiritual Director and

should meet regularly with his Director. Missing spiritual direction is not acceptable and is considered a serious formation

issue.

Seminarian visits with his Spiritual Director are considered internal forum, meaning, the conversations can never be re-

peated by the Spiritual Director to a 3rd party. The only exception to this rule would be in the case of physical mortal danger

involving the Directee or another person, unless such information was revealed under the seal of the Sacrament of Confes-

sion. Conversations with the Vocation Director are held in the external forum, which means what is said can be repeated to

the appropriate people, like the Bishop, his delegates and the Seminary Formation Team. Therefore, a Seminarian cannot

have the Vocation Director or his Assistant Priests as a Spiritual Director, due to the conflict of interest in how they can

share information.

Next month we will be looking at the Third Pillar of Formation, “Intellectual Formation”. I hope you are finding this type of

Congratulations to Ted and Nancy Nagel as our September KC Family of the Month. Ted

helped with the KC Fun Run and the KC Breakfast in August and Nancy helps with coffee

and donuts after the 8:00 AM Sunday Mass. Thank you Ted and Nancy for your time and

talent serving the Knights and our Parish!

Knights of Columbus - Wisconsin State Council Dear Brother Knight,

Your immediate action is needed to support national legislation that would strengthen the culture of life

in the United States.

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on H.R. 36, the Pain Capable Unborn

Child Protection Act. This life-saving legislation would ban abortions at the point when scientists agree

unborn children begin to feel pain in the womb (approximately 20 weeks).

Earlier this year, our Knights of Columbus/Marist Poll found that 59% of Americans support this type of ban on abortion,

including a majority who consider themselves pro-choice!

At our most recent Supreme Convention in St. Louis, we resolved “to speak out to our elected representatives about the

need to enact legislation protecting human life in all its stages.” I urge you to contact your Member of Congress today and

express your support for H.R. 36, the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.

You can do this easily by visiting our Action Alert Center to email your Congressman. You can also look up

your Congressman’s phone number and call their offices in Washington directly (just enter your zip code on the top right

corner to look up your Congressman’s information).
