Insurance Agents Report (Contents)

Worthy GKs, FSs & Newsletter Editors, GK Chris Bean, 11465, informed me that we have been assigned a new Insurance Field Agent. This is true. Brother Humberto Rivera, has recently become an agent and has been assigned to District 67 (as well as a few other districts). I spoke with him Tuesday evening and he is eager to be working with all of us. He’ll be up in the area in a few weeks and already has a few appointments scheduled. I’m working on getting a time and location where we, at least the senior council officers, can meet with him. This may become a short notice meeting but I’ll try to make it convenient for the majority.

Humberto can be reached at 310-590-6387 (cell) or [email protected].

District 67State of California Knights of ColumbusServing the five Lompoc, Santa Maria, and Vandenberg Councils

Welcome to 2013

Brothers, we are now halfway through the Columbian Year and all the councils are very busy with their normal activities plus all the support they provided to their parishes. Thanks for all that you have done. Recruiting new members is where we seem to be falling behind. Councils have conducted drives and have prospects out there but they haven’t taken their 1st Degree. Council 11465 has scheduled a 1st Degree on Wednesday 30 January that you can take advantage of if you don’t have one of your own before then.

The District is scheduling a 2nd Degree on Saturday 2 February at 1:00 PM at St Luis DeMontfort. Start now looking over your roster to identify those eligible. Then on Sunday 17 February, District 70 will be hosting a 3rd Degree in Moorpark. This is a long drive, but it is the closest one scheduled.

A gentle reminder: By January 31st councils are required to submit a 1728 Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity to Supreme. This report is essential so Supreme can keep its

Page 5: Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism January …Knights of Columbus January 2013 Page 5 of 12Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism tax free charity status. Supreme uses these

tax free charity status. Supreme uses these figures to calculate the hours and dollars spent on all our various service and charity programs. The report is also necessary to qualify for various annual awards. These numbers should be readily available from your Financial Secretary & Service Program managers. The form can be submitted on-line. Then the semi-annual audit will be due by 15 February.

We now have an active Insurance/benefits agent for our area. Field Agent Humberto Rivera, PGK is now the agent for the Santa Maria, Lompoc, & Santa Barbara councils. In the past few months he has spoken to many members as well has attended numerous council meetings and pot-lucks. He lives in the LA Area, but spends almost ½ of his time up here. He is only a phone call away for individual appointments. He can be reached at 310-590-6387.

John J Cantwell Assembly # 54Serving the Lompoc, Santa Maria, and Vandenberg Knights

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Sir Knights, in the month of December we celebrated the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. However, the celebration does not need to end there; we need to continue leading our lives in his name. Last month, one of our oldest members Larry Viegas, lost his wife Anne, after being married for almost 70 years. We had a small honor guard stand at her rosary, thank you Steve D. and Jim B.

Our annual Holiday Dinner is scheduled for Friday 4 January 2013 at the Santa Maria Radisson (near the airport). The Dinner is open to all Sir Knights, their ladies, and guests. The cost will be $28 per person. For more details contact our worthy Captain, Earl Severo at [email protected].

Do not forget our next meeting on Monday 14 January 7:00 PM at the Lompoc Council #3570 Council Hall, 523 E. Chestnut St. After the business meeting, Faithful Captain, Earl Severo will begin the discussion to host the 2014 Exemplification in the Santa Maria Area. Bring your Ideas with you. The February meeting will be on the 11th at St. Louis DeMontfort, 5075 Harp Road Orcutt.

The next opportunity to become a 4th Degree is on April 13th in Monterey. To qualify a Knight must have taken his 1st Degree before October 13 2012 and be a 3rd Degree. The next exemplification after that will be in Oxnard on November 2nd. Start now preparing you council members, we already have one new candidate read in.

We have two Call-Outs scheduled in January & February: On Saturday January 19th will be the Nino Celebration with Bishop Santo at St John Neumann in Santa Maria. Show time is 4:30 PM. On Saturday February 2nd will be the annual A.C.H.E.S (sponsored by the Catholic Daughters) at Purisima in Lompoc. The Celebrant is Bishop Curry. Show time is 9:30 AM.

Censored Canadian Pro-Life Student Group Finally Allowed to Formby Steven Ertelt | Langley, Canada | LifeNews.com | 12/6/12 6:28 PM

Students at Kwantlen Polytechnic University have the right to form a pro-life group, after an initial rejection by the student union of their application to form a pro-life club on campus.

As LifeNews recently reported, the Kwantlen Student Association (KSA), which represents the students from the university’s four Vancouver Metro area campuses, explained its decision by stating that the creation of the Protectores Vitae club “is clearly against our own standing policy on Abortion and a Woman’s Right to Choose.”

They responded to the initial decision by getting the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) to take their case and weigh legal action.

Today, in the midst of preparing to file a lawsuit against their student association for discrimination, the pro-life student group at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in B.C. has been granted full club status, according to the National Campus Life Network, a Canadian network for student pro-life groups.

As NCLN tells LifeNews, the Runner, the Kwantlen student newspaper, reported that the Kwantlen Student Association (KSA) reversed its earlier decision during a two-hour in-camera session on December 5th, and has now granted Protectores Vitae (Protectors of Life) formal status as a campus club. The specific content of any motions from the

meeting was not made available, nor was the record of how the individual board members voted. Oliver Capko, the president of Protectores Vitae, was contacted later that evening by Christopher Girodat, the Chairperson of the KSA Executive Committee, who informed him of the decision.

“I am relieved that the issue has been resolved,” said Oliver. “After working towards this all semester, it is great to finally be accepted and treated like other clubs on campus.”

NCLN says the decision by the Kwantlen Student Association was a reversal of its November 9th decision, which rejected the group’s application on the grounds that it conflicted with the student union’s pro-choice policy on abortion. Protectores Vitae secured legal representation from the Justice Centre, and demanded that the student association rescind their decision and, when the KSA did not, Protectores Vitae prepared to file a lawsuit.

“The Justice Centre has invested a lot of time in legal research and preparing the court documents, but we are happy that it will not be necessary to commence a court action against this discrimination,” stated Calgary lawyer John Carpay, President of the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms.

“This has not been the first time such discrimination against pro-life groups has happened on university campuses,” commented Anastasia Pearse on behalf of the National Campus Life Network. “We hope that other student associations will learn from Kwantlen’s example so that this won’t happen again.”

The students of Protectores Vitae, who are currently in the midst of exam season, plan to begin club activities on campus in the New Year.

“Now that we no longer have to fight against discrimination, we can actually focus on why we wanted to start this club in the first place,” said Oliver. “It’s important that bioethical issues, like abortion, are raised on campus and we look forward to being part of that conversation here at Kwantlen.”
