Twitter Review (September) 16
A Message from the Principal:
Hello Chardon Middle School Families -
It is difficult to believe we have completed three weeks of
instruction already. Students and staff are raising the expectations
daily to continually develop their 21st century skills. Please inquire
with your child and CMS for the latest best practice learning
opportunities that can be supported outside the school day.
The new traffic flow at CMS has been smooth, as we continue to monitor this
process and how we can provide a safe environment for all stakeholders.
Our students will focus on not only becoming outstanding students but also
wonderful stewards in the Chardon community. With that being stated,
September is service month at CMS. Please check our website for the latest
information from our school counselors and how your child can develop their
service foundation.
I encourage you to continue to check out the webpage to find out about all of the
events and activities happening at Chardon Middle School. It is updated regularly
to keep you informed. Please be sure to follow me on twitter at @ChardonMiddle
for the most up to date information at CMS. I am starting an initiative to reach
1K followers by the end of the school year, please consider being 1 of the 1K.
I am very proud of all that CMS has to offer our students. If you should have any
questions, comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Go Hilltoppers!
Principal Higham

When reporting an absence on the attendance hotline, please be prepared to
clearly state the following information:

September is Service Month for the School Counseling Dept. Express ways CMS can offer service to others and help those in need. Share with the counselors how you provide service or volunteer for others in your community. Have an idea to share about service for the school year, create a plan and present it to the counselors.
September will be about Service in our Community, with that we have organized a day to model this to our students and community. A group of CMS staff can help Ronald McDonald House families on Sunday, Sept. 27th from 9am - 12pm by cooking a brunch for the families. Staff please feel free to bring your child 13 years or older with you to help. The cost would be $20 per family to purchase the groceries needed to feed @100 people that morning. Its truly an overwhelming feeling, hearing some of the stories, and meeting people from all around the world that come to utilize our medical services and RMcDH here in CLE. Any questions, please ask. If you have an organization near and dear to you that you would like to see supported throughout the school year, please share and we can coordinate an activity.
School Fees:
School fees are determined by grade and the courses the students are
enrolled in.
School Lunches (more info):
Please be aware school lunches are NOW $3.00.

September Band Notes ~Please make sure your name is on your instrument case, book, and folder. It helps us immensely when students "lose" their instruments! ~All percussionists need to have mallets and sticks every day. ~Playing tests will be coming soon. Please check Google Classroom for testing details. ~Our Crescendo Club Cheese and Sausage sale will be kicking off on September 10 and concluding September 24. The Boosters are VITAL to our success, and we have a sales goal of between $15,000 and $20,000 this year--and somehow that's never enough. These funds supplement all the grade levels and music programs. We will also be kicking off our Patron Program concurrent with the sale. If you have any questions or would like to help with the sale please contact Ms. Paroubek. Crescendo Club meets the first Tuesday of every month at 7:15 PM in the High School band room. All are welcome!

6th Grade Newsletter for September 2015
Although the transition from elementary to middle school can sometimes
be a bit challenging, we are off to a great start! Most students are getting
around fine and the lock/locker problems seem to be getting fewer and
fewer. Most are also coming with charged Chrome books! Our new 6th
graders are extremely cooperative and appear anxious to learn!
ORGANIZATION is the key for 6th graders to be successful! Here are
some tips that have worked in the past:
• Students need a 2-inch binder or Trapper that goes to every class with them. There should be a 2-pocket folder for each class (one pocket marked “TO DO”- the other pocket marked “DONE.” When students receive a homework sheet, it goes in the “TO DO” side of the class folder. When the student finishes that homework, he/she should put it in the “DONE” side. They should also have a HOME folder for anything needed to be signed or given to a
parent/guardian. Their ASSIGNMENT PLANNER also will fit in their big binder and they should record ALL their homework in the planner - something for EVERY class, every day. As they finish the homework, they can check it off in the planner.
• Students also need a pencil pouch/box with: couple pencils, black or blue pen, a red pen, a dry erase marker, calculator, and 1 pack post-its. (Some students are putting WAY too much in their pencil pouches!)
• If students need help getting organized, they should ask their RED or homeroom teacher for some help.
• When a student receives a handout or homework assignment it should immediately be placed in the proper folder. Some students just stick papers inside their Assignment Planners and hope to find it later (this does not work for long!).
Some other things to keep in mind:
o Students should write something for every class for every school day in their assignment notebook. They have been told that even if they have no homework, they should write “no homework!” Our teacher web sites should be a back-up to the planner in case a student is absent or forgot to write down an assignment.
o It is a good idea for parents/guardians to check the assignment planner (at least for a few weeks) to insure that students are recording all assignments.
o Students should be getting to class on time by now. They need to plan when the best times to go to their locker that will get them to class on time. They should not go to their lockers after every class.
o Many students are already coming to class without basic supplies like pencils, paper and calculators. Please encourage them to be prepared.
o Students should have an independent reading book with them at all times. When they are close to finishing one book, they should have another ready to go.
o Establish a routine for homework completion (including nightly reading) and a time and place to charge Chrome books.
“There is no more important homework than reading. Research shows that the
highest achieving students are those who devote leisure time to reading… Recently,
the largest-ever international study of reading found that the single most important
predictor of academic success is the amount of time children spend reading books,
more important even than economic or social status. And one of the few predictors
of high achievement in math and science is the amount of time children devote to
pleasure reading.” ― Nancie Atwell, The Reading Zone: How to Help Kids Become Skilled, Passionate, Habitual, Critical Readers
Communication: The 6th grade teachers feel that communication is so
important and we want you to feel comfortable contacting us. We respond
very quickly to e-mails (Chardon website/Middle School/Team Websites) or
you may always call the school (285-4062) and leave a message. We will
call you back. 6A teachers meet as a team from 10:36 -10:58 each day
and 6B teachers meet from 11:01 – 11:23.
We look forward to a successful and rewarding 6th grade year!
Greetings from Team 7A! We are settling into a great school year! It was very
nice to meet all the parents at Open House. Home/School communication is very important
throughout the school year. Messages through Infinite Campus or e-mail through the
Chardon website is the easiest and fastest way to contact all of the teachers.

Please make sure your child has all his/her supplies in school. Having necessary
materials and good organization are a key part of success.
Homework for team 7A classes is available on our team website:
www.cms7thgrade.weebly.com. Check it out!! All of the teachers’ sites are located there.
This makes it easier for parents and students to all team information in one convenient
place. Please feel free to check this site daily to keep up with your
child’s assignments.
Your child’s grade is updated frequently on Infinite Campus. Our team planning time
is 11:26-11:48 every day. We would be happy to meet with any parent at that time. Please
contact the office and set up an appointment if needed.
Our seventh grade class will be going on an overnight field trip to Chicago on May
11-13. Permission slips and how and when to pay for the field is all done on-line on our
website. An informational meeting will be held on Thursday, September 17 at 7:30. We are
looking forward to a fabulous time!
Team 8B is off to a great 2015-2016 school year! We are very excited about what is happening in
our classes, and we hope your children are too. Try to have a conversation everyday to review what
your child is doing in class. Be persistent, when you ask your child, “What did you do today?” Don’t
accept the answer “nothing.”
To keep up with your children’s homework, we invite your child to share Google Classroom with you for
their homework. This will allow you to keep up with what is being taught in the classes and what your
children are learning. We are no longer using Weebly.
Mr. Farrow science classes will begin their first geology unit by examining the structure of the Earth and
how it affects us in our world today.
Columbus found his way to the Americas in Mr. Goss’ class. Students have explored maps of the “New
World” and learned how early European explorers navigated by the stars. Coming up, the English will
carve out an existence on the Atlantic coast. Soon we will be digging deep into how growing dislike
between English Colonists and the Mother Country led to the American Revolution.
In Language Arts we are off to a great start of school by reviewing literary terms. It has been wonderful
getting to know the students. In class, we dove right into the content and have already reviewed some
strategies for improving our writing and reading.
Mrs. Debevec's Pre-Algebra classes have been hard at work applying order of operations to
expressions and performing computations involving integer exponents. They have also been
writing, simplifying and evaluating variable expressions.
In Mr. Bonvissuto’s Algebra class, we are learning the basics of the course. These include order of
operations, expressions and equations. In Geometry, we are laying the groundwork of points, lines &
planes. The entire course will then be built upon these key concepts.
From Lori Strickland, Med, RN, CRN
If a Student becomes ill at School…
If a student is ill, they must report to the school clinic to be evaluated by the nurse.
Students should not be texting or calling parents on their own. Students who contact parents via cell phone will receive a cell phone infraction from the assistant principal.
Medication at School
Any student requiring medication at school, either prescription or nonprescription, will need to
follow Chardon Board of Education medication policy. School policy requires that both parent and physician complete a school medication permission form before any medication is administered. Policy also requires that an adult bring medication to school in a properly labeled
prescription container or in original packaging, if it is nonprescription. We can not administer
medication at school unless the school medication policy is followed. Those students using
asthma inhalers and epinephrine auto-injectors have the option of carrying and self-administering their medications if both physician and parent have granted this permission on
medication form. A medication form can be obtained at school or on the school website
at www.chardon.k12.oh.us
Pull-tabs for Ronald McDonald House
Once again we will be collecting pull-tabs from beverage cans this school year. A
collection bin is located in the clinic for pull-tabs brought in from home. Please help by
collecting pull-tabs at home. The money obtained from the recycling of the pull-tabs
helps to support the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland - a home away from home
for families of children with serious illness who require extended hospitalization in one of the Cleveland hospitals. Please help us support this worthwhile charity.
