The Summer School starts from the awareness of the va-lue of the Massaciuccoli Lake (Massarosa, Lucca) and its territory. As main element of characterization and unifica-tion of the micro-sites along its coasts, the Massaciuccoli Lake is the central theme of the Summer School 2017. The aim is to redesign the natural, archaeological and anthropic contexts, neighboring with a still partially untouched na-tural environment. Through a systemic vision that takes into account the environmental, physical, historical, cultural and socio-economic aspects, students will develop four main themes: the marina and the new Lipu headquarters (currently housing a museum), the lake nature trails with the design of new birdwatching si-ghts, the connection and rede-velopment of the areas of the Roman Villa of Venulei and the Niquila stone quarries. The results, in addition to re-appropriation and safe-

guarding of the natural envi-ronment, will be related to the generation of new economic, touristic and manufacturing opportunities linked to the landscape and to the surroun-ding territories. The final pro-ducts of the Summer School will stimulate new possibili-ties for the inhabitants of ter-ritory and, above all, of the small town of Massaciuccoli, for the small and medium-si-zed enterprises operating in the territory as well as for the local institutions, in terms of contribution to improve the awareness of their own poten-tial and wealth.

The workshop involves stu-dents and young professionals working together on the Ver-silia area, for a ten days-full immersion team work. Parti-cular attention is setted to the public space, where the shared collective values of the urbs had formed. That spaces show a deep formal and substan-tial crisis of identity, to which we are called to give answers going over the traditional mo-dels.The case study selected is the waterfront of Marina di Pie-trasanta: a context with a high environmental value and a great economic potential, but actually mined by a strong so-cial fragility. The workshop starts from the comprehension of the histori-cal evolution of the territory. Thanks to the several interna-tional experiences of the tea-ching staff, the workshop aims to define a scenery of change according to different scales, from the territorial to the ar-chitectural one.

The methodology that isap-plied provides the experimen-tation of the most innovative tools and the collaboration between the international guests and the local subjects: university, administrations, professionals, associations, enterprises, artists, and arti-sans.The workshop includes two public meetings, important moments of exchange within participants, citizens, profes-sionals, and local public admi-nistrations.The objective of the workshop is to think up hypothesis for the urban regeneration of the public spaces through archi-tecture, design and arts – as in a sort of renewed Bauhaus – in order to support their re-ap-propriation from a physical, social and economic point of view.

The design themes de-signed for the Summer School 2014 concerned different areas of the ter-ritory belonging to the City of Pietrasanta. Starting from the terri-tory the planned areas are places that need spe-cial attention in terms of environmental quality, open space, urban and social relations green. The chosen areas belong to the town Tonfano, Fo-cette, Motrone, the co-ast and part of the Viale Apua, including Versilia-

na park. The requalification projects have started from considering the va-rious local identities and from this point proposals arose of physical and economic recovery. The interventions were limited to open spaces, where only small bu-ilt insertions and street furniture have allowed a careful requalification which follows the needs of the tourism inhabitan-ts of local identity.

The workshop involves stu-dents and young professionals working together on the Versi-lia area, for two weeks-full im-mersion teamwork. Special attention is setted to public spaces, where the sha-red collective values of the urbs had formed. Those spa-ces shows a deep formal and substantial crisis of identity: the focal point of this work-shop was the regeneration of the area, breaking through the traditional models. The case study is an artisan area called “Due Laghi”: a con-text with a high environmental value and a great economic potential, but mined by strong fragilities. The workshop starts from the comprehension of the histori-cal evolution of this area; with the help of an international te-aching staff, it aims to define scenery of changes according to different scales, from the territorial to the architectural one.The methodology that is ap-plied provides the experimen-tation of the most innovative tools and the collaboration between the international

guests and the local subjects: university, administrations, professionals, associations, en-terprises, and particularly ar-tists and artisans. In the first week it is developed the regeneration project; in the second week, students are involved in a self-construction experience on the project area, in collaboration with the ar-tists and artisans of the “2 Luoghi” group. The workshop includes public meetings, im-portant moments of exchange within participants, citizens, professionals and local public administrations. The objective of the workshop is to develop hypothesis for the urban regeneration of the spaces through architecture, arts and self-construction in order to support their re-ap-propriation from a physical, social and economic point of view.

The intervention: the area of Due Laghi is intere-sting for its complex and diversified nature, rich in elements of historical and environmental values; this area has been recently oc-cupied by a group of arti-sans and artist so the first aim of the summer school is a new gate to promote the visibility and accessi-bility of this area, a sym-bolic and representative element , visible and re-cognizable from the road; the second team work on a pedestrian path along the lakeshore, an ideal line of contact between the ar-tisan area and the lake, with integrated benches and stalls for open hair exhibition. The last the-me is about new spaces for the art, facilities for art exhibitions, designing a removable structure for art works and objects, a structure that has to in-tegrate with the naturali-stic character of the area and its existing buildings, a stage but not only, also platform for music and cultural events made up of modular elements that could be used as seating or basis for sculpture too.

The Versilia Summer School involves students and young professionals working to-gether on the Versilia area, from the mountains to the sea, for a ten-days full immersion teamwork. Special attention is paid to public spaces along the river Versilia where the shared collective values of the urbs had formed. The river Versilia is the place to settle: it provided access to marble, water for drinking, ir-rigating and stone cutting, but now it has disappeared from daily life, due to dikes, traffic, dangers of flooding and the large industrial plots.Nevertheless, the water is cle-an, it’s color is a delight for the eye, it’s natural setting is bewildering and the history of the valley is remarkable: it provided marble for the Re-naissance art and architecture and was explored by Miche-langelo.The workshop in Seravezza is about the paradoxes of 1) access to the river and sa-fety, 2) recreation and nature pro-tection, 3) bathing culture and indu-strial landscape.

How can we create aware-ness of the river as a place for comfort and reconciliation? How could the river tie the very different landscapes of marble alps, agricultural hills, small towns, large industries and sprawl together? How can Fiume Versilia be loved again? How would artist and architect Michelangelo respond to our needs and knowlegde, capital and politics, tools and cars? For this we study the present situation of solutions and di-lemmas, research interactions of geology, villages and river banks and design gardens, artworks, small architectures and infrastructure for good health, bathing, recreation and meeting, and we want to design Observatorium style: works of imagination and ma-gic added to places with poten-tial for wonder, highly accessi-ble and inviting, symbolic for the present culture of the site and multifunctional, celebra-ting generosity and creating an awareness for man’s culti-vation of the wilderness.

Site Intervention: the are-as of interest are four, di-vided in four different te-ams of work: the first area includes the adjacent part of the source of the river, the pool of water of De-siata, the marble Quarry of Cappella, the village of Fabiano and the Church of Cappella; the second one includes the central area of the territory of Se-ravezza and the area over-looking the village of Cor-vaia up to Pescarella. The third group intervention is setted from the Pescarella

‘s bridge to the Red bridge over the Aurelia and inclu-des a large portion of ter-ritory characterised by flat trend, directly in contact with the Versilia river, a territory strongly ruled by the presence of industrial and agricultural areas. The last area of interest is the final part of the Versilia ri-ver, from the bridge over Sipe street to the sea, on its right bank there is the natural reserve of Lago di Porta, on the left one the territory is marked by the Versilia Golf Club.
