Abebe’s Lost Treasure Silver-Beaked Owl

The Silver-Beaked Owl is an impressive bird, but one that is rarely seen. It sits silently, watching the world from its roost high up in the tree of wisdom. When it takes flight, it glides gracefully through the sky, its golden eyes shining brightly in the darkness. It is a magical sight.

Whenever the Silver-Beaked Owl lands on the ground, it leaves a soft, silvery feather behind. This feather brings good fortune, so finding one will move the hero three steps closer to the chalice.

Diranosaurus

The deadly dragon, Diranosaurus, is a sinister creature with piercing amber eyes. It lurks in lakes and underground caves, listening for the footsteps of unsuspecting travellers. It silently stalks its prey before pouncing. It is a fearsome beast.

If a hero is unlucky enough to disturb Diranosaurus, he or she is captured and taken to the creature’s damp and dingy lair deep in the Cryptic Caves. There the hero must remain until the purple sand timer has run through.

Background Story Highlight the different language features in the background story.

Long ago, on an island far out in the Great Ocean, there lived a wise man. His name was Abebe Giorgis. So wise was Abebe that people came from across the globe, battling ocean storms and the rocky coasts around the island, to seek his advice. They brought gifts of gold and coins and jewels and soon Abebe became a very rich man. But Abebe and his family were simple folk, who had no need for gold and coins and jewels. So Abebe buried his treasure high up in the Acacia Mountains on the far side of the island. The location of the buried treasure was a secret. The secret has developed into a legend…

Before he died, Abebe drew a map to show his sons where he had hidden the treasure, although he advised them not to dig it up unless they really needed to.

After many years, Abebe’s sons decided to leave the island. They no longer needed their belongings, so they sold everything, including the forgotten map, to a local trader. The trader had heard stories about Abebe’s treasure and could barely contain his excitement when he saw the map. Soon he began selling copies of it to the treasure hunters who came from far and wide.

As a result, many men and women have gone in search of Abebe’s treasure, but no one has ever returned…

Will you be the first to make it through the dense Acacia Forest, past the lair of the deadly Diranosaurus, and to the top of the Acacia Mountains where Abebe’s treasure still lies?

How to Play Abebe’s Lost Treasure Players: This is a game for 3–6 players, aged 7 and above.

Aim: The aim of the game is to be the first to make it around the board and uncover the long lost buried treasure of Abebe Giorgis.

You will need:

• The board • Two dice

• Explorer counters (one for each player) • Buried treasure • Acacia trees

• Sand timer

Preparation:

• Unfold the board.

• Position the Acacia trees in the Acacia Forest, beneath the Acacia Mountains.

• Place the buried treasure where shown at the top of the Acacia Mountains.

• Position all counters on the START square. • Place the dice and the sand timer in the centre

of the board.

How to play: 1. Each player in turn throws the die. The player

who throws the highest number starts. 2. He/she then rolls both dice and moves

the number of spaces shown. Players should move around the board in a clockwise direction.

3. The player to the left of the player who

started then rolls the dice and moves around the board the appropriate number of spaces.

4. Turn continues to pass around the players in this way.

5. If a double six is thrown, the player may take another turn.

6. Players may have to move more or fewer spaces, take another turn or miss a turn depending on the characters they land on as they move around the board.

7. Players should follow the rules detailed below when they land on character spaces.

8. The game ends when a player reaches the end of the board and the buried treasure, although players must roll the exact number needed to land on the space on which the buried treasure is located before they can win.

Rules:

• If a player lands on the Curly Kittimaids, they take an extra roll of the dice.

• If a player lands on the Silver-Beaked Owl, they move forward three spaces.

• If a player lands on the Diranosaurus, they must move straight to its lair and remain there. You can only return to the game after the purple sand timer has run through.

The winner: The game is over when a player reaches the end of the board. The winner is the first person to make it through the Acacia Forest and land on the buried treasure.

How to Play Musical Chairs

Firstly, choose some lovely music. It might be nice to

choose something that everyone likes. Try not to play it

too loudly though, or the neighbours might complain.

Arrange some comfortable chairs nicely in a row, all facing

the same way if at all possible. Make sure that there is one

less chair than there are people playing the game or it

won’t work very well.

Gather lots of people together and play the music.

Everyone moves quickly round the chairs in the same

direction. Try to make sure that no-one holds onto a chair

as this is cheating.

When the music stops, everyone has to sit down carefully

on a nice empty chair. The person left standing is out of the

game, unfortunately.

Play the game until there is just one person left. They are

the lucky winner and you might want to give them a prize.
