War of Austrian Succession Upon the death of Charles VI, Maria Theresa took the throne of Austria.

King Frederick II of Prussia took advantage of the situation by invading an Austrian area called Silesia. France then entered to fight against Austria. Great Britain then entered to fight against France and Prussia.

War was fought within three main areas: Europe (Prussia took Silesia; France took Austrian Netherlands) Far East (areas in India) North America (British took over French fortress of Louisbourg)

War of Austrian Succession After seven years of combat, all parties agreed to the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in

1748.

The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle: Returned all occupied properties to previous owners. Except Silesia (Prussia refused to return this land to Austria)

This meant another war would occur between Austria and Prussia.

Seven Year’s War (1756-1763) Austria refused to permanently give up Silesia.

Maria Theresa rebuilt her army and tried to break up the alliance between France and Prussia.

New Rivalries now developed throughout the world: Britain vs. France – Over colonies Austria vs. Prussia – Over Silesia France vs. Prussia – France created a new alliance with Austria Russia vs. Prussia – Feared a Prussian take over in central Europe. Britain vs. France, Russia, and Austria – Created an alliance with Prussia

These rivalries led to a worldwide war in three main areas: Europe India North America
