ONE AMERICAN’S STORYIn search of liberty, Haym Salomon moved from

Europe to New York sometime between 1764 and

1775. He was a Jew from Poland. Salomon soon

became a successful merchant and banker. During

the war, Salomon supported the Patriot cause.

When the British captured New York in 1776,

many Patriots fled but Salomon stayed. The British

arrested him. Salomon spoke many languages. The

British thought he could help them deal with foreign

merchants, so they let him out of prison. Salomon

used this opportunity to help other prisoners escape.

In 1778, the British wanted to arrest him again,

so he fled to Philadelphia and continued to aid the

Patriots. He loaned the new government more than

$600,000, which was never repaid.

Like Salomon, many people made hard choices

about which side to support during the

Revolutionary War. This section discusses those

choices and the obstacles Americans faced in the

war’s early years.

Americans DividedThe issue of separating from Great Britain divided American society.Opinion polls did not exist in the 1700s, so we don’t know exactly howmany people were on each side. But historians estimate that roughly 20to 30 percent of Americans were Loyalists, roughly 40 to 45 percent werePatriots, and the rest remained neutral. Most Americans did not supportthe Revolution.

Both Patriots and Loyalists came from all walks of life and all parts ofAmerica. In general, New England and Virginia had high numbers ofPatriots. Loyalists were numerous in cities, in New York State, and in the

South. Many Loyalists worked for the British government or wereclergy in the Church of England. Some Quakers were Loyalists,although many wanted peace. (Their faith taught that war was wrong.)

The war divided Native Americans, too. For instance, someIroquois nations fought with the British and others with theAmericans. Those Native Americans who joined the British fearedthat if the Americans won, they would take Native American land.Some Native Americans who lived near colonists and interacted withthem sided with the Americans.

African Americans also fought on both sides. At first, slave ownersfeared that African Americans who had guns might lead slave revolts.Therefore, few states allowed African Americans to enlist, or sign upwith the army. Then a British governor offered freedom to any enslavedperson who joined the British army. Many slaves ran away to fight forthe British. In response, most states began to accept African-American

soldiers. In all, about 5,000 African Americans servedin the Continental Army. Many African Americanswho did so hoped that American independence wouldbring greater equality.

Differences over the war split families, too. Forexample, Benjamin Franklin’s son William tookBritain’s side. The father and son stopped speaking.

Creating an ArmyBecause not everyone supported the war, raising anarmy was difficult. The army also faced other prob-lems. In June 1775, George Washington became thecommander of the Continental Army. At first, thisnew national army was formed from state militias,made up of untrained and undisciplined volunteers.

After Congress created the Continental Army, menbegan to enlist, but most of them didn’t stay long. Atthe start of the war, Congress asked men to enlist onlyfor one year. Later Congress did lengthen the term ofservice. When the soldiers’ time was up, they wenthome. As a result, Washington’s army never num-bered more than 17,000 men.

Congress’s inability to supply the army also frus-trated Washington. The soldiers needed everything—blankets, shoes, food, and even guns and ammunition.Angrily, Washington wrote, “Could I have foreseenwhat I have, and am likely to experience, no consider-ation upon earth should have induced [persuaded] meto accept this command.”

Many women tried to help the army. MarthaWashington and other wives followed their husbands toarmy camps. The women cooked, did laundry, and

At the age of 16, GeorgeWashington worked as a sur-veyor, setting land boundaries inthe wilderness. He learned tohandle hardship by hunting forfood and sleeping outdoors.

In the French and Indian War,Washington had many brusheswith death. Yet he wrote, “Iheard the bullets whistle, and,believe me, there is somethingcharming in the sound.”

That war made him the mostfamous American officer. Peopleloved him for his courage. Ascommander of the ContinentalArmy, Washington’s popularityhelped unite Americans.

nursed sick or wounded soldiers. A few women even helped fight.Mary Hays earned the nickname “Molly Pitcher” by carrying waterto tired soldiers during a battle. Deborah Sampson dressed as a man,enlisted, and fought in several engagements.

Building an army was crucial to Washington’s plan. To theBritish, the Americans were disorganized, inexperienced rebels.The British thought that if they won a decisive battle, theAmericans would give up. By contrast, Washington’s main goal was tosurvive. To do so, he needed to keep an army in the field, win some bat-tles—no matter how small—and avoid a crushing defeat. He knew hecould not hope to win a major battle until he had a large, well-equipped army.

Struggle for the Middle StatesAs Chapter 6 explains, Washington had forced the British to retreatfrom Boston in March 1776. He then hurried his army to New YorkCity, where he expected the British to go next. One British goal was tooccupy coastal cities so that their navy could land troops and supplies inthose cities. From there, they could launch their military campaigns.

Washington’s hunch was correct. In July 1776, Britain’s GeneralWilliam Howe arrived in New York with a large army. Then in August,more soldiers arrived, including about 9,000 Hessian mercenaries. Amercenary is a professional soldierhired to fight for a foreign country.British soldiers usually signed up forlife—which discouraged enlistment.So Britain needed mercenaries, whomit hired from the German states.

For several months, the British andAmerican armies fought for NewYork State. Finally, the British forcedWashington to retreat through NewJersey. By December, when the Amer-ican army crossed the Delaware Riverinto Pennsylvania, it was in terriblecondition. Charles Willson Peale, aPhiladelphia painter who watched thecrossing, saw one muddy soldier who“had lost all his clothes. He was in anold, dirty blanket jacket, his beardlong, and his face so full of sores hecould not clean it.” To Peale’s shock,the soldier called his name. He wasPeale’s brother!

Political writer Thomas Paine alsowitnessed the hard conditions and thesoldiers’ low spirits on the retreat. To

urge them to keep fighting, Paine published the first in a series of pam-phlets called The American Crisis.

A VOICE FROM THE PAST

These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshinepatriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he thatstands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.

Washington hoped a victory would encourage his weary men. He alsoknew that he must attack the British quickly because most of his soldierswould leave once their enlistments ended on December 31.

Late on December 25, 1776, Washington’s troops rowed across the icyDelaware River to New Jersey. From there, they marched in bitter, early-morning cold to Trenton to surprise the Hessians, some of whom weresleeping after their Christmas celebration. The Americans captured orkilled more than 900 Hessians and gained needed supplies.Washington’s army won another victory at Princeton eight days later.These victories proved that the American general was better than theBritish had thought. The American army began to attract new recruits.

Britain’s StrategyMeanwhile, the British were pursuing a strategy—an overall plan ofaction—to seize the Hudson River Valley. If successful, they would cut offNew England from the other states. The strategy called for three armiesto meet at Albany, New York. General John Burgoyne would lead a forcesouth from Canada. Lieutenant Colonel Barry St. Leger would lead hisarmy from Lake Ontario down the Mohawk Valley. Burgoyne expectedGeneral Howe to follow the Hudson north from New York City.

Burgoyne left Canada in June 1777with an army that included British,Hessians, and Iroquois. In July, theycaptured Fort Ticonderoga.

Called “Gentleman Johnny” by hissoldiers, Burgoyne enjoyed travelingslowly and throwing parties to cele-brate victories. After Ticonderoga, hisdelays gave the Americans time to cutdown trees to block his route. Theyalso burned crops and drove off cattle,leaving the countryside bare of sup-plies for the British troops.

Things grew rougher during thelast 25 miles of Burgoyne’s march toAlbany. On a map, the route lookedeasy, but it really crossed a swampywilderness. The army had to buildbridges and roads. Burgoyne tookfour weeks to reach the Hudson. Stillconfident, he looked forward to therendezvous, or meeting, with St.Leger and Howe in Albany.

On August 4, Burgoyne received amessage from Howe. He would notbe coming north, Howe wrote, because he had decided to invadePennsylvania to try to capture General Washington and Philadelphia—where the Continental Congress met. “Success be ever with you,” wroteHowe. Yet Burgoyne needed Howe’s soldiers, not his good wishes.

Howe did invade Pennsylvania. In September 1777, he defeated butdid not capture Washington at the Battle of Brandywine. Howe thenoccupied Philadelphia. In October, Washington attacked Howe atGermantown. Washington lost the battle, however, and retreated.

Battles Along the MohawkAs Burgoyne received Howe’s message, St. Leger faced his ownobstacle in reaching Albany. In the summer of 1777, he was try-ing to defeat a small American force at Fort Stanwix in theMohawk River valley of New York. St. Leger’s forces includedIroquois led by Mohawk chief Joseph Brant, also calledThayendanegea (THI-•ehn•DAHG•ee).

Brant and his sister, Molly, had strong ties to the British. Mollywas a British official’s wife, and Joseph was a convert to the Churchof England. Both Joseph and Molly tried to convince the Iroquois tofight for the British, who upheld Iroquois rights to their land.

During August 1777, American general Benedict Arnold led a smallarmy up the Mohawk River. He wanted to chase the British away from

Fort Stanwix. Arnold sent a captured Loyalist and some Iroquois whowere American allies to spread the rumor that he had a large army.

The trick worked. St. Leger’s troops were afraid they were about to beoutnumbered. The army retreated so fast that it left behind tents, can-non, and supplies. Because of St. Leger’s flight and Howe’s refusal tofollow the strategy, no one was left to rendezvous with Burgoyne.

Saratoga: A Turning PointBy this time, Burgoyne’s army was running out of supplies, and it neededhorses. The general sent a raiding party into Vermont to see what itcould find. The raiding party encountered New England troops, whobadly defeated it at the Battle of Bennington on August 16, 1777.

Despite this setback, Burgoyne’s army headed slowly toward Albany. Onthe way, it met a powerful Continental Army force led by General HoratioGates. Gates’s soldiers were waiting on a ridge called Bemis Heights, nearSaratoga, New York. There the Americans had created fortifications, orbuilt-up earthen walls, behind which to fight. The Polish engineer TadeuszKosciuszko (TAH•deh•oosh KAWSH•choosh•kaw) had helped theAmericans do this.

Burgoyne would have to break through the fortifications to proceedto Albany. On September 19, he attacked. While Gates commanded theAmericans on the ridge, Benedict Arnold led an attack on nearby

In October 1996, one writer urged other students to getinvolved in that year’s election, saying, “Even though you will notbe able to vote yet, you can still influence your parents to do so.”

Freeman’s Farm. His men repeatedly charged theBritish and inflicted heavy casualties. Still, the Britishheld their position.

On October 7, another battle broke out. AgainArnold led daring charges against the British. Althoughhundreds of muskets were firing at him, he gallopedthrough the battlefield “like a madman,” a sergeant latersaid. Frightened, Burgoyne’s Hessian mercenariesbegan to fall back. Eventually, a bullet tore intoArnold’s leg and stopped him. Even so, the Americansforced Burgoyne to retreat.

Burgoyne’s army moved slowly through heavy rain toa former army camp at Saratoga. By the time theyarrived, the men were exhausted. Some fell in the mudand slept in their wet uniforms. The Continental Armythen surrounded Burgoyne’s army and fired on it day and night withoutstopping. Burgoyne decided to surrender. The series of conflicts that ledto this surrender is known as the Battles of Saratoga.

The Battles of Saratoga had two very different consequences. AsBenedict Arnold was recovering from his wound, he married a womanwho was a Loyalist. Over time, Arnold came to feel that Congress hadnot rewarded him enough for his heroic actions at Saratoga and otherbattles. Influenced by his bitterness and his wife, he betrayed his army.In 1780, he agreed to turn over an American fort to the British.Although his plot was discovered before he could carry it out, heescaped. Even today, the name Benedict Arnold is used to mean traitor.

On the positive side, the victory at Saratoga was a turning point in theRevolution. It caused European nations to think that the Americansmight win their war for independence. As you will read in Section 2,several European nations decided to help America in its struggle.

ONE AMERICAN’S STORYTo defeat the British Empire, the United States needed a foreign

ally. An ally is a country that agrees to help another country

achieve a common goal. The ideal ally would share

America’s goal of defeating Britain. So the United States

turned to France—Britain’s long-time enemy.

In 1776, Congress sent Benjamin Franklin to France to

persuade it to be the ally of the United States. Famous

for his experiments with electricity, Franklin became a

celebrity in Paris. He wrote to his daughter, saying that

medallions with his likeness were popular there.

After America’s victory at Saratoga, the French agreed to

an alliance. This section explains how the war expanded

with foreign aid.

Help from AbroadFrance was still bitter over its defeat by Britain in the French and IndianWar, in which France lost its North American colonies. The Frenchhoped to take revenge on the British by helping Britain’s Americancolonies break free. In 1776, France began to give secret aid to theAmericans. However, the French didn’t want to lose to Britain a secondtime. That is why they didn’t publicly ally themselves with the UnitedStates until after the Americans had proved they could win battles.

After hearing of the American victory at Saratoga, King Louis XVI ofFrance recognized U.S. independence. In 1778, France signed twotreaties of alliance with the United States. By doing so, France went to

war with Britain. As part of its new alliance, France sent badly neededfunds, supplies, and troops to America.

In 1779, France persuaded its ally Spain to help the Americans. Spainwas also Britain’s rival. The Spanish governor of Louisiana, GeneralBernardo de Gálvez, acted quickly. He captured the British strongholdsof Natchez and Baton Rouge in the lower Mississippi Valley.

From there, his small army went on to take Mobile, and in 1781Pensacola in West Florida. These victories prevented the British fromattacking the United States from the southwest. In addition, Britain hadto keep thousands of troops fighting Gálvez—instead of fighting theAmericans. However, like France, Spain’s motives were not simply tohelp the United States. Gálvez’s victories helped extend Spain’s empirein North America.

By entering the war on America’s side, France and Spain forced theBritish to fight a number of enemies on land and sea. The British hadto spread their military resources over many fronts. For example, theywere afraid they might have to fight the French in the West Indies, sothey sent troops there. This prevented the British from concentratingtheir strength to defeat the inexperienced Americans.

Europeans Help WashingtonThe Americans gained some of the military experience they neededfrom Europe. Several European military officers came to Washington’said, including men from France, Poland, and the German states.

The Marquis de Lafayette (LAF•ee•EHT) was a 19-year-old Frenchnobleman who volunteered to serve in Washington’s army. He wanted amilitary career, and he believed in the American cause. He quicklygained Washington’s confidence and wasgiven the command of an army division.Lafayette won respect and love from hismen by sharing their hardships. Called “thesoldier’s friend,” he used his own money tobuy warm clothing for his ragged troops.Washington regarded him almost as a son.

Lafayette fought in many battles and alsopersuaded the French king to send a 6,000-man army to America. He became a hero inboth France and the United States. Laterhe took part in France’s own revolution.

Along with Lafayette came the Baron deKalb, a German officer who had served inthe French army. He became one ofWashington’s generals and earned a reputa-tion for bravery. In 1780, he received 11wounds in the Battle of Camden and died.

into a skilled fighting force. Washington asked him to train the army. In1778, Steuben began by forming a model company of 100 men. Then hetaught them how to move in lines and columns and how to handleweapons properly. Under Steuben’s direction, the soldiers practicedmaking charges with bayonets—long steel knives attached to the endsof guns. Within a month, the troops were executing drills with speedand precision. Once the model company succeeded, the rest of the armyadopted Steuben’s methods.

Winter at Valley ForgeHelp from Europeans came at a time when the Americans desperatelyneeded it. In late 1777, Britain’s General Howe forced Washington toretreat from Philadelphia. Beginning in the winter of 1777–1778, Wash-ington and his army camped at Valley Forge in southeast Pennsylvania.

On the march to Valley Forge, Washington’s army was so short onsupplies that many soldiers had only blankets to cover themselves. Theyalso lacked shoes. The barefoot men left tracks of blood on the frozenground as they marched. The soldiers’ condition did not improve atcamp. The Marquis de Lafayette described what he saw.

The unfortunate soldiers were in want of everything; they had neither coats,nor hats, nor shirts, nor shoes; their feet and their legs froze till they grewblack and it was often necessary to amputate them. . . . The Army frequentlypassed whole days without food.

Because of this, the name Valley Forge came to stand for thegreat hardships that Americans endured in the RevolutionaryWar. Over the winter, the soldiers at Valley Forge grew weakfrom not having enough food or warm clothing. Roughly aquarter of them died from malnutrition, exposure to the cold,or diseases such as smallpox and typhoid fever.

CAMP LIFE IN WINTERAt Valley Forge, soldiers slept insmall huts, 12 men to a hut. Theyslept in shifts so they could taketurns using the scarce blankets.The men also shared clothing. Ifone went on guard duty, theothers lent him their clothes andstayed by the fire in the hut untilhe came back. Guards had tostand in old hats to keeptheir shoeless feet warm.

The soldiers cooked onhot stones, in iron ket-tles, or on portable ironbraziers. Often the onlyfood they had was firecakes—a bread made offlour and water paste.

Washington appealed to Congress to send the soldiers supplies, but itwas slow in responding. Luckily, private citizens sometimes came to thesoldiers’ aid. According to one story, on New Year’s Day 1778, a groupof Philadelphia women drove ten teams of oxen into camp. The oxenwere pulling wagons loaded with supplies and 2,000 shirts. The womenhad the oxen killed to provide food for the men.

Despite the hardships, Washington and his soldiers showed amazingendurance. Under such circumstances, soldiers often desert, or leavemilitary duty without intending to return. Some soldiers did desert, butLieutenant Colonel John Brooks wrote that the army stayed togetherbecause of “Love of our Country.” The men also stayedbecause of Washington. Private Samuel Downing declaredthat the soldiers “loved him. They’d sell their lives for him.”

War on the FrontierElsewhere, other Americans also took on difficult challenges.In 1777, a 24-year-old frontiersman named George RogersClark walked into the office of Virginia’s governor, PatrickHenry. Clark said he had come to take part in defending theWestern frontier. He lived in Kentucky, which was claimed by Virginia.Clark wanted Virginia to defend that region against British soldiers andtheir Native American allies in what is now Indiana and Illinois. “If acountry is not worth protecting,” he said, “it is not worth claiming.”

Clark was difficult to ignore. Hestood six feet tall, had red hair, anddisplayed a dramatic personality. Hepersuaded Governor Henry that hewas right. The governor told Clark toraise an army to capture British postson the Western frontier.

In May of 1778, Clark and a groupof frontiersmen began to travel downthe Ohio River. He recruited otherson the way, until he had a force of 175to 200. They went by boat and lateron foot to Kaskaskia, a British poston the Mississippi River. They cap-tured Kaskaskia without a fight.

Then they moved east to take FortSackville at Vincennes, in present-day Indiana. Earlier, a small force sentby Clark had taken Vincennes, butBritish forces under Henry Hamiltonhad recaptured it. Settlers calledHamilton the “Hair Buyer” becausehe supposedly paid rewards for Amer-ican scalps.

Determined to retake Fort Sackville, Clark and his men set out forVincennes from Kaskaskia in February 1779. Hamilton wasn’t expectingan attack because the rivers were overflowing their banks and the woodswere flooded. Clark’s men slogged through miles of icy swamps andwaded through chest-deep water. They caught the British at Vincennesby surprise.

When Hamilton and his troops tried to remain in the fort, Clark pre-tended to have a larger force than he really had. He also found a way tofrighten the British into leaving. Clark and his men had captured severalNative Americans, who were allies of the British and had American scalpson their belts. Clark executed some of them in plain view of the fort. Hepromised to do the same to Hamilton and his men if they didn’t surren-der immediately. The British gave up.

Clark’s victory gave the Americans a hold on the vast region betweenthe Great Lakes and the Ohio River. This area was more than half thetotal size of the original 13 states. However, Fort Detroit on Lake Erieremained in the hands of the British.

War at SeaThe war expanded not only to the frontier but also tothe sea. By 1777, Britain had about 100 warships offthe American coast. This allowed Britain to control theAtlantic trade routes. There was no way the Americanscould defeat the powerful British navy.

But American privateers attacked British merchantships. A privateer is a privately owned ship that awartime government gives permission to attack anenemy’s merchant ships. After capturing a British mer-chant ship, the crew of a privateer sold its cargo andshared the money. As a result, a desire for profit as wellas patriotism motivated privateers. The states andCongress commissioned more than 1,000 privateers toprey on the British. During the war, they capturedhundreds of British ships. This disrupted trade, causingBritish merchants to call for the war to end.

Many men answered the privateers’ call for volunteers.Among them was 14-year-old James Forten, who wasthe son of a free African-American sail maker. In 1780,

Forten signed up to sail on the Royal Louis toearn money for his family after his father died.When a British ship captured the Royal Louis in1781, the British offered Forten a free trip to

England. Reportedly, Forten refused, saying he wouldnever betray his country. Released from a British prisonafter the war, Forten walked barefoot from New York tohis home in Philadelphia. He later became famous forhis efforts to end slavery.

A Naval HeroThough outnumbered, the Continental Navy scoredseveral victories against the British. An officer namedJohn Paul Jones won the most famous sea battle.

In 1779, Jones became the commander of a shipnamed Bonhomme Richard. With four other ships, hepatrolled the English coast. In September, Jones’s ves-sels approached a convoy in which two British warshipswere guarding a number of supply ships.

Jones closed in on the Serapis, the larger of the twowarships. At one point, the Bonhomme Richard rammedthe better-armed British vessel. As the two ships lockedtogether, the confident British captain demanded thatJones surrender. In words that have become a famous U.S.Navy slogan, Jones replied, “I have not yet begun to fight!”

The two warships were so close together that themuzzles of their guns almost touched. They blastedaway, each seriously damaging the other. On the shore,crowds of Britons gathered under a full moon to watchthe fighting. After a fierce three-and-a-half-hour battle,the main mast of the Serapis cracked and fell. The ship’scaptain then surrendered. The Bonhomme Richard was sofull of holes that it eventually sank, so Jones and his crewhad to sail away in the Serapis!

Jones’s success against the best navy in the worldangered the British and inspired the Americans. Evenso, the Americans knew that the war had to be won onland. The next section discusses the major land battlesin the closing years of the war.

Georgia cabin. Tradition says that the men had shot her last turkey and

ordered her to cook it for them. Raids like this

were common in the South, where feuding

neighbors used the war as an excuse to

fight each other. Both Patriots and Loyalists

took part in the raids.

As Hart prepared the food, she planned

her attack. When dinner was ready, the men

sat down to eat. Seizing one of their

muskets, Hart shot and killed one man and

wounded another. She aimed the gun at the

others as her daughter ran for help. A group

of Patriots arrived and hanged the Loyalists.

As Nancy Hart’s story demonstrates, the

fighting between Patriots and Loyalists in

the South was vicious. In this section, you will

learn why the British war effort shifted to the

South and why it failed.

Savannah and Charles TownThe British believed that most Southerners were Loyalists. Because ofthis, in 1778 the British decided to move the war to the South. Afterthree years of fighting in the North, the British were no closer to victory.Although they had captured Northern cities, they couldn’t control thecountryside because they did not have enough troops to occupy it. TheBritish believed that if they gained territory in the South, SouthernLoyalists would hold it for them.

The British also expected large numbers of Southern slaves to jointhem because they had promised to grant the slaves freedom. Althoughthousands of African Americans did run away to join the British, not allof them were set free. Instead, some British officers sold AfricanAmericans into slavery in the West Indies.

Seeking Loyalist support, the Britishinvaded the South—but ultimatelylost the war there.

For more than two centuries, theAmerican Revolution has inspiredother people to fight tyranny.

Britain’s West Indian colonies were a third reason the British invadedthe South. Southern seaports were closer to the West Indies, whereBritish troops were stationed. If the British captured Southern ports,they could move troops back and forth between the two regions.

In December 1778, the British captured the port of Savannah,Georgia. Using Savannah as a base, they then conquered most ofGeorgia. In 1780, a British army led by General Henry Clinton landedin South Carolina. They trapped American forces in Charles Town (nowCharleston), which was the largest Southern city. When the city’s 5,000defenders surrendered, the Americans lost almost their entire Southernarmy. It was the worst American defeat of the war.

The Swamp Fox and Guerrilla FightingAfter that loss, Congress assigned General Horatio Gates—the victor atSaratoga—to form a new Southern army. Continental soldiers led byBaron de Kalb formed the army’s core. Gates added about 2,000 newand untrained militia. He then headed for Camden, South Carolina, tochallenge the army led by the British general Lord Cornwallis.

On the way, a band of Patriots from South Carolina approached Gates.“Their number did not exceed 20 men and boys, some white, some black,and all mounted, but most of them miserably equipped,”wrote an officer. Their leader was Francis Marion, calledthe “Swamp Fox.” He provided Gates with helpfulknowledge of South Carolina’s coastal swamplands.Gates sent Marion to destroy boats on the Santee Riverbehind Camden. (See the map on page 209.) This wouldcut off British communications with Charles Town.

In August 1780, Gates’s army ran into British troopsoutside Camden. The Americans were in no conditionto fight. They were out of supplies and half-starved.Even worse, Gates put the inexperienced militia alongpart of the frontline instead of behind the veterans.When the British attacked, the militia panicked andran. Gates also fled, but Kalb remained with his sol-diers and received fatal wounds. This second defeat inthe South ended Gates’s term as head of an army andcaused American spirits to fall to a new low.

After Camden, a small British force set out forCharles Town with a column of American prisoners.Marion’s band overwhelmed the British and freed theprisoners. Fighting from a base in the swamps, Marion’smen cut the British supply line that led inland and northfrom Charles Town. Marion used the methods of aguerrilla. Guerrillas are small bands of fighters whoweaken the enemy with surprise raids and hit-and-runattacks. Both Patriots and Loyalists formed guerrillabands in the South. They carried out vicious raids.

BATTLE TACTICSA difference in battle tacticsaffected future warfare. Britishsoldiers marched shoulder toshoulder in three rows. Whenthey neared the enemy, the firstrow knelt, the second crouched,and the third remained standing.They all fired without aiming.

The Americans were bettershots. They often marched inrows, but sometimes they hid inwoods or behind walls to takeaim. Guerrillas attacked swiftly,then fled into the countryside.Those tactics succeeded and arestill used today. This photographshows modern U.S. soldierslearning guerrilla tactics.

Artillery of the RevolutionArtillery—large guns and cannon—played a key role in the AmericanRevolution. The ability of these guns to kill and destroy from a distancemade them essential in war. One witness of a battle described thedestruction: “Many men were badly injured and mortally wounded bythe fragments of bombs, . . . their arms and legs severed or themselvesstruck dead.” Most cannon used in the Revolution were made of castbronze. During the 1700s, artillery design did not change significantly.However, artillery became more mobile (more easily moved).

After each shot, a soldiersponged the inside of thebarrel. This put out sparksand cleaned away any dirtleft from the last shot.

Soldiers lit the cannon by applying a red-hot wire or a tube of burning powder to atouchhole drilled through the back of thebarrel, where the gunpowder lay. Thegunpowder exploded, forcing the projectileout of the open end of the barrel.

Cannon were classified by theweight of the iron ball they fired.American artillery ranged from 3-pounders to 32-pounders.

In the 1700s, most cannon wereaccurate at ranges of up to 1,000yards. That is the length of tenfootball fields laid end to end.

The Tide TurnsEven battles in the South sometimes turned vicious. One example wasthe Battle of Kings Mountain, fought on the border of North and SouthCarolina in October 1780. After surrounding a force of about 1,000Loyalist militia and British soldiers, the Americans slaughtered most ofthem. James P. Collins, a 16-year-old American, described the scene.

The dead lay in heaps on all sides, while the groans of the wounded wereheard in every direction. I could not help turning away from the scene beforeme with horror and, though exulting in victory, could not refrain fromshedding tears.

Many of the dead had been shot or hanged after they surrendered. TheAmericans killed them in revenge for Loyalist raids and an earlier inci-dent in which the British had butchered Americans. Kings Mountainwas one of Britain’s first losses in the South. It soon suffered more.

After Gates’s defeat at Camden, Washington put a new general,Nathanael Greene, in charge of the Southern army. Greene was one ofWashington’s most able officers. He had been a Quaker, but his churchhad cast him out because of his belief in the armed struggle against theBritish. Most Quakers are pacifist, or opposed to war.

Under Greene’s command, theAmerican army avoided full-scalebattles, in which the British had theedge because of superior firepower.So the American forces let the Britishchase them around the countrysideand wear themselves out. When theAmericans did fight, they did theirbest to make sure the British sufferedheavy losses.

As the fighting dragged on into itssixth year, opposition to the war grewin Britain. As a result, some Britishleaders began to think that Americanindependence would not be so bad.

The End of the WarIn 1781, most of the fighting tookplace in Virginia. In July of that year,the British general Cornwallis set uphis base at Yorktown, located on apeninsula in Chesapeake Bay. Fromthere, his army could receive suppliesby ship from New York.

Washington saw Cornwallis’s decision as a golden opportunity. InAugust 1781, a large French fleet arrived from the West Indies andblocked Chesapeake Bay. These ships prevented the British from receiv-ing supplies—and from escaping. They also allowed Washington tocome from the North and trap Cornwallis on the peninsula. Washingtonhad enough men to do this because a large French force led by GeneralJean Rochambeau had joined his army.

Washington and Rochambeau moved south. When British ships triedto reach Cornwallis, French ships drove them back. In the Battle ofYorktown, the American and French troops bombarded Yorktown withcannon fire, turning its buildings to rubble. Cornwallis had no way out.On October 19, 1781, he surrendered his force of about 8,000.

Although some fighting continued, Yorktown was the last major bat-tle of the war. When the British prime minister, Lord North, heard thenews, he gasped, “It is all over!” Indeed, he and other British leaderswere soon forced to resign. Britain’s new leaders began to negotiate apeace treaty, which is discussed in the next section.

Why the Americans WonIn November 1783, the last British ships and troops left New York City,and American troops marched in. As Washington said good-bye to hisofficers in a New York tavern, he hugged each one. Tears ran down hisface. He became so upset that he had to leave the room.

experienced and well-supplied professional soldiers. Yet the Americanshad certain advantages that enabled them to win.

1. Better leadership. British generals were overconfident and madepoor decisions. By contrast, Washington learned from his mistakes.After early defeats, he developed the strategy of dragging out thewar to wear down the British. Despite difficulties, he never gave up.

2. Foreign aid. Britain’s rivals, especially France, helped America.Foreign loans and military aid were essential to America’s victory.

3. Knowledge of the land. The Americans knew the land where thewar took place and used that knowledge well. The British could con-trol coastal cities but could not extend their control to the interior.

4. Motivation. The Americans had more reason to fight. At stake werenot only their lives but also their property and their dream of liberty.

The Treaty of ParisAs the winners, the Americans won favorable terms in the Treaty ofParis of 1783, which ended the Revolutionary War. The treaty includedthe following six conditions:

1. The United States was independent.2. Its boundaries would be the Mississippi River on the west, Canada

on the north, and Spanish Florida on the south.3. The United States would receive the right to fish off Canada’s

Atlantic Coast, near Newfoundland and Nova Scotia.4. Each side would repay debts it owed the other.5. The British would return any enslaved persons they had captured.6. Congress would recommend that the states return any property

they had seized from Loyalists.Neither Britain nor the United States fully lived up to the treaty’s

terms. Americans did not repay the prewar debts they owed British mer-chants or return Loyalist property. For their part, the British did not return

runaway slaves. They also refused togive up military outposts in the GreatLakes area, such as Fort Detroit.

Costs of the WarNo one knows exactly how many peopledied in the war, but eight years of fight-ing took a terrible toll. An estimated25,700 Americans died in the war, and1,400 remained missing. About 8,200Americans were wounded. Some wereleft with permanent disabilities, such asamputated limbs. The British sufferedabout 10,000 military deaths.

Many soldiers who survived the warleft the army with no money. They hadreceived little or no pay for their service.Instead of back pay, the governmentgave some soldiers certificates for land in the West. Many men sold thatland to get money for food and other basic needs.

Both the Congress and the states had borrowed money to finance theconflict. The war left the nation with a debt of about $27 million—adebt that would prove difficult to pay off.

The losers of the war also suffered. Thousands of Loyalists lost theirproperty. Between 60,000 and 100,000 Loyalists left the United Statesduring and after the war. Among them were several thousand AfricanAmericans and Native Americans, including Joseph Brant. Most of theLoyalists went to Canada. There they settled new towns and provinces.They also brought English traditions to areas that the French had settled.Even today, Canada has both French and English as official languages.

Issues After the WarThe American Revolution was not just a war, but a change in ideasabout government. Before the war, Americans had demanded theirrights as English citizens. But after declaring their independence, theyreplaced that goal with the idea of republicanism. This idea stated thatinstead of a king, the people would rule. The government would obtainits authority from the citizens and be responsible to them.

For this system to work, individuals would have to place the good ofthe country above their own interests. At first, only men were allowed totake part in governing by voting or holding public office—and not evenall men. However, women could help the nation by teaching their chil-dren the virtues that benefited public life. Such virtues included honesty,duty, and the willingness to make sacrifices.

As part of their liberty, Americans called for more religious freedom.Before the war, some laws discriminated against certain religions. Somestates had not allowed Jews or Catholics to hold public office. After the

Free EnterpriseOne cause of the Revolution was the colonists’ resentment ofBritish mercantilism. Parliament passed laws to discourage thecolonists from developing their own manufacturing and to forcethem to buy British goods. During the war, British economic con-trol weakened. British exports of woolens to the colonies droppedfrom £645,900 in 1774 to only £2,540 in 1776. As a result, thecolonists were able to make more economic choices—for example,they could choose to manufacture wool clothing.

The end of Britain’s mercantilist control allowed free enterpriseto begin to develop in the United States. In a free-enterprise sys-tem, business can be conducted freely based on the choices ofindividuals. The government does not control the system, but onlyprotects and regulates it.

war, states began to abolish those laws. They also ended the practice ofusing tax money to support churches.

Many people began to see a conflict between slavery and the ideal ofliberty. Vermont outlawed slavery, and Pennsylvania passed a law to freeslaves gradually. Individual African Americans also tried to end slavery.For example, Elizabeth Freeman sued for her freedom in a Massachusettscourt and won. Her victory in 1781 and other similar cases ended slaveryin that state. Freeman later described her desire for freedom.

With freedom, African Americans began to form their own insti-tutions. For example, the preacher Richard Allen helped start theFree African Society. That society encouraged African Americans tohelp each other. Allen also founded the African Methodist EpiscopalChurch, the first African-American church in the United States.

The American Revolution also influenced people in other countries.The Declaration of Independence was widely circulated in France, andhelped inspire the French Revolution in 1789. Revolutionaries in LatinAmerica began to rise up against colonial powers in the late 1700s andearly 1800s. By 1830, most of the former European colonies in Centraland South America had won independence.

Perhaps the main issue facing Americans after the war was how to shapetheir national government. American anger over British taxes, violation ofrights, and control of trade had caused the war. Now the United States neededa government that would protect citizens’ rights and economic freedom. InChapter 8, you will read how U.S. leaders worked to create such a government.
