CHAPTER IV
DATA ANALYSIS
This chapter presents data analysis to answer the problems mentioned in
chapter one. It is divided into two parts. The first part presents the findings related to
the analysis of adaptation technique used in translating the terms and the impact in
the translation quality. The second part is discussion; the findings in this research are
compared to the findings from the former researchers.
A. Research Findings
The first part of the research findings analyzes the kinds of term translated
using adaptation technique found in the Good and Bad children book series and its
translation. The second part presents data analysis of the translation quality
assessment towards the accuracy and acceptability.
1. Kinds of terms translated using adaptation technique
In general, adaptation technique can be described as a special kind of
equivalence to replace a source language (SL) cultural element with one from the
target culture in order to make it readable and acceptable for target reader. Total
numbers of terms translated using adaptation technique are 77 data. They are
classified into two kinds of terms namely; proper name and cultural terms. List of
terms translated using adaptation technique are given in appendix 1. Besides
33
describing the kinds of terms translated using adaptation technique, this part also
explains how they can be classified into those certain terms.
1.1 Proper name
There are 64 data considered as proper name. In analyzing the kind
of terms translated using adaptation technique, the theory of Asher is used
in this research. According to Asher (1994: 3372), proper names are
terms for denoting specific individuals or individual groups, with personal
names being the most typical. As stated in the chapter two, there are some
categorization of proper name based on Sinclair (1990:17-19), namely:
people name, relationship nouns, title, title used without names, title used
as count nouns, and other proper noun.
Not all the proper names are translated using adaptation technique
in Good and Bad children book series. Proper name which is translated
using adaptation technique usually has cultural values. They may refer to
setting, social status and nationality of characters and really demand
attention when rendered into a foreign language.

Example 1:
DATA NO. 009
ST “You don‟t have to be,” said Mr. Rose.
TT “Kamu tidak boleh begitu,” kata Pak Agung.
The example above is found in the 1stbook Good and bad: Jealous and
its translation .Mr. Rose is one of supporting characters as Jenny‟s teacher
in the story. He is a kind and wise man.
The name Mr. Rose has cultural values as an identity of foreign
people. The name of Rose is Latin origin and is used in more than one
countries and different languages of the world, especially English
speaking countries, French speaking countries among others. In English-
Indonesian Dictionary, the equivalent meaning of Rose is Mawar. The
translator tries to replace the name Mr. Rose into Pak Agung in order to
make it familiar for children. The translator did not translate literary into
Mawar due to gender specific name. In Indonesian culture, Mawar refers
to the name of female person.
The name Mr. Rose and Pak Agung includes into proper names
since it is used as a title for person. Particularly, it can be categorized as
38
people name. Mr. Rose is a fictitious person name created by the author
of the book and related to particular living person in the real world.
In the source text (ST) and target (text), it can be seen that proper
name of personal names is translated into personal name using
substitution procedure. The names Mr. Rose and Pak Agung are not
related to each other in terms of form and semantic significance.
Therefore, the translation makes children understand the character name
more easily.
Example 2:
DATA NO. 013
ST
Kate and Lindsey were standing nearby. “Let‟s do something,”
said Lindsey. “I‟m bored.”
TT
Katrin dan Linda berdiri di dekatnya. “Kita mau ngapain sih,”
kata Linda. “Aku bosan disini.”
The example 2 is taken from 3rd
book Good and bad: Bully and its
translation. Kate and Lindsey are the characters in that story. They are
naughty girls. The names Kate and Lindsey have cultural values. They
become Scottish and American people name. Kate and Lindsey are hard
39
to pronounce by children, so the translator tries to translate the names into
Katrin and Linda.
Kate and Lindsey include to proper name since it is used as
someone‟s name. In the source text (ST) and target (text), it can be seen
that proper name of personal names is translated into personal name using
phonological replacement procedure. The proper name of Kate is
translated into Katrin and Lindsey is translated into Linda in the target
text. It shows that names were replaced with names that have a similar
orthography and phonology.
Example 3:
DATA NO. 087
ST The Helter Skelter looked fun too.
TT Rollercoaster sepertinya juga menyenangkan.
The example above is found in the 14th
book Good and bad: Angry
and its translation. Based on www.wikipedia.org, the definition of Helter
Skelter can be seen below:
Helter Skelter is an amusement ride with a slide built in a spiral
around a high tower. Users climb up inside the tower and slide
down the outside, usually on a mat or hessian (burlap) sack.
Typically the ride will be of wooden construction. In the case of
40
fairground versions is designed to be disassembled to facilitate
transportation between sites. The term is primarily (but not
exclusively) found in the United Kingdom. In the United States, the
ride is uncommon and may be called by other names, such as a
Skylide.
From the definition above, it is clear that Helter Skelter does not
exist in Indonesia. The translator translated Helter Skelter into
Rollercoaster by adaptation technique using similar terms refers to an
amusement ride. In Indonesia, Rollercoaster can be found in some
modern theme parks such as Dunia Fantasi Ancol in Jakarta and Trans
Studio Bandung in Bandung.
The terms Helter Skelter and Rollercoaster considered as proper
name since it is used as a title of thing. To be more specific, those terms
are categorized as other proper nouns or item names. It can be seen
below:
Picture 4.2. Rollercoaster Picture 4.1. Helter
Skelter
41
In the source text (ST) and target (text), it can be seen that proper
names of proper nouns are translated into proper nouns using recreation
procedure. Recreation procedure‟s purpose is recreating an invented
name in the ST into the TT to reproduce similar effects of this newly-
created referent in another target cultural setting. The term Helter Skelter
has no lexical meaning in Indonesian language; the translator may
translate it into Rollercoaster which is more familiar in the target reader‟s
culture.
1.2 Cultural terms
The definitions of adaptation technique from Molina and Albir, and
Newmark show that adaptation technique often occurs in cultural terms.
Based on Newmark, culture can be defined as the characteristics and
knowledge of a particular group of people, defined by everything from
language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts. Newmark
(1988:95-102) divides cultural terms into several categories. It is
classified as ecology, material culture (artifacts), social culture (work and
leisure), organizations, customs, activities, procedures, concepts, and
gestures and habits.
From 15 books that were analyzed in this research, not all of the
cultural terms are translated using adaptation technique. There are 13 data
cultural terms translated using adaptation techniques found.

Example 1:
DATA NO. 024
ST “Let‟ invite them both to tea,” said Li‟s mum.
TT “Ajak mereka berdua untuk main kesini.” Kata Ibu Leo.
The example above is found in the 3rd
book Good and bad: Bully
and its translation. Li‟s Mum asks Li to invite his friends to have dinner at
their house. She suggests them to arrange a plain order to stop Martin
bullying them.
In British culture, tea has some meanings; a beverage, a time of a
day, a meal and supper. While in Indonesian, the equivalent of the word
tea is Teh (it is a beverage). The translator translates to tea into untuk main
kesini, because the word untuk main kesini is the closest term in the target
text according to the context of situation.
Tea is considered as a cultural term since some countries have
different definition of tea. Tea is defined by how tea is made and
consumed, by how people interact with tea and by the aesthetics
surrounding of tea drinking/It including aspects of tea production,
tea brewing, tea arts and ceremony, society, history, health, ethics,
education, communication, and media issues. For example: tea is
commonly consumed at social events, and many cultures have
created intricate formal ceremonies for these events. Afternoon tea
and tea parties are western example of these. Tea ceremonies, with
their roots in the Chinese tea culture, differ among Japanese or
45
Korean tea ceremony. However, tea may differ in preparation, such
as in Tibet, where the beverage is commonly brewed with salt and
butter.(http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/tea_culture)
Based on Newmark‟s categorization of cultural terms, tea on the
example 1 includes in activities category due to the context of situation.
Tea on the datum above has a meaning as a verb.
Example 2:
DATA NO. 030
ST Laura smiled. “Look at the newts and frogspawn!” said Laura
TT Lala tersenyum kepada mereka. “Lihatlah ikan dan telur katak
itu!” kata Lala sambil menunjuk ke danau.
The example above is found in the 4th
book Good and bad: Fair and
its translation. Newt can be defined as an amphibian of Salamandridae‟s
family, although not all aquatic salamanders are considered as newt.
Based on Oxford Dictionaries, the meaning of Newt is:
A small slender-bodied amphibian with lungs and well-developed
tail, typically spending its adult life on land and returning to water
to breed.
46
It can be seen that the translator translates the word newts into ikan (fish)
in order to make it understandable for children. The word ikan is chosen
because it is animal which can easily be found in a pond.
Newt is considered as cultural term since this animal is only found
across Europe, North America, Asia and Japan. In other word, newt does
not exist in every country depending on the geographical location and
ecological features. Thus, it is categorized as ecology in Newmark‟s
category. This animal can be seen below:

Example 3:
DATA NO. 062
ST Greg and Gemma shared a can of cold baked beans.
TT Beni and Beti lalu makan mi mentah.
The example above is found in the 6th
book Good and bad: Happy
and its translation. The context of situation is when Greg and Gemma
went camping with their family. When they pitched the tent, Greg thought
his dad looked fed up, so he asked them to eat cold baked beans. Based
on Merriam Webster Dictionary, the definition of baked beans is “beans
that have been boiled and then baked usually in sweet brown sauce”.
They may be eaten hot or cold straight from the can as they are fully
cooked.
The term cold baked bean has no equivalent terms in the target text.
It is translated into mi mentah by the translator. Therefore, the translator
tries to replace the word baked beans into mi because Indonesian people
commonly eat mi (noodles) when camping, and the word mentah (raw)
due to how they eat the food without heating.
48
Baked beans are a dish in some western countries. In some
countries, they may be served in particular way. In modern English
breakfast, it is often eaten on toast with a tomato and sugar sauce. While,
In American baked beans use a sauce prepared with molasses and salt
pork. In short, baked beans is a cultural terms which is categorized in
material culture as a kind of food. Baked bean can be seen below:
Example 4:
DATA NO. 080
ST
“What shall we do first?” asked Aunty Jo from the back seat.
“How about finding a café?”
TT
“Apa yang akan kita lakukan lebih dulu?” Tanya Bibi Jeni dari
Jok belakang. “Bagaimana kalau kita mencari kedai
minuman?”
Picture 4.4 Baked beans
49
The example above is found in the 8th
book Good and bad: Selfish
and its translation. The word café is informing the place where the
character wants to go. Based on Oxford Dictionaries, café is a small
restaurant selling light meals and drinks. Meanwhile, kedai is “bangunan
tempat berjualan (makanan dan sebagainya); warung” (kbbi.web.id). That
definition has a same idea referring to place selling meals and drinks.
The word café has equivalent word in the target text i.e kafe. The
translator tries to render the word café in order to get similar cultural
message in target language, especially where the term can be found. In
Indonesia, kafe can be found in modern place such as in a mall. They
give a tax for their menu and perform some live music. While, kedai
tends to be traditional, they can be found along the road side. Kedai is
suitable word due to the context of situation when the character‟s of the
story tries to find a place to drink in a road side.
Based on Oxford Dictionaries, Café has different definition in some
countries. North Americans define café as a bar or nightclub and South
Africans define café as a shop selling sweets, cigarettes, newspaper which
is staying open after normal hours. Café and kedai include into cultural
terms since it has their own characteristic in each country.

2. The Analysis of Translation Quality
The translation quality is analyzed in terms of accuracy and acceptability. The
accuracy is measured by analyzing the score of questionnaires given to the raters. The
three raters are coded as R1, R2, and R3. Furthermore, the acceptability is measured
by observing and interviewing the participants after reading the children book series
Good and Bad”. The participants are coded as P1, P2, and P3. The analysis of each
category is presented as follows:
2.1 Accuracy
The data are classified into three categories; they are accurate
translation, less accurate translation and inaccurate translation based on
the scale stated in the chapter three. Each classification will be explained
in detail in the following part.
a) Accurate translation
The data are considered as accurate translation when the whole
massage of terms translated using adaptation technique in source text
is transferred accurately in the target text. The message in the source
text is conveyed correctly and has the same message in the target text.
There are 13 data considered as accurate translation found in the
children book series Good and Bad and its translation. The following
are the examples of the accurate translation:
51
Example 1:
DATA NO. 07
ST “Hurry Up,” said Zahid. “I‟ve lost my watch,” said David
TT “Ayo cepat,” Wahid. “Jam tanganku hilang,” kata David
The example above is found in the 2nd
book Good and bad:
Friendly and its translation. The proper names Zahid is translated into
Wahid using adaptation technique. Based on behindthename.com, the
name meaning of Zahid is “pious, devout” and it is derived from
Arabic word. While, based on carinamabayi.com, Wahid means
“hamba Allah yang Esa”. Both definitions refer to the same meaning,
so the translation is considered accurate.
b) Less accurate translation
The data are considered less accurate when the whole messages
of the source text are not totally conveyed in the target text. There are
some messages of source language might be lost or translated
differently in target language by the translator since the addition and
reduction exist after they are translated into target text. This
classification covers 31 data of the entire data in the children book
52
series Good and Bad and its translation. The following are the
examples of the less accurate translation:
Example 1:
DATA NO. 071
ST
Barney says, "May I eat my sandwich now...please?"
Baby Bop says, "Yes, you may."
TT
“Bolehkah aku makan roti lapisku sekarang?” Tanya Barney
meminta izin. “Tentu saja, Barney.” Sahut Baby Pop.
The example above is found in the 11th
book Barney: Please
and Thank You and its translation. Sandwich is well-known in the
source language culture. While in target language, there is no
equivalent word of Sandwich. Based on Merriam Webster
Dictionaries, the meaning of sandwich is “two pieces of bread with
something (such as meat, peanut butter, etc) between them” or “two
or more cookies, crackers, or slices of cake with something between
them”. While, In Indonesia, Roti lapis is a sponge cake or bread of
two or more layers.
53
By comparing the translation and the definition of Sandwich
above, there are some lack information on the translation such as the
filling between the breads and what kind of bread used. Thereby, the
translation is considered less-accurate because Roti lapis cannot
represent the whole meaning of sandwich.
Example 2:
DATA NO. 027
ST At teatime, Calvin couldn‟t stop grinning.
TT
Pada waktu makan malam, Alvin tidak dapat menyembunyikan
kegembiraanya.
The example above is found in the 5th
book Good and bad:
Lonely and its translation. Calvin feels so bored in his house. In the
afternoon, his dad takes him to join some clubs. The clubs are gym
club, swimming club, drama group and choir. After arrived in his
house, he told her family about his activity this afternoon.
The translator translates Teatime into makan malam in the
target text. This translation is considered less-accurate because the
phrase makan malam cannot represent the whole meaning of teatime.
Based on Merriam Webster Dictionaries, the meaning of teatime is
54
“the usual time for the afternoon meal known as tea; late afternoon or
early evening”. Meanwhile, makan malam is equivalent with dinner in
the source text. Based on Oxford Dictionaries, dinner is “the main
meal of the day, taken either around midday or in the evening. Those
definitions tell about the evening meal, but they are different in the
kind of meal which is served; Teatime serves tea as the meal, while
dinner not only serve tea but also the other main dish like chicken rice,
steak, pasta and etc.
Example 3:
DATA NO. 059
ST
Danny‟s mum gave Josh a hug. Then she helped him on to a
Roundabout
TT
Ibu Dani memeluk Joshua. Kemudian, ia mengajak Joshua naik
Komidi Putar..
The example above is found in the 8th
book Good and bad:
Selfish and its translation. This translation is categorized less accurate
because both definition between the source text and target text refers
to spinning amusement ride for children in a fairground. Based on
55
Oxford Dictionaries, the definition of Roundabout is a large revolving
device in a playground, for children to ride on or a merry go round.
While, based on kbbi.web.id, “Komidi putar adalah kuda-kudaan
yang dapat bergerak mengikuti gerakan roda besar yang berputar
pada sumbunya ”. The differentiation between Roundabout and
Komidi Putar can be seen bellow:
c) Inaccurate translation
There are 34 data classified into inaccurate translation. The
translation considered inaccurate if the source language is deleted or
the function and the message containing in it is changed or different.
Besides, this inaccurate classification is the biggest percentage of all.
Picture 4.5 Roundabout Picture 4.6 Komidi Putar
56
Example 1:
DATA NO. 030
ST Laura smiled. “Look at the newts and frogspawn!” said Laura
TT
Lala tersenyum kepada mereka. “Lihatlah ikan dan telur katak
itu!” kata Lala sambil menunjuk kedanau.
The example above is found in the 4th
book Good and bad:
Fair and its translation. The word Newt in source text is not fully-
translated into target text. Actually, the word Newt is equivalent to
Kadal air in the target text. Based on Oxford Dictionaries, the meaning
of Newt is “A small slender-bodied amphibian with lungs and well-
developed tail, typically spending its adult life on land and returning to
water to breed”. While, Ikan is “binatang bertulang belakang yang
hidup dalam air, berdarah dingin, umumnya bernapas dengan insang,
biasanya tubuhnya bersisik, bergerak dan menjaga keseimbangan
badannya dengan menggunakan sirip” (kbbi.web.id). Those animals
can be seen below:
57
From the explanation above, Newt is different from Ikan (Fish)
although they live in water. The meaning of Newt is not accurately
conveyed into the target text. It indicates that the translation is
inaccurate.
Example 2:
DATA NO. 009
ST “Dr Stone will see you now,” she said to Linda.
TT
“Ayo, Linda. Dokter Budi akan memeriksamu sekarang,”
katanya kepada Linda.
Picture 4.7. Newt Picture 4.8 Ikan (Fish)
58
The example above is found in the 12th
book Good and bad:
Brave and its translation. Dr Stone is one of supporting characters as
Linda‟s doctor in the story. He is a kind and wise man.
The proper name Dr Stone in source text is translated into
Dokter Budi in target text. Both proper names have cultural values.
Stone is a masculine name as an identity of foreign people. “Stone \s-
to-ne\ is a variant of Stoney (English), and the meaning of Stone is
“stone” (babynamewizard.com). While, the proper name Budi is male
name as an identity of Indonesian people, especially Javanese people.
Based on carinamabayi.com, it means kind and mind.
The proper name Stone is equivalent to Batu in target text. In
Indonesian language, Batu refers to the name of building material.
However, the translator does not translate it literary into Batu due
items names. The translation is considered as inaccurate translation
because the proper name Dr Stone is not fully-translated into target
text and the translator does not try to use the same alliteration in
translating the name.
59
Example 3:
DATA NO. 062
ST “Look at my space buggy!” said Ian.
TT “Lihat pesawat ruang angkasaku!” seru Rian.
The example above is found in the 9th
book Good and bad:
Angry and its translation. In his room, Ian fixes the last pieces of Lego
and shows it to his brother. He makes a space buggy.
Space buggy also called as moon buggy. Based on Collins
Dictionaries, moon buggy is a vehicle used by astronauts for surface
exploration on the Moon. While, in the example above, the word
space buggy is translated into pesawat ruang angkasa in the target
text. Pesawat ruang angkasa is equivalent with spaceship in the
source text. They are can be seen below:
60
Picture4.9 Space Buggy Picture 4.10 Spaceship
By comparing those definitions, the message of the word is not
accurately conveyed into the target text. It indicates that the
translation is inaccurate translation.
Example 4:
DATA NO. 020
ST Kerry‟s head was full of castles and Disneyland.
TT Pikiran Karin penuh dengan kastil dan Danau Toba.
The example above is taken from 4th
book Good and bad: Liar
and its translation. Disneyland is a modern theme park built in
California, Hongkong, Japan, and France. Disneyland is translated
into Danau Toba (a famous lake in Indonesia). The translator has
made a wrong decision in choosing the proper name of Danau Toba
to replace the proper name of Disneyland. The translator may replace
61
into Danau Toba due to the popularity of the place when the book
was published. Some years ago, Danau Toba is more familiar than
Disneyland. They chose the proper name of Danau Toba in order to
get children understanding about the kind of recreation place.
Actually, it will be more accurate if the translator adapts Disneyland
into Dunia Fantasi Ancol (modern theme park in Indonesia) due to
children understanding at that time.
2.2 Acceptability
The acceptability is measured based on the scale stated in the chapter
three. It is classified into; acceptable translations, less acceptable
translations and unacceptable translation. There is one classification
found in the source text. It will be explained in detail in the following
part.
a) Acceptable translation
All of the entire data is classified into acceptable translation. It is
acceptable if the translation of the terms translated using adaptation
technique sounds natural for the target readers and feels like the
original composition in the target language; it is grammatically correct
in the target language and the dictions used are suitable for the target
culture. This category is the biggest percentage of all. Below are the
examples of acceptable translation:
62
Example 1:
DATA NO 021
ST
They heard Mrs Crocker their teacher calling. “Time to get up!
Breakfast!”
TT
Mereka mendengar Bu Dian, guru pembimbing mereka berseru,
“Ayo bangun, Anak-anak! Cepat mandi lalu sarapan pagi!”
The example above is taken from 4th
book Good and bad: Fair
and its translation. The context situation is when Laura and her
classmate went camping with her teacher. Her teacher asked him to
get up and breakfast before doing the camp activity.
This translation is considered acceptable because the
translation is appropriate with the target text language‟s principles.
The translation is grammatically correct in the target language and the
dictions used are suitable for the target culture. It can be found in the
word mandi added by the translator. The translator has made good
decision in choosing the word mandi (take a bath) due to the
Indonesian cultural concept. One of Indonesian‟s life style is people
generally wake up early morning and they will take a bath before
getting their breakfast.
63
Besides, the translation is also sounds natural for children.
Children are able to understand the whole sentence easily. The
participants could retell the idea of the whole sentences fluently
without any difficulties.
Example 2:
DATA NO. 047
ST Ruth could smell lunch cooking.
TT Ratih mencium bau sedap masakan ibunya.
The example above is taken from 7th
book Good and bad: Liar
and its translation. The proper name Ruth is one of figures in bible. This
name also used by foreign people from English, German, Dutch,
Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Spanish. The translator translates the
proper name Ruth into Ratih in target text. The translation is acceptable
because the proper name Ratih is familiar and commonly used in
Indonesian culture, especially Javanese people. Then, children are able
to understand the whole sentences without any difficulties. They are
able to mention the characters of the story; who are they, and their
gender.
64
Example 3:
DATA NO. 60
ST He kicked at an empty crisps packet.
TT Ia menendang bekas bungkus biscuit.
The example above taken from the 8th
book Good and bad:
Selfish and its translation. The word crips is translated into biscuit in
the target text. The translation belongs to acceptable translation because
the word is commonly used in Indonesian culture althought it is
originally derived from English language. The right spelling of biscuit in
Indonesian language is biskuit.
Another reason which makes this translation belongs to acceptable
is children could retell the idea of the word. Children are familiar with
the word biscuit. They usually knew the word from snack‟s
advertisement in the television.
65
Example 4:
DATA NO. 12
ST
Kate and Lindsey were standing nearby. “Let‟s do something,”
said Lindsey. “I‟m bored.”
TT
Katrin dan Linda berdiri di dekatnya. “Kita mau ngapain sih,”
kata Linda. “Aku bosan disini.”
The example above is taken from the 3th
book Good and bad:
Bully and its translation. The proper names Kate is translated into Katrin
in the target text. According to carinamabayi.com, Katrin is originally
derived from Poland‟s language. Nowadays, this proper name is
commonly used in Indonesian culture. This datum is categorized as
acceptable translation because children could understand the proper
names easily. They know that proper name Katrin is used as female
name of the story characters.
66
Example 5:
DATA NO. 087
ST The Helter Skelter looked fun too.
TT Rollercoaster sepertinya juga menyenangkan.
The example above is found in the 14th
book Good and bad:
Angry and its translation. Rollercoaster is derived from English
language. According to Oxford Dictionaries, the meaning of
Rollercoaster is “anything characterized by abrupt and extreme changes
(especially up and down)” or “elevated railway in an amusement park
(usually with sharp curves and steep inclines)”. Children can understand
the idea of the word clearly without any difficulties although the
translation uses foreign language. They are familiar with the word. They
knew the terms from the television and books.
67
B. Discussion
In this part of this sub-chapter, the findings of the research are revealed
dealing with the kind of terms translated using adaptation technique and the value of
translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability in children book series Good and
Bad.
1. The kind of terms translated using adaptation technique
The result of data analysis shows that there are two kinds of terms
translated using adaptation technique found in children book series Good
and Bad. They are proper names and cultural terms (see on appendix).
Based on the data of research, the most frequently-used terms translated
using adaptation technique is proper name with the calculation of 64 data
(82,05%). Cultural terms are the second terms translated using adaptation
technique with 13 data (17,94%).
Not all the proper names are translated using adaptation technique
in Good and Bad children book series. Proper name which is translated
using adaptation technique usually has cultural values. They may refer to
setting, social status and nationality of characters and really demand
attention when rendered into foreign language. For example: datum 6
(Rose), datum 10 (Mr. Hick), datum 13 (Lindsey), datum 14 (Miss Rice),
datum 20 (Mrs. Crocker), datum 37 (Greg), datum 54 (Charlene), and
datum 78 (Dr. Stone) are proper name which has cultural values. Those
68
proper name does not exist in Indonesian culture. They may cause some
problems if does not translated into the target culture language. Children
with their imperfect reading abilities and limited experience of life will be
hard to read, pronounce or understand the story‟s characters. Proper name
which is found in Good and Bad children book series is divided into four
sub types of proper name. It is classified into female name, male name,
place name and item name. There are 33 (51,5%) data of female names,
24 (37.5%) data of male names, 2 (3.1%) data of place names and 5
(7,8%) data of item names.
Newmark (1988b:81) states that “adaptation is a freest techniques
form of translation, and used mainly for plays (comedies) and poetry; the
themes, characters, plots are usually preserved, the SL culture is
converted to the TL culture and the text is rewritten”. It is clear that
adaptation technique often occurs in cultural elements. Cultural terms
found in Good and Bad children book series are classified into 2 (15,3%)
ecology, 7 (53,8%) material culture, 3 (23,07%) activities, and 1 (7,6%)
concept.
2. The impacts of translation technique
Adaptation technique‟s purpose is to make the translation more
familiar and acceptable by children, so that children who lack of
knowledge and experience are easy to understand the text. Adaptation
69
techniques used by the translator give influence to the quality of
translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability (see on appendix).
2.1 The impacts of adaptation technique on the accuracy level
From the data which have been analyzed, the accuracy of terms
translated using adaptation technique reaches the lowest number.
The accurate translation reaches 13 of 77 data (16,88%).
Meanwhile, the less accurate translation reaches 30 of 77 data
(38,46%) and the inaccurate translation reaches 34 of 77 data
(43,58%).
The translations are mostly inaccurate. It occurs in translating
proper name of personal names. The reason is shown on the datum
6, datum 48, datum 65.The translator translates Mr Rose into Pak
Agung, Jess into Siska, Paul into Agus using adaptation technique
without any consideration. In order to get the high level of
accuracy the translator has to master translating proper name and
has experienced in translating proper name. They can translate the
proper name using adaptation technique by modifying the
phonological/ graphological system in the target text, so it will
increase the level of accuracy. It can be seen on the datum 25
(Calvin translated into Alvin), datum 28 (Tracy translated into
Tanti), and datum 35 (translated into Lusi) which is more accurate.
70
Those strategies can be used if the translator cannot find the
equivalent proper name in Indonesian culture.
Children‟s books do not only provide entertainment but also
help develop children‟s reading skill. It leads to the same
adherence to the original, but sometimes translators refer to their
own knowledge of the target culture, experiences, ideas, norms
and values. In order to maintain the function of the original work,
the translator has to recognize the meaning of proper names and
cultural terms. Change of foreign names and cultural terms which
belong to the target language will not further the readers‟
knowledge of and interest in foreign culture. Translators incline to
preserve foreign names in order to bridging children into contact
with other culture.
2.2 The impacts of adaptation technique on the acceptability level
An accurate translation does not guarantee that it is acceptable,
readable and vice versa. All the data are acceptable in target text.
The data belongs to acceptable data because of the application of
adaptation technique. Adaptation technique has a function to
convert the source language culture into the target language
culture. It is same with the idea of acceptability.
The translations are acceptable because naturally transferred
into target language culture and grammatical structure, the diction
71
is fit to the context, and the translation delivers appropriate
cultural values of target language. For example: datum 21 (Time to
get up! Breakfast! is translated into Ayo bangun, Anak-anak!
Cepat mandi lalu sarapan pagi! Banyak yang harus kita kerjakan
hari ini), datum 27 (teatime translated into makan malam), and
datum 39 (cold baked beans translated into mi mentah). Besides,
the writing rules of proper names are start with capital letter either
in the beginning or in the middle of the sentence; the terms used in
target text are commonly-used in target text. The examples are:
datum 26 (Ashley translated into Anita), datum 20 (Mrs Crocker
translated into Bu Dian), datum 57 (Teacups translated into
Cangkir Putar).
Besides, all of the proper names and cultural terms can be
understood by target reader; it means that children can retell all
the idea of the proper names and cultural terms fluently without
any difficulties although some proper names and cultural terms are
derived from foreign language. It can be seen on the datum 56
(rollercoaster) and datum 60 (biscuit). There is no problem for
children to understand those translations because most of them are
familiar with the word. They knew the terms from the television
and books.
72
CHAPTER V
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
A. Conclusion
This part is the conclusion of the analysis based on problem statements which
have been stated and explained in chapter 1. The conclusions are as follows:
1. In this research, the total number of terms translated using adaptation
technique in children book series Good and Bad are 77 data. They are
classified into two kinds of terms namely; proper name and cultural terms.
The most frequently-used terms translated using adaptation technique is
proper name with the calculation of 64 data (82,05%). Cultural terms are
the second most frequently-used terms translated using adaptation
technique with 13 data (17,94%).
The 64 data of proper names are classified into 4 classifications. They are
female name (33 data or 51,5%), male name (24 data or 37,5%), place
name (2 data or 3,1%) and item name (5 data or 7,8%). The 13 data of
cultural terms are classified into 4 classifications. They are Ecology (2
data or 15,3%), material culture (7 data or 53,8%), activities (3 data or
23,07%) and concept (1 data or 7,6%).
2. The analysis on translation quality of adaptation technique in children
book series Good and Bad are classified into accurate and acceptable.
73
There are 3 levels for each aspect of translation quality. In the aspect of
accuracy; 14 data (17,94%) are accurate, 30 data (38,46%) are less
accurate, and 34 data (43,58%) are inaccurate. Meanwhile, in the aspect of
acceptability, all the data are acceptable in target text.
B. Suggestion
From the research findings and discussion in the previous chapter, there are
some suggestions to translators, students and other researchers in translating text
using adaptation technique:
1. Translator
The result of this research shows that adaptation technique often occurs in
translating proper names and cultural terms. Meanwhile for the translation
quality, adaptation also contributes in making good acceptability. The risk
of applying adaptation technique is inaccurate translation. It shows with
the high number of inaccurate translation. In translating using adaptation
technique, it is better for the translator to know about the context of
situation. The translator must translate the text not too far from the context
to reduce the inaccurate translation. It is expected that translator will be
able to use adaptation technique correctly in translation process in order to
have better quality translation, especially in accuracy aspect.
74
2. Student of English Department
This research is expected to improve the student‟s understanding about
adaptation technique. It is also expected to give students understanding
about the impact of adaptation technique on translation quality.
This research is to help students improve their study on Molina and
Albir‟s theory especially the adaptation technique.
3. Other researchers
This research is expected to be able to provide any information in the field
of translation, especially when they want to analyze other translation
techniques in children story book. The pattern in applying adaptation
technique will also be helpful for other researchers to find out how the
adaptation technique is applied in this children story book.
The other researchers are suggested that to conduct a research related to
the special technique stated by Molina and Albir towards the translation
quality of children story book.

KUESIONER PENGUKURAN KUALITAS TERJEMAHAN
PENGGUNAAN TEKNIK ADAPTASI PADA BUKU SERI CERITA ANAK GOOD AND BAD
Herdian Rosa Kartika Buana (C0311020)
Buku seri cerita anak Good and Bad diterjemahkan
