in a disciplined way and exercise the habits of punctuality, sincerity, devotion, hard work,

integrity and honesty and concern for the people, society and the nation. NIT Patna education system envisages achieving the above mentioned qualities by undertaking an

integrated and balanced blend of curricular co curricular and extra curricular activities

amongst students’ teachers and supporting staff and by creating a congenial and close

relation among students and teachers, a student and students and teacher and teachers. In

order to achieve this objective the supporting staffs also plays a vital role. They are

supportive in real sense, dedicated and effective.

Curricular activities for students are designed through adoption of appropriate teaching

learning process, course contents of various subjects, monitoring of theory and laboratory

classes and by taking initiative in projects in various subjects. Initiative starts from the

students end and teachers and supporting staffs are at the supervisory and helping role.

Undergraduate courses are completed in four years duration; post graduate courses in two

years duration and Ph.D. level courses in three to five years duration.

Co-curricular activities for students concentrate on debates, quizzes, vocational training,

visit to works and industrial visits. The teachers do the co curricular activities in the form of

their participation in students’ activities as well as by taking part in summer schools,

sponsored projects and industrial consultancy. Supporting staff participates in the co

curricular activities by undertaking a series of routine testing works for the benefit of

industries, state government organisation, consultants and trade and commerce.

Extra curricular activities are planned through games and sports, cultural programmes and

NSS activities. Cultural activities provide them a platform to know about the culture of

various states and regions of the country and give an opportunity for national integration. It

maybe mentioned here that admission rules for students and recruitment rules for teachers and supporting staff are such that the people from all states of the country are inducted in

NIT family and as such there are chances of intermixing of people on national basis. Here it

may be mentioned that there is good proportion of girls’ students, female teachers and

female supporting staff. Their presence in all the activities gives a colourful atmosphere

with decorum and decency. This inculcates a healthy reciprocal respect for either sex.

Usually five days in a week is devoted to curricular activities whereas the remaining two

days are devoted for co curricular and extra curricular activities.

A good library with e-library facility, workshop with facilities for catering the needs of

students’ projects as well as sponsored project and research serves as the backbone of

academic activities. The availability of computers and broadband internet facility provide

added advantages to a true learner. The location of the institute is on the southern bank of holy river Ganges. The panoramic natural scenario of river Ganges is much helpful for

getting relaxation to the whole community of the institute while on work as well as during

leisure periods. The pollution free and eye catching scenario of the campus provides a

healthy inputs amidst a very busy, tough and laborious academic and Para academic

activities of each and every individual.

Therefore, NIT Patna educational system attempts an overall development of its students,

teachers, supporting staff, neighbouring people, society and the nation.

1.4 New Initiatives:

Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India took over the erstwhile

Bihar College of Engineering Patna on 28.1.04 and rechristened it as National Institute of

Technology Patna. The immediate initiative was taken in the session 2004-05 to transform the system of administration and management of the Institute. Some of the drawbacks and

the problems of the old system were identified and actions were taken to improve the

system and bring it on a new track. Some of the new initiatives that were taken during this

session were as follows:

i. New Academic System:

After obtaining autonomous status vide NIT Act, 2007, NIT Patna introduced semester system of examination for all the branches and it has been functioning quite effectively. We

could manage to publish result in time. Implementation of regular class test, assignment,

tutorials etc has aroused deep interest towards learning among students.

ii. Creation of Website of NIT Patna:

NIT Patna website is operational from October 2004 and is available at www.nitp.ac.in. The website is easily available on all major search engines like Google, Yahoo etc. The website

home page is nicely designed and it contains information about the institute along with the

photo of the main building. The home page contains link for all departments and sections

like Academics, Library, Placement, Tender, Alumni etc and so it is quite user friendly .The

institute is using the website for tender and other advertisements, result publication, hostel

allotment, events etc .The website has enabled NIT Patna in creating transparency for its activities. E-mail facility is provided to Director, Registrar and various departments of the

college in NIT Patna domain. All major activities of NIT Patna are visible to the world

through our website.

iii. New Library building constructed:

Prior to creation of NIT Patna, Bihar College of Engineering and Patna University had started the construction of new central library building in its campus with the help of some

UGC grants. The construction was held up after making the ground floor due to paucity of

funds. The matter was taken up with MHRD, Govt. of India which provided sufficient funds

for further construction of library building through its plan grant. The construction activity

was started in the year 2004 itself. Now the construction of new central library building has

been completed. It has e-library facilities also.

iv. Renovation of Girls Hostel:

The work of renovation of girls’ hostel was entrusted to CPWD which took up the work and

completed the renovation work in scheduled time. Girls are residing in the hostel located

inside the campus of the Institute.

v. Repairs and Renovation of other Boys Hostel; College Buildings and Quarters for

accommodation to Director, other functionaries, teachers and supporting staff:

A plan for their repair and renovation for mentioned building were prepared and funds were

provided by MHRD, GOI through plan and non-plan grant of NIT Patna. The work was

entrusted to CPWD which started the renovation and repair work in the session 2004-05

and is continued till date. This initiative gave an initial facelift to NIT Patna buildings.

vi. Construction of boundary wall:

Previously there was no boundary wall from river Ganges side for NIT Patna and in the

other side the condition of the boundary wall was very poor. The Institution security was

very much in danger due to lack of proper boundary wall. MHRD, GoI provided fund for

construction of boundary wall and the task was entrusted to CPWD which initiated this

construction in the session 2004-05. The construction of boundary wall has been

completed in this period.

vii. Introduction of EPABX to improve communication among various departments of

the Institute:

The plan for introduction of EPABX system was prepared and implemented by using funds

provided by MHRD through its plan grant. EPABX is functioning properly in the institute

viii. Security:

Due to lack of proper boundary wall and unprotected entry points security problems used

to occur very off and on during erstwhile BCE Period. The case of theft and dacoity were

recorded during those periods. In view of the above mentioned situations steps were taken

to introduce a better and effective security by outsourcing the activity. Security encircles

the campus, the hostels and the quarters of teachers and supporting staffs.

ix. Internet Connection:

The internet connectivity of 128 Kbps provided by ERNET was not sufficient for our growing

requirement. Hence, NIT Patna has taken the service of BSNL to provide us with 2 Mbps

(1:1) dedicated leased line connectivity.

x. Development of NIT Patna Campus:

NIT Patna has decided to undertake construction of Academic building, Boys hostel, girls hostel, Student Activities Centre in the existing campus. .NIT Patna administration has

FINANCIAL STATUS 8.1 Analysis of Plan and Non-Plan Grants

The estimate of requirements of grant under non- plan head was arrived at by considering pay and allowances for teaching and non- teaching staff, pension and retirement benefit,

electricity, water and telephone, Estate maintenance, departmental operating expenses,

minor equipment, Students amenities, hospital expenses, contingent expenses, other

operating expenses and other expenses, legal charges, meeting expenses, postal expenses,

printing and stationery. A sum of rupees 11.74 crores was sanctioned by MHRD to cover

these expenses.

Similarly the estimate of requirements of grant under the plan and Plan(OBC) head was

arrived at by considering the fund requirement for the purchase of fixed assets like

computer and accessories, electric equipment, furniture, Generator, library building,

purchase of photocopier machine, projection equipment, telecommunication equipment,

water cooler and purifier purchase, renovations of hostels, college building, quarters, construction of boundary wall, vertical expansion of some of the buildings e.t.c and for this

purpose 12.00 crores was sanctioned by MHRD in this financial year. However, estimate

was more than the available grant by MHRD the shortage was attempted to be covered by

internal resource to some extent or by trimming the original estimate and dropping some of

the work or by undertaking some of the work partly in this financial year.

8.2 Sources of Funds

Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India is source for providing funds to

this Institute
